    This video is very close to my heart. I had seasons tickets for the "dynasty years" when they went to the Memorial Cup final four straight years. My very first Bruins game was also Stanleys. Over the course of those years we saw some great hockey, a whole bunch of brawls and a million or so fights. Queens Park Arena was packed and the atmosphere was electric. Here's a little bit of the "action" at the rink. Around the :45 second mark the Billings goalie is trying to get Dave Orleski off of the Billings player, the action shifts for a few seconds to the fight in the corner and then around the 1:10 mark you'll see a pair of gloves a helmet and a face mask fly into the scene, when the camera cuts back Stanley is just attacking the goalie. When the linesmen got Smyl off of the goalie and into the penalty box, he spent the rest of the brawl observing from the box. I'm not sure if it's true or not but I heard that Ernie McLean had told Stanley to get the goalie but not to get suspended because it was his draft year. That was the wildest brawl we ever saw in that arena. th-cam.com/video/ymjsxlfPFog/w-d-xo.html

    Smyl also scored the only goal I've ever seen, when both teams cringed over where the shot hit the goalie. I know they were playing Calgary; Gradin made a perfect pass to Smyl, who wound up a hard slapper coming down the wing. It hit the Flame goalie right in the...groin, lifted him up and back into the net. Players on both teams reacted about the same. Smyl was actually the first player to see if the goalie was ok.
    Smyl has been my favorite player since his sophomore year in the NHL.

    Also being a Vancouver kid born in 1972 I conversely became an Islanders fan in 1982. Mainly due to hockey cards I thought the Islanders had the best jerseys and Bossy the best player. The kids in my neighbourhood weren't too happy when the Isles swept the Canucks in the 1982 finals. I was a quasi Canucks fan when they drafted Bure and was a fan until the Messier era and the whole giving him the #11 jersey fiasco while neither himself nor the team consulting the Maki family did it for me. From then on I was just a Bure fan. Once you lose emotional investment in following a franchise then you're done as a fan. Good for Canucks fans that have stuck through all the horrible seasons and devastating Stanley Cup loses. Hopefully they get lucky this year.

      My favorite player ever! Back in the day, the Canucks were too expensive, but the New West Bruins were a cheap alternative ticket. This was back in the Barry Beck, Ron Greschner years, and Smyl was a rookie on a very good, very rough team. Easy to cheer for because he was such a small player, and fit into their style perfectly. His nickname back then was Machine Gun Smyl...every time he scored, he'd race to centre ice, turn and speed in on goal with his stick reversed like a gun, and "shoot" the opposing goalie! Then there was a brawl...every time!! I loved the guy, and was thrilled when the Canucks drafted him.

  • @Seriously_Unserious
    @Seriously_Unserious 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Smyl was a great leader, with a horrible team around him. Yet he just kept on leading and doing his thing, no matter what, with 0 complaints. Then when he retired, Stan's "C" goes to Trevor Linden. If Stan Smyl was Captain Canuck, Trevor Linden was Captain Canuck II. He picked up right where the Steamer left off and played a very similar style of game, just with a lot more size and a bit more talent and a vastly superior team backing him up.

    Hello Shannon I recently stumbled upon your Channel a couple of months ago. I think you have really great content. I must say that your video saying hockey is canceled tonight was a little tone deaf. As an African American who supports your Channel and loves hockey I was a little disappointed that you not make one mention about what's going on with the NHL and the reasoning behind there not being any hockey played Thursday and Friday. I did notice that your comments were turned off on that video because you wanted to avoid people like myself calling you out. Not surprised. Stan Smyl played back when the Canucks where the doormat of the then Smythe Division, mostly alternating with Winnipeg, or LA on who would miss the Playoffs that year. Typical standings in the Smythe of the 80s would be Edmonton so far out in first they're in another league, Calgary in 2nd, often with enough points that were they in any other division, they would have been in 1st, 3rd alternating between LA and Winnipeg, 4th alternating between LA, Winnipeg and sometimes the Canucks, and last mostly Canucks, but occasionally Winnipeg or LA on the rare years the Canucks finished 4th.
      So not surprised anyone but a long time, hard core Canucks fan would have heard of The Steamer.
      But he was helping in getting the Hobbits to Mt Doom, so there is that going for him.

    I lost my V canucks jersey with #35 Broduer on it. I still think this was the best jersey in canucks history. I would love to see it brought back in blue/green or go back to the orange black n yellow. Im not a fan of the current golf club i mean hockey stick across chest. Nor spaghetti plate skate. The orca in the black yellow n orange would be awesome but wouldn't meet the citys wet n damp feel.

    I've just watched a bit of your vintage. Justifying why Petey maybe wasn't the right pick. No knock but it does show the "who the f... Knows" truth. If you are 18 and talented, I think it's character, not skill. Nucks have been spoiled by character last couple years. Go Nucks

    Whose idea was it that bright yellow and red/orange was appropriate for instilling fear? Poor choice, maybe black, dark blue, dark green or something would've been better.
