I still remember the videos YEARS back of Steve trying to teach Max MK9. Now years later Max has finally realized how crazy good this game was.

There's something so charming about the art direction in mk9. The super saturated color palettes really make the characters pop.
I feel like they damn near nailed the visual aesthetic for modern MK in this game. The more realistic art direction in the sequels just doesn't hit the same.
Beyond Deception and Armageddon, MK 9 was my first real attempt at learning a fighting game. It’ll probably always be among my favorites.

It felt almost like the SNES MK, especially watching it, they got much better at graphics and interaction but the gameplay got worse and the animations are still ass in later games.
Man, this game is as important for MK as Street Fighter 4 was for Street Fighter, it brought the series back from almost becoming irrelevant. And I think it was also the last one that actually felt like a traditional MK game, as in the artstyle, the character designs, the cheesiness and wackiness.
I often say SF4 and MK9 reignited the fighting game genre.
Every MK after this felt derivative of this game. It is a great game, the best of the new era but since then the games including injustice have all had this samey feel to them. It makes you question how mortal kombat is going to continue forward.

This game was so smooth it made me give the whole franchise a re-evaluation.
I heard Kenny say it on a YOVG stream over the weekend that MK9 feels like a true celebration of everything MK and it really does ring true to me. MKX is probably the best game overall but I personally feel like it loses that old school mixed with new school feel that MK9 did so well. I do think X and 11 are gorgeous games but I would love for 12 to be a bit more like 9 and hearken back to that old school MK that made the series famous.
if MK12 was MK11 graphics (or better) with MKX's living towers but with MK9's feel and fluidity and had a fat roster of classics with some 3d era characters sprinkled in? It would be perfect.
@@NoiseFetish I think MK12 also should expand on a new roster. While All the classics should be there, I think MK12 being essentially a reboot narratively, it should try to make actual good new additions. Again, I want every classic character back, but I also think there should be an expanded roster of new we characters that can do something new.
IMO, it'd be a waste for MK12 being a universe reset with Liu Kang as Earth realm's God only for it to be nearly identical in characters.
The issue with recent MK games is that it really does give the new characters the short end of the stick in terms of writing
@@NoiseFetish Definitely agree about some more characters from the 3D era. Always kind of afraid that characters from that era will just fade out of MK because they're not the most "popular" games but there were some fun characters in there for sure.

This really is the last MK game where you can actually notice the music, its not great by any means but its more prominent in the mix unlike MKX and 11 where it feels like a complete afterthought ushered into the background.
Yup. The track at the stage with the magma and the MK logo is pretty iconic. Mortal Kombat's soundtrack has been pretty much dead since then.
Yeah I only noticed the MK movie music on the one stage in 11. Armory from 9 is still GOATed
It's funny that the 2 stages in mk11 where music is noticeable is the arcade one with the mk theme
And the throwback one with mk1 2 and 3 music
The Subway and Armory are amazing tracks.
MK9 Tag was some of the most fun I've ever had with a fighting game
MK9 will always hold a place in my heart for teaching me how to combo and confirm stuff. Plus Smoke was just too wonderful XD
Seeing people appreciate older MK games puts a smile on my face
We just need remasters of this, Trilogy and Deception(Unchained) and all of the MK fans will be happy.
Sad part is outside of Max and maybe ketchup and mustard. No one talks about the 2Ds anymore. You have to actually go dig for them :(

MK9 was dope! Had everyone u wanted to play. The speed, the way it felt, all those special moves just made it badass.
I love the color palette of this game, it's vivid and stylized but all the character action is clear
I remember playing Mk9 all day with friends after school, this game started it all dude.
This game is legit amazing. Glad you're giving it another shot. Fast pace, crazy and FUN characters, great spacing and footsies games.
This will forever be my favorite MK. Reptile in this game was so much fun and the presentation was put together perfectly. I learned over half the cast and couldn't put this game down.
I always loved the intro banter in MK. The fighter always come in from nothingness or from off screen, which means that the first fighter talks by themselves.
My friend and I thought it was the funniest thing to always skip the Kratos intro at the same spot because the dialogue was "YOU WILL NOT SEE THE END OF THI-"

MKX and MK11 were good but man MK9 just felt so nice to play with a great roster as well

This is how you do a reboot of a beloved franchise game MK IX (9) is still one of the best in the new line triology. I mean who doesn't love the Noob Saibot, Kung Lao fatalities? Even the ladies of MK9 look even good if you catch me drift.
Just seeing Max try to master Smoke is even a rare treat showing his commitment to Mortal Kombat 9 is a testament. Fight on dood and FINISH HIM!!!.
What I miss most about MK9 was the tag battles. I wish they brought that back.
The tag mechanic in this game was nuts. Kenshin and ermac was insane

I remember convincing some friends to buy this game with me back in like 2013 when KE came out on PC. The nostalgia with this one is real, even if I was bad then and still bad now.
I love the speed and the verticality. Also it just looks less “dark, realistic, kinda bland” as the later MK’s, brighter colors and cartoony designs FTW.
Man, I miss this game so much. I still remember the first time I got jump scared in the Krypt 😂

I miss this game. I played it once on my friends ps3 and I havent enjoyed a mortal kombat game as much since.
It's one of the best ones, always rated high and many people's favorite.

MK9 has a special place in my heart, I got it one year after my graduation from college and I used to rewatch its trailers and gameplay during the finals.
I hope they bring back the injury system from 9 to 12, as a lot of characters in 11 are using weapons.

I was referring to how the characters having cuts and wounds appearing on them the more they get hit.
Mk 9 was the best such fun combos and learning new characters was so satisfying
Man I forgot how much fun I had with MK9 when I was in 8th grade. Not sure if its the first but definitely one of the bigger fighting games I've put hundreds of hours in. That final boss with Shao Khan is still one of the hardest things I've done in a fighter and made it out alive

i’m gonna bring something up real quick: smoke is in mk1 and it definitely looks like mk11 in terms of graphics but it really *feels* like mk9/10
To me it’s crazy how well the visuals of MK9 hold up. Still an amazing looking game!
One of my favorite parts of this and MK11 are the stages. Places like the clocktower, the coliseum and the netherrealm were so cool. Wish MKX had better stages

I enjoyed mk9 a lot, just because of how young I was and how realistic for the time it was. I look back at it fondly now
I miss the online of this game so much man, I will be forever main Cyrex and Ermac, so many cool setups and combos, plus how this game is insane fast.
Shame on NRS/WB games for not only shutting the servers down, but doing it quietly that most didn't even notice until it was too late.

this game is so much better to spectate than the others
the presentation is beautifully clear and theres no clutter on stage or backgrounds up close to the characters
so the characters are the main showcase and they move fluently like martial artists should
kicks and punches are light and quick like a bruce lee movie and not big slow heavy hitting blows with stiff animation like MK12
The kombos were godlike in this game. I still play it from time to time.. ..
Game was so fun and easy you could main any character in the game. Personally Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Raider were my go toos, but would jump around to every character and learned most of them to keep the game fun.
I miss MK9's Tag mode so much 😊
Mk9 I believe was the turning point in combos...best one yet. I haven't tried 10 or 11 yet..

When it comes to NRS games I'll probably continue to stay a button mashing casual but MK9 was my first real dabble into Fighting Games and what a great experience it was. also good timing with these videos since MK11 Ultimate had a stupid good discount so I've been enjoying that the last few days
I pray that MK12 is as cool and great as MK9. The atmosphere, music, characters, story. Just in general MK9 was honestly the GOAT MK game.
You are correct haha! None of the subsequent modern MK games nailed the fun as much as this one. As of about 2 years ago when we brought it back, I still play it regularly with friends even after all this time.
MK9 and MKX make me realize how much I disliked 11. I hope 12 brings a little bit of 9/X back.

To this day I will never understand how we went from Mortal Kombat nine having a pretty good soundtrack with some actual edge, to Mortal Kombat 11 having a soundtrack so unmemorable that you could actually turn it all the way down and not miss a thing.
I remember watching my cousins play this for the first time when it came out and thinking the graphics looked so real 😂

Man, I've never spent as many hours with a fighting game as I spent on MK9 back in the XBox 360 days, absolutely lovely. I though MK11 would be the same, but, somehow, it feels different

I used to do some RIDICULOUS combos with Smoke in MK9! I'll never forget playing online with the same rando for like 15 games in a row at 3AM. Smoke V Reptile every time. We were so evenly matched. We traded friendly messages on Xbox Live after we finally decided to stop playing 😅

Definitely more faster than i remember. They should bring this kind of speed back. Maybe they already did. There's no denying that NRS learned a lot from MK11, we'll just have to wait to see what kind of things they learned and how it takes the formula further for MK12.

Sub zero can reset a combo strain if u properly freeze the ground before the oponent wake up (which means always works against the cpu xD)
MK 9 is the best one in my opinion. And the tag mode added another dimension to the game. And the tag seemed like it was just a concept of what they did with Noob Smoke on Deception. Also another great game
MK9 is still my favorite MK game to play and I would love a remaster of it with rollback netcode.
MK9 was NRG's attempt to bring back the first 3 MK games (before they tried 3D with MK4 in '97). This is why you don't see any fighter in it after 3.
I want ANY fighting game to have mk9's 2v2s. Live meter burn switching into a friend who is ready with their finisher combo. Good times

Easily my favourite MK, and in hot competition for my favourite fighting game every made. The gameplay can be kinda jank, but I was never good enough to be frustrated at things like Player 1 advantage. It's a beautiful game with the perfect roster, stages, music, and modes. Everything about MK9 is what Mortal Kombat is supposed to be.

Unfortunately, it's what you expect. This came out in 2011. Most people play online with recent MK games. It's a shame because it was great.
That's only because MK9 PS3 servers got shut down 3 years ago just as corona hit, otherwise I'd still be playing it just like I did religiously back in the day, speaking of which how is Max still playing it?
