"Hey, has anyone spun the camera around the character 4 times and did a shot from behind their _left_ ear?" "Yeah, I think Paul covered that." "Damn. Lemme think of another setup, ig..."
Well maybe they shouldn't have made all the ultimates Kamehamehas then. It seem more likethey'd be relieved not to do all the extra work of making new animation every single time.
@@marche800yeah, but at the same time a lot of these characters are *expected* to do a really big finisher Kamehameha so it's kinda tough to meet said expectations
I am really digging how the video creator chose the opponent most canonical to the super for each character where possible. That is an amazing touch and driving home the reference.
They did well for the most part. Some were off though. Like Super Saiyan 1 Vegeta’s Big Bang Attack should have been used on Android 19 and not Perfect form Cell.
@@splintercell320 I think that stuff always happened with characters that can transform. Like I am pretty sure that Vegeta (Z-early) can go super saiyan and then also turn into "super vegeta". Super Vegeta fits most against Perfect Cell, so perfect Cell was chosen as the opponent for all forms of Vegeta (Z-early), so that whoever record this can get all forms of that Vegeta in one fight.
@@paperluigi6132I meant Ocarina of Time isn't anywhere remotely close to the first Zelda game, so no? While the stories have changed, most Zelda games keep Link's appearance and personality fairly consistent and OoT Link is just another shade of the previous Links.

That's due to how CERO (the Japanese video game rating board) handles depictions of lost limbs. Even if the loss of the limb is never actually shown or bloody, it can still be enough to up a games rating. So normally they just don't bother trying to fight it so you get gimp arm Future Gohan instead.
Max's random ass ratings never fail to make me laugh: "That one was decent, I liked that. I'd give it an 8" "wooow that one was PRETTY cool - 7." Never change Maxy.
The thing that makes these so good is in the midst of battle. The fights in this game really feel like a struggle, and when someone is charging at you from far away, and you hit a teleport behind them only to hit a huge Kamehameha right after, or you use an attack like "No hard Feelings" Hit and you go through an energy blast to punch them in the face. That stuff is what really pumps these up. The situational is really key here. I think seeing the attacks in a vacuum, doesn't do them justice.
Yeah man hitting a vanish and landing an angry kamehameha never felt better. Especially with the sound design on good headphones I really like teh sound of charging the beams and the voices in japanese (I think they have more reverb and are a little more dramatic, hearing the kaiookeeen never gets old) .
That’s the point of sparking/budokai tenkaichi games. They include almost every character possible. BT3 had so many characters from dragon ball and spin off shows and it got me into so many things due to it. So yes not everyone wants to play dodoria but him being there is part of the sparking/BT tradition.
The fact this is only covering the ultimate attacks and not the normal super attacks which some are animated even BETTER than the ultimates speaks to the volume of how well made with care this game is
Another thing to note. In one fight you can expect to see maybe 2 to 4 supers, so the fact that some of these are really short and to the point is a blessing in disguise
@@NorwegianNoLife in DP battles yeah but even health pool wise it's difficult to get hit by more than 3 ults. Maybe I play wrong but with 3 characters I barely see more than 2 ults a game
I feel I need to join the amount of people asking for the Naruto Storm rate the super, it addresses a lot of Max's issues: similar looking beam and ball attacks and the lack of impact and destruction of the attacks. Those team supers in particular are a work of art and many of the supers are attacks that aren't even fleshed out in the anime
YES! I remember having my jaw dropped that they didn't just copy not just supers but story beat moments. They would go above and beyond with the medium they had.
Honestly I think the thing killing the impact is the lack of a big K. O. Screen and freeze frame, so it always just has the energy dissipate and the body fall to the ground like a ragdoll.
Nah, you can have really good impact on moves without a K.O. Screen. Relying on that is a problem that SF5 had and SF6 has mostly fixed so I feel like you can look there for examples of that actually.
Is mostly cause of the flow of the game, most of those moves immediately snap again into battle unlike Figthing game supers that have Hard knock downs, there's also the fact that some moves have the planet explosion property so they get the impact from there
If they did a KO screen at the end if you defeat the last fighter or the fighter, it would sell it as a ending blow for sure, don't know why they didn't?
People who don’t understand why Max isn’t interested in playing this need to remember that he’s not a super big Dragon Ball fan. He’s a fighting game fan, and DBFZ was a hype fighting game. It helps that DB has scream lords and some designs he likes, but that doesn’t mean he’s gonna be interested in Kakarot or Sparking Zero. And that’s cool; he doesn’t have to be a Dragon Ball fan to enjoy a few of the fighting games. And if you wonder ”why bother making this video then?”, go check out the numbers on his Jump Force Rate the Supers video did, and there’s your answer lol
@@dark_nightwing_xl2797 Dragon ball is 1 of the biggest IP's in the world. Goku is as recognizable as Mario or Link. Street Fighter is not even in the same dimension.
Terrible animation. No quality control whatsoever, lmao. The clipping is nuts, but it's apparent in almost every character. They really did the cheap "skin" method when making these characters.
@@tkm1875 yes that’s the point. That’s how Frieza Soldier was in Budokai Tenkaichi, it’s not supposed to be a spectacular ultimate and it’s just a goofy one.
It boggles my mind that Max doesn't know more about DBZ. How do you exist in the 90's as a kid who loves Japanese fighting games and not have that DBZ crossover fandom? wild.
36:20 The grey/Evil Buu appears for literally one chapter. Before absorbing Good Buu and becoming the Super Buu that's the main villain for most of the Buu Saga.
1:07:49 Borflek is a character who hails from a land known for its lush wilderness and its connection to primal magic. The rugged and mysterious forests of the Mireskeld region are not only Borflek's birthplace but also the source of his power. Borflek is a creature of endurance and strength, with a physical form that combines beastly features with humanoid traits. His skin is thick and bark-like, covered with patches of moss and lichen that change color with his moods and the environment around him. The Corn of Destiny is a peculiar artifact that Borflek wields-a symbol of both mockery and reverence among his kin. It appears as an ordinary ear of corn at first glance, but its golden kernels glimmer with an ethereal glow, and anyone who gets close feels a faint hum of ancient magic emanating from it. This is no mere vegetable; it's a relic imbued with rare and potent powers that can alter fate itself-though its effects are unpredictable.
I find it hilarious that Max's only context for everything past DBZ is just DBFZ, so hes just so confused by the characters 😭😭😭 his reaction to Caba killed me 😂
I think the lack that we are feeling in the impact is sound. There is no reaction from the terrain or sonic booms for some of the impacts. I really noticed that in the vegeta section. We have great beam sounds, good voice acting, but the sound design on explosions seems lackluster.
1:02:12 - Sorry for all the extra comments, I like to split things up for organizational purposes. Basically, that's how Universe 6 Saiyans look. Instead of muscular and ripped like U7 Saiyans, U6 Saiyans are generally lithe and slender.
Yea I have the game. Love it. Many supers look amazing especially the non ultimate but they missed on a lot of big ones. Especially fusion supers. They felt super lack luster
@@eliajshdjddj FighterZ has 30 characters, this game has 183 with another 20+ coming just this season. For the ultimates to look just as good (and way better in most scenarios) is worthy of praise. Also, FighterZ is a TERRIBLE Dragon Ball game.
@@TheReelReesePod I would prefer quality over quantity lmao and 99 percent of the supers these games share are done FAR better in fighterz Fighterz is objectively a better game then this xxxyyy masher lmfao
i love how max isnt really a big dragon ball fan but still covers some of the dragon ball games like fighterz and stuff like that and now he is doing sparking zero thats awsome
I think it's that they lack multi-hit combos at the end like traditional fighters. It's hype when you hear 500 punch sounds in 0.5 seconds from a Kamehameha.
Something small about the Super Saiyan Blue Spirit Bomb that I really like: the very first face shot where you can see that he's floating upwards. A small thing but I really enjoy it
I like the shading, colors, and angles, but they all lack the impact and style of "camera zooms to space and you see huge explosion: Dramatic Finish!" Somehow fusing the two styles likely lead to incredible results
That will be the sequel's main gimmick, they are going to improve the fight mechanics just a little, but the finishers will look more flamboyant as you described. Namco pumped so many of these games in the PS2 era
@@Jp63a Budokai Tenkaichi only became a decent fighting game (besides all the fanservice stuff) in the third game. Same goes for Budokai (the 2D game). I will not be surprised if Namco is pulling their punches on purpose, they are going to milk Budokai yet again in the PS5 generation
@@RRRRRRRRR33 Reminds me of how ATLUS insists in rerelasing games with updates instead of just moving on and making DLC like the rest of the gaming industry
So the sparkle pocket sand isn't meant to have impact and is actually rather faithful to the source material. The whole point of hitting Janemba with it was to neutralize the negative emotions it had by infusing it with good ki. That attack is like infamously known as an iconic gentle moment in a series where everything ends on big bombardment attacks.
Yep, beam leaving the atmosphere, gigantic explosion that changes the map, etc.. these are iconic visuals for Dragon Ball games. I guess the sequel will improve this stuff, shocking how popular this game ended up to be, surpassed Street Fighter 6 by a country mile (talking about the total number of players on Steam). 5:42 (asking about 5:18) That was Hildegarn, the villain from DBZ Movie 13 Dragon Fist Explosion (If Goku doesn't do it, who will?) They are referencing the final fight scene of the movie. But in the original animation it so much better. The dragon punches a hole through him, wraps around his body, then explodes and burns him to nothing.

Wasn't even sure if Max was gonna do this with it being an arena fighter & just how many characters there are lol Also, I'm sorry, but Angry Kamehameha is not at all a 6/10 with how guttural that "YOU FOOOOOL!" is lol
Something this game suffers from is lack of impact. The ultimates rely too much on camera angles and being flashy that the moment the actual attack lands, it feels so anticlimactic
@@n0nsticknick A couple of the supers are also just missing sound effects. It's especially noticeable with the spirit bombs, a bunch don't have any sound effect when they explode at the end.
They aren’t though, there are a few that are similar of course, but there are no two that are exactly the same, even the 16 different kamehameha ultimates, they are all very similar but no two are exact. My point is this, even if there are a handful of similar ones, there is still a unique ultimate for each version of each character. I’ve been playing for 3 days now and didn’t really put that together until I watched this video from max
@@danquaza9275 kid trunks (super saiyan) and base gotenks. Also Giant Slug, Anilaza and Hirudegarn. The other super have melee attacks more that looks better than the ultimate some times. A lot of Characters don't have an ultimate attack in the show, so they just gave them self distracte attack .
Some of these ultimates have a special ending if it kills the opponent. Like the SSJ3 Dragon Fist. I think that's the "impact" you said you were missing.
Not gonna lie, it's kinda hard not to compare some of these supers to previous iterations, especially those from around budokai 3. The cinematics and impact those specials had were damn phenomenal.
The Dragon Fist in Budokai 3 had way more impact. The roar trailing off, the screen shaking as it hits you and the big thud sound sell it way more than in Sparking Zero
One of Toriyama's greatest strengths as an artist was introducing new attacks, visuals and concepts that weren't really all that different from ones he'd already done, but always felt fresh, unique and exciting.
SSJ Blue Goku's ultimate animation is just so great, one of my fav of the game. From the powerup to the last close up frame to his face that shows how much "he means business" with that expression
Some of the regular abilities are 10x cooler than the ultimates themselves. Be a much longer video, but Anilaza's RT+X ability goes hard and isn't an ultimate. Punches the enemy around with teleporting fists, it's wild to see in a fight.
I think my major criticism is the sound design. The overall quality of the sounds is nice, but the blasts/impacts don't have that *BOOM*. Like, some of the attacks are basically nukes but don't have that bass or roughness to them.
Yea that’s my only complaint with this game. The moves in it of themselves are great with some having amazing visuals but the sound effects are so low that it takes away the impact of the explosions
Honestly only complaint with the game. Blows don’t have a lot of weight to them. I think a little camera shake or differing sound effects would make them feel more powerful
My one big gripe with the beams is that they’re way too small/thin. Especially those that are ultimates like Gohan’s father/son kamehameha. That thing should cover the screen.
@@TheReelReesePodno they didn’t. Weaker characters had smaller beams while stronger characters had larger ones. Now they all look the same. You have it totally backwards.
@yan_dj actually Cell did Sell it... In the literal wrestling sense of the word. He acted like it did damage. Then he revealed he was trolling and regenerated.
Screen shake does wonders for DBFZ Super Saiyan Vegeta's Final Flash, I think that might help. Screen shake feels like something that suits Vegeta, too, at least to me, it's intense, unstable and angry.
@@zer0stars So he believed. I'm reasonably sure Cell didn't realize how insane his regen was, and so overestimated how badly that would have gone. (Keep in mind, he freaked out over the warp Kamehameha, which only erased him above the waist, and that was AFTER taking a glancing Final Flash.) He didn't expect to survive self destructing, but that at least is reasonable to expect for any sane level of regeneration. (So, not Cell or a Majin.)
The thing about the Tenkaichi series was that the size of the roster was always its chief selling point, alongside how broken some of the characters were. There was an abundance of Kamehamehas but to be fair, an awful lot of the characters throughout the whole show use it as well. Funny enough, all of the DB Super characters arguably had the best and most creative Supers
Yeh since super had weirder characters they were more creative on the supers, but it could be even better for example cabba doesn't have his kick attacks and frost doesn't use poison or his ninja bomb.
@@PhantomMiria22 thanks it's weird a lot of supers look way better than the ultimates, and there is still a lot of other attacks missing, like where is Goku one inch punch or his blue kaioken combo.
This was a fun watch as someone who grew up with bt3 and raging blast 2. I would love to see the rate the supers on previous dbz games if you got the stamina.
bro with dlc season 1 being done in connections it's the perfect time i just hope he lands a good vid that shows all ultimate jutsus including character specific variations and team ultimate jutsus
The biggest problem with these supers is there is no planet destruction and also there's not big impactful sound or sound of the rock debris falling etc. It falls flat without extra sound. Also they try to rush them to be fast for faster gameplay flow.
They definitely prioritized gameplay rather than spectacle it feels like I never have enough time to fully enjoy the supers before it ends abruptly, cutting back to gameplay.
I think some of the Supers are better than in DBFZ but the lack of impact, bad voice acting and sound effects low volume make them feel like nothing. Older DBZ games had more impact which is so odd. This game just missing a certain sauce.
@@Omega-jg4oq he isn’t as much of a fan compared to other anime TH-camrs that focus on shonen anime games. Does he play a game like dragon ball fighterZ; yes. He probably is a fan of dragon ball; but not that much compared to other db fans. So it can feel like an outside prospective when he gives his opinions on sparking zero.

@@splintercell320 Yeah, it's not absolutely perfect but it was still really close considering, you know, the unreal number of characters haha

On one hand, yea it gets redundant but also... I mean it's a common move that many characters know and there's 182 of them so oh well 🤷🏽
The thing that makes these so good is in the midst of battle.
It really fits the pacing of the fights and helps that u have to work a little pull off a good blast

Honestly I think the thing killing the impact is the lack of a big K. O. Screen and freeze frame, so it always just has the energy dissipate and the body fall to the ground like a ragdoll.
It's also just the pacing of the animations. A lot of them are not snappy and have little payoff.
it has to do with the costant 60fps and the fact that none of this are actually animated in a smart way, they're all overly smooth
Cell's noises when he gets hit sound like he's taking a hot dish out of the oven

51:38 Though I'm glad the dead zone super isn't a projectile that he throws and explodes. Weirdest super but they made it better in this
Not gonna lie, it's kinda hard not to compare some of these supers to previous iterations, especially those from around budokai 3. The cinematics and impact those specials had were damn phenomenal.
Not many supers in anything are better than Gogeta 4s in Budokai 3 imo, it's so good
The Dragon Fist in Budokai 3 had way more impact. The roar trailing off, the screen shaking as it hits you and the big thud sound sell it way more than in Sparking Zero
Nah that’s just nostalgia
Real talk. I miss my Future Gohan backflips before the one-armed Kamehameha
@@SoufSideGuapo no i agree. Obviously the graphics are better now but some of the hits just seem to lack impact.
That Ginyuu force attack was so detailed because it had notorious IRL consequences.

SEIZURE PROCEDURE
Max calling Yamcha "Goku" is the level of disrespect on Yamcha then him dying from a Saibaman 😂
🤣
well, tfs dr zero got yamcha wrong as well lmao
@@ArchonKujo Yeah Yamcha's more of a Gohan
He did it on purpose.
it was retribution for calling Nail Piccolo.
One of Toriyama's greatest strengths as an artist was introducing new attacks, visuals and concepts that weren't really all that different from ones he'd already done, but always felt fresh, unique and exciting.
58:12 tbf Max, they arent absorbing it into themselves, theyre henchmen, theyre just stealing it for someone else who does the drinking after
Should've just rated the rush attacks. They're generally more interesting than the ultimates unless the ultimates are rush attacks
I do so love seeing Frieza talk mad shit as he gets turned to dust.
SSJ Blue Goku's ultimate animation is just so great, one of my fav of the game. From the powerup to the last close up frame to his face that shows how much "he means business" with that expression
The game in general is so beautiful and well made, it's very good visually, you can see the care put into it.
Did not think you would do this, but am happy you did.
They do if you have a subwoofer
Honestly only complaint with the game. Blows don’t have a lot of weight to them. I think a little camera shake or differing sound effects would make them feel more powerful
My one big gripe with the beams is that they’re way too small/thin. Especially those that are ultimates like Gohan’s father/son kamehameha. That thing should cover the screen.
That's such an unappealing look though, glad the beams are thinner.
@SpiralSkylines
Nope. It doesn’t sell them as powerful when they look thin. It’s what helps distinguish each characters relative strength.
@@azuresaiyan9005 It didn’t matter in BT3 because they all looked the same anyway.
Thank God they learned from their mistake and changed it.
@@TheReelReesePodno they didn’t. Weaker characters had smaller beams while stronger characters had larger ones. Now they all look the same. You have it totally backwards.
They're accurate to the manga.
Can we talk about how Frieza's voice actor went ALL IN for this game?
32:40 that one in specific is actually not that big in the cannon either, but it has so much energy accumulated it can nuke an entire planet
KNEW IT!!!
Damn editors got this up quick mad props to the team!
We need a video of just Max naming characters because some of these names he is throwing out there are killing me 😂😂
They have to sell the final flash better. That attack when he first used it was just so visually impressive. That’s what they gotta go for
Cell didn't even sell for it in the manga
@yan_dj actually Cell did Sell it... In the literal wrestling sense of the word. He acted like it did damage.
Then he revealed he was trolling and regenerated.
Screen shake does wonders for DBFZ Super Saiyan Vegeta's Final Flash, I think that might help. Screen shake feels like something that suits Vegeta, too, at least to me, it's intense, unstable and angry.
@@emperormegaman3856 To be fair, Cell actually had to dodge that attack. If he didn't dodge it, he would have died there.
@@genericogeronimo2163 Frost has his poison as a special, most characters have some of their more unique stuff as specials instead of supers.
This gives me hope that he'll do a naruto Storm someday
bro with dlc season 1 being done in connections it's the perfect time
i just hope he lands a good vid that shows all ultimate jutsus including character specific variations and team ultimate jutsus
@@imStorm3r fingers crossed🤞
He mentioned Storm after the rate, said it would be fun to finally do one for the Naruto games
@@davidasilvaoliveira7781 why would he do that?
@@shirosatsuma4946 because it would be cool for storm fans like me to see it
They need to make a sonic arena fighter. It's just the perfect platform for characters that run around so much
Didn't think I'd watch Nicolas cage watch sparking zero today
I was waiting for this one
Devs: How many Kamehamehas can you make?
Artist: Yes
Devs: You're hired
The biggest problem with these supers is there is no planet destruction
and also there's not big impactful sound or sound of the rock debris falling etc.
It falls flat without extra sound. Also they try to rush them to be fast for faster gameplay flow.
They definitely prioritized gameplay rather than spectacle it feels like I never have enough time to fully enjoy the supers before it ends abruptly, cutting back to gameplay.
yeah its lacking the environment destruction the older games had. Or the shots of the beams shooting out into space.
And its not like you need stage destruction to begin with. Just give us the big profile shot with the beam flying off or through the stratosphere.
I absolutely love when piccolo says "I HOPE YOUR AT PEACE!" As he charges up his ultimate attack at his friend's for a friendly sparring match 😂😂
Well that's dickhead Piccolo from Saiyan Saga, he wanted to kill Goku and everyone related to him anyways (Except Gohan)
lowkey you should have credited and linked the channel you used the vid from
I think some of the Supers are better than in DBFZ but the lack of impact, bad voice acting and sound effects low volume make them feel like nothing. Older DBZ games had more impact which is so odd. This game just missing a certain sauce.
22:27 " That was not Piccolo"
MAX: ooh did i did a racism
14:45 Did Vegeta just steal Hellzone Grenade?
I think it was based on his fight with buuhan he does sorta of a hellzone grenade
Piccolo: ...the fuck?
That's Piccolo's technique! (TM)
Hell yeah! Here we go!!
It’s feels nice having a non dragon ball fan react to the supers. Gives a outside prospective
He is a fan, but not a big DB fan.. Like come on.. This is not the first DB game he plays
@Omega-jg4oq exactly, he's played all one of them...lol
@@Omega-jg4oqif fighterz wasnt 2d style he wouldnt have touched it. He s not a db fan and its okay
@@Omega-jg4oq he isn’t as much of a fan compared to other anime TH-camrs that focus on shonen anime games. Does he play a game like dragon ball fighterZ; yes. It’s a beautiful fighting game and Max is mostly a fighting game channel (who also has time playing other types of games). I probably didn’t say it well enough. He probably is a fan of dragon ball; but not that much compared to other db fans. So it can feel like an outside prospective when he gives his opinions on sparking zero.
