I got a chance to ride one when they were still in production. It was smooth and fast. The overall fit and finish is very high quality. Super nice and fun to ride. My buddy Jeff Stoess won the Sparta GNCC pro quad class on one of the Cannondale quads on a rainy muddy day way back when.

I remember racing on of these back in 2002-2003
I holeshot ever time I rode one. Biggest thing was reliability.
Working on them wasn’t bad at the time. Shop I worked for had race team for them.
I remember when we went to plant in pa came back with trailer loads of these bikes and quads.
Wish I still have one of the quads they where race ready out of the box

It's crazy to think how innovative theyvwere with this bike. Itbhas features that we finally got not too long ago. It still has some trick features that we dont have like the in frame transmission swap.

      EFI
      Electric start
      Cassette transmission
      Reverse head
...all state of the art & not seen again (or ever) for years in MX.

I remember looking at these along with the cannibal, blaze, and moto race quads back in 2001. There was a polaris/Kawasaki shop in my town that started selling Cannondales and every time I went there i left drool marks beside the blaze 440 xc quads (I was getting into atvs heavily at that time). If i remember right, the bikes were like $8,000 and the quads were close to $10,000, which was crazy for 2001, but they were american made and pretty much race ready off the showroom floor.

Thanks to your channel I decided to purchase a new or used bike. Either a 2005 SV1000 or a 2023 V Strom 650. I’ll know in a couple of days. There was a 2023 RM250z for $5,900. I really wanted that too. Thanks for what you do! Oh, and to honor your channel I got a red white and blue helmet. Was feeling patriotic after watching one of your Honda CR500 find videos. God bless America!

Remember going to look at one at some obscure dealership as a kid. People were scoffing at fuel injection and the other features. Saw a few new ones for sale a few years back. Shame we don’t get to see exciting or exotic things much anymore or at least the feeling is gone. This was like a space ship back then.

The cassette transmission is pretty legendary for a bike from its time! Definitely a company that was far ahead of the times…sadly without the monster funding like the big companies which lead to their demise. They were certainly passionate about making something different though!

@@Frank_999Scoobydooby They still make pretty good bikes, but now they're just generic Taiwanese-made stuff. They're not quite on the level of craftsmanship as they were when they were handmade in the US.

@@cra_55 I toured the shop (both bicycle and motorcycle, for an employment interview), and nothing was hand made, and almost nothing is anymore.
It makes me sad if the bicycle manufacturing is not in Bedford anymore. I have seen way too much of our manufacturing redistribution to nations who's citizens can not compete in free enterprise, (communistic, as the USA is now).

Did it not have ait intake issues that would clog up in muddy/dirty conditions? I heard the intake was fluted through the frame at the stem but maybe that was more to do with frame oil of which I didn't know. Maybe both? I recall it didn't fair well at all in the initial AMA races and the idea was scrapped. Ok, I don't know that much about the reasons why, but sure is moto history right there.

You should interview Joe Montgomery, and by phone would be fine. Nobody ever interviewed the CEO Joe Montgomery, (still CEO of the bicycle division I believe), to get his side of the story of why Cannondale went under. They had their teething problems I know, (The manufacturing floor manager was one of them, not very bright. I interviewed there, turned down the job), but the industry did not want the new competition, and they did band together to help destroy them. Yes, I am talking about the MXA write up on the bike. I have seen those "hit pieces" orchestrated before in other industries with new competition, or else we would be riding American made Tucker dirt bikes today.
Shame on MXA for helping destroy the greatest American effort to make a dirt bike. That was evil.

That's a take on it I didn't think about for sure. I mean when KTM and HUsky and Gasgas and now Beta and Triump want to jump in the mix it seems the media are all over the idea yet I do think that Suzuki has been getting a real bad rep via the mags in recent years. I dunno, just a hack and a fan I am.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA ปีที่แล้ว

I interviewed there about 6 months before MXA did a hit piece on it. One root of reliability problems was also the shop floor supervisor.
I could tell he was a flunky from the automotive industry. I watched him make a decision to use 800 head studs that were made from the wrong material and had stress risers. So if anybody broke head bolts that were only made of cold rolled, at the last thread, I was there when that decision was made.
