I wouldn't say, like it seems so many have, that this song is "depressing". I think the music is very beautiful and as far as the text is concerned, I have heard only what Sinead sings here so I'm not able to comment correctly about it yet, but I suspect that the text reflects what pains the writer is experiencing as precisely and poetically as he can describe anything else in utter heartbreak, I.e., with aching soul and the mortal heart of his love which beats to its end, stabbed and dying. This is the first performance of the song I've heard and I know already that it is one of the best. The comments attest to this but even if there were none, it is still possible for one to feel the heartbreak. Sinead delivers the pathos, utter sadness and despair by almost whispering it to us implying this feeling as so deep and so very personal, an epiphany to the writer of how sad he could ever find himself, laying bare his heart and the depth he had loved and the profundity of how invested he allowed himself, telling us in the intimacy of a secret whispered to a trusted friend and revealing to himself too, much more than he cares to admit. These are the harsh lessons of love and the broken heart 💔
