I don’t like my cycle, I think it’s a punishment, and unfair men don’t get one. I don’t think it’s unhygienic or embarrassing but it makes me feel gross, (especially when I can feel it when I laugh/sneeze)

The way you think about anything shapes the outcome. It’s not a punishment 🙏

I’m really glad you all are having this conversation. Im currently sharing my journey of healing my heavy and painful cycles through nutrition and self care and learned how much shame I had around my cycle. We need to have this conversation more often.

I wish you’d also touched on how period products have been moralized as well. Tampons, pads, cups, discs… each seems like a moral choice with judgement based most heavily on pads.

I agree. Aside from the tampon vs pad wars, one aspect I don't see people talk about is how in some "eco-conscious" circles there is shaming about using disposable products.
Specifically when menstrual cups became more popular, people were acting like it isn't okay for someone to not be willing or able to insert and remove something from themself and that really put me off.

Working in dermatology has definitely taught me a lot about hygiene. Hygiene is something people on social media have gone overboard about but, you really need a few good products that work for your needs

Omg, it’s so insane to me how people have and are using products in the name of smelling good. I’m promise you y’all need like 1-2 things and your good.

@@MIforever22 no seriously. I just use three products on my face. A good body wash and a good lotion. Everything else is just so you can spend extra money for no added benefits

@@queenawill3542 and sometimes those extras can even do more damage than a simpler routine would do.

I definitely also believe that it is important to have more conversations about people's wellness and especially reproductive rights. When it comes to menstruation, we all experience it differently and it matters for us to be able to discuss it, to know how we can help each other, especially as women. We should normalise having such discussions openly.

This is such a good episode! one thought that I had while listening to this is how have internalized the belief that the distress that I have on my period is just caused by my period, and therefore not valid. Also, I have had many experiences of being horrified by my period because of the portrayal of how its "supposed" to look like on these ads.

Wonderful information! Thank you for sharing this purposeful content. I often wished that I was better able to explain what we as women go through just to maintain healthy bodily function to my spouse (and sometimes his friends *insert sharp side eye).
    Good work-great guest speaker!

one thing that really bothers me is the way people talk about PMS. I thought it was a joke and not a real thing bc on tv and in casual conversation is always an insult about women being bitchy and hungry.
Meanwhile I'm so happy when I finally get my period, because it comes after days of painful symptoms that don't go away until the bleeding starts. it took me so long to realize that was an issue.
even irritability and sensitivity people really joke about and belittle, but it doesn't feel good to be the experiencing those things from the inside either.
