I have a 2016 FRS and the stock stereo crapped out and I have to replace it. I was holding off because of the install. I was intimidated to do it myself because of the wiring - I wasn't sure how to cut and connect it with other wires. This is a great video showing each step and how to do it. It actually looks pretty easy now and I think I'll be trying the install myself. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
A very informative video, I just want to say thank you. I have a 2014 Scion FR-S in the United States. I brought myself the Pioneer DMH-2660NEX. I plan to install a camera, but will do so at a later date. For now, I have the basic accessories needed to set mine up.
Incredibly detailed and helpful! This is my first time dealing with my BRZ headunit stereo. All of the wiring is overwhelming and intimidating but this helps explain everything very well... Thanks!!
i know Im randomly asking but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost the account password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Curtis Robert i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Do you have any info on whether the Australian 2013 toyota 86 GTS has a factory amp? I just bought an 86 because I loved the look and wanted to treat myself for the first time in my life and I didn't listen to the stereo before I bought it. It's horrible. Now I have to figure out how to make it better and I can't find australian specific info and the forums are all so complicated. I don't know what to do but im trying desperately. I wish I'd never bought it. I've almost quit smoking and the way I stopped smoking in my car is to sing along to music.
Hey there, amazing video, very informative.. I have a few questions that may help some new viewers as well... I am trying to install a Pioneer AVIC system (mainly because my unit does not come with an in-dash GPS) I have a 2017 Subaru BRZ... this factory head unit comes with a few trinkets: 1) Built in microphone for phone calls, 2) Steering wheel controls for volume, phone calls, menu navigation. I know the wire harness i bought has wires for steering wheel controls but I want to make sure that's all I need to tap. Also this head unit has wires for speedometer and other things, just curious if you have had any experience with that. THANKS in advance!
Hi mate, we have another video on our channel for the 2017 BRZ as this is a very different setup. it requires retention of USB, reverse camera and SW controls. The factory microphone can never be retained as it will not work with the aftermarket head units, they all come with their own.
@CarbonCarSystems I Have a 2012 Toyota 86, looking to upgrade the Head Unit and Camera, little confused about the Camera, do I need to rewire the whole camera cable to the reverse camera as the factory camera is 6V and all standard after market reverse cameras seemed to be 12V?
i installed a similar unit in my corolla 2014 model. i couldnt locate where to connect the power antenna blue wire to the power cont. but the radio works anyways. does this mean i dont need to find a connection or what im confused! great install vid btw basically the same for the 2013 onwards corolla.
Some vehicles do not have power antennas, so they do not require the blue wire connection. Best way is to look at the antenna plug there should be a "coaxial" style cable for the antenna and if there is another thin wire in the antenna plug this would be the power booster wire, if not there not needed. Usually if your getting good reception anyway it means its not there an not required.
My 2017 Toyota 86 does not have that 5 pin connector for the reverse trigger in wire. Do you know where I have to connect that cable in the newer models?
Hey Daniel! Super cool video and a life saver. I'm actually installing a Pioneer SPH DA120 and doing well except for the mic installation. My BRZ already has two mics installed which I assume are there to connect to the optional head unit. Problem is, I'm unable to locate the mini jack to plug into the Pioneer. Any ideas?
If you have a factory mic it won't plug directly in, it will have to be cut and modified to suit the Pioneer, personally I would not recommend doing that though just leave your factory mic where it is and run the mic that comes with the Pioneer unit up behind the factory reverse mirror it will mount better and give clearer voice.
So I just installed an aftermarket like the video not a kenwood though, but my factory amp does not work anymore and I have no sound on my front door speakers.....any suggestions
I know this is super late, but I’d like the info to go out, the amp turn on is pin 8 of the 10 pin connector. You need to tap power to it. You can get it from pin 9 of the 28 pin connector.
Great video - interesting to watch. Would love to know if you've managed to retain the OEM microphone on the 2017 BRZs (it's embedded into the roof above the rear view mirror, near the lights). Thanks for your Facebook responses too :P
Great vid, but the information you gave about the iPod/iPhone plug is incorrect. An Android phone gets plugged into that USB slot as well. Androids will not be recognised on the plain usb port. It is not even properly mentioned in the manual. I messed around with mine for about half an hour before i worked out what was wrong.
We use the Metra part TOYUSB I think the number is, we have them in stock at all times if you need, we have online here: carboncarsystems.com.au/shop/wiring-solutions/metra-axtoyusb/ Free shipping
You can choose we generally put one in the glove box and adapt one to the factory USB on the GTS and BRZ models the lower models we come out near centre console.
Yes you can, when we do installations we wire it to the new head unit, you can do it two ways buy a adapter plug around $50 or just the cable and adapt it do the new head unit with a composite video plug. We didn't show this because the cameras every vehicle have is different some genuine factory, some dealer fitted aftermarket. It certainly can be done though.

Thank you so much you saved my account!
@Jensen Bodhi Glad I could help :)

I have a 2016 frs in the states and I do not have that connector for the reverse trigger.
Thank you, totally doing this

did you figure out where to connect the reverse wire? I'm doing an install of the ddx918ws in my 2017 brz
Very useful, thx!
Really helpful video. Enabled me to do a pro install with out chopping any wires 😂 big thanks from the 🇬🇧
Got a link to where you got all the harness for plug and play?

Thank bud, this was my gut feeling. Great advice and thanks again!
Is there an adapter to use the stock mic? I'd really like to retain it
no sorry no one makes one
is there a tutorial on what has to be modified?
Damn, Daniel! Very nice video. Holding out for my gas powered soldering iron to die so i can get me one of those awesome looking battery powered ones.
Yeah they are good about $200
Do wires have to be spliced each time? I am leasing my vehicle with intention to buy out but I don't want to risk anything by splicing wires
Our kits are plug and play we design special harness!
So I just installed an aftermarket like the video not a kenwood though, but my factory amp does not work anymore and I have no sound on my front door speakers.....any suggestions
@@mdroproductions have the same problem.... any solutions?

I like the video! Very nice friendly guy!
Thanks champ!

Ahh ok well great info thank you, we didn't get a chance to try the Android but other models have been like that. Great pick up.
What is the other usb plug used for?
Michelle Keselman the other usb is used for updates to the unit or usb media files.
@chiggahouse is correct :D or charging another device or phone.
Is that a 2016 subaru brz that you are installing it into? I've been trying to find a faceplate that will make sure my it looks flush when installed.
Where to buy those usb adapter?
Quick question I have. 2017 Toyota 86 with the standard head unit I have a Toyota micro sd map card would that give me navigation?
Whats the point of the little gps piece? I plugged it in and it still says there's no navigation input. In either case i use gps off my phone.
it improves the accuracy of the gps off phone when using CarPlay or android auto. its a stipulation by apple if you want to have CarPlay on a unit.
What's the name or part number of the USB adapter?
We use the Metra part TOYUSB I think the number is, we have them in stock at all times if you need, we have online here: carboncarsystems.com.au/shop/wiring-solutions/metra-axtoyusb/
Free shipping
Where does the Apple car play lead exit the dash?
You can choose we generally put one in the glove box and adapt one to the factory USB on the GTS and BRZ models the lower models we come out near centre console.
Wht the name of the thread tool ??
Can you use the factory rear camera for aftermarket headunits?
would like to know this too guys!
Be aware factory reverse cameras are 6v and you can tell because they have a square plug into rear of head unit.
I need that soundskins jacket lol
Its a once off at the moment but we should have something coming soon :D
if u could put me at the top of the list haha
Where can i find the factory amp?
Does this head unit works with OEM AUDIO + ?
I am unsure how the OEM Audio kit works sorry we have never done one.
Would this work on a 2012 scion tc are plugs the same as the frs?
Sorry I am unsure about the Scion models we don't get here in Australia
What year is that Scion FRS?
This is a 2012 model but it works on all models right through till 2017, 2017 had a slight facelift on the dash and an extra part is required.
