I'm just starting to learn calligraphy and bought a book last week. I learned more about the basics in this 6 minute video than the first 10 pages of the book. Now I see why all those lines are important. Excellent video. Now on to practicing.
LOVE this. Modern technology, while convenient, is ruining our entire sense of art, expression, and craftsmanship. How much better the world was when it traveled at a slower pace to enjoy things like calligraphy!
I've been making hand made ink pens that are turned on a lathe for years. Some out of wood but most out of acrylic. Today I bought my first calligraphy set to take my fountain pens to the next level in learning something new.
Hi Everyone! So sorry it has taken me so long to reply to this - been moving the studio and then unpacking and resetting up plus all the work that is on. Really does take it out of you. We are planning on doing more, and regular, vids - write in to let me know what you would like to see hope you are all well Paul
+tntboom21 I'm really not arguing with someone that can't tell it was supposed to be funny. Me and the other person here clearly do know what I was talking about.
very educational man...3 months ago I my first calligraphy mostly by instinct and common sense, so glad I came close...but you just thought me 6+ min lesson of a lifetime
Thank you. I took a Calligraphy class and all the teacher did was make everyone trace letters without explaining anything. I think I need to be self taught for the moment. P.S. Your voice is majestic!
Found this really useful! :D Been banging my head against my computer trying to find printable calligraphy paper, but this vid helped me realize that line size matters....and that it's WAY more fun making my own! :D Sidenote: Saw a couple of comments that said this was way too advanced for beginners, but I had no problem understanding it. I've had to rewind and pause in a few places, just to make sure I'm doing it right, but other than that, I don't see how this is too difficult for beginners; it's just learning how to draw lines on paper, basically. (Though I did spring for that special little ruler at Hobby Lobby; it helps! :D)
I have always loved writing and had the desire to learn calligraphy. I've attempted several times when I was younger through books, but never took a real class. It occurred to me the other day I should TH-cam it! So glad I did. This was very informative, especially in regards to the beginnings of letter proportion/formation! Thank you so much. Debbie
I like how the ruler marks are done I just do the lines another way and never worked out, I am going to try this way thanks..I can't take classes yet so I'm teaching myself thanks for sharing..
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I appreciate you sharing, esp. the grid line. I purchased a calligraphy pen set last month, I was lost with the instructions included.
Wonderful video!! I learned 1/2 a dozen things that I didn't have a clue that I didn't know them lol. And the smooth clear voice just adds to the experience. I'm from Essex but live in the States (I know I lost a bet with God lol) and I get teased more for my slang terms than my accent. I like to say "half the people love my accent and their boyfriends don't ". Lol
I remember Calligraphy and Lettering being part of our primary and secondary school curriculum. I was fascinated with the beauty of it but was too lazy to do it myself. It’s always a lot of work and I didn’t consider it relaxing then. Now I’m watching Calligraphy videos to alleviate stress. Ha.
omg! Thanks for this tutorial. I've been reading a book about this and I couldn't imagine what it says and this video let me visualize what the book says. Thank you!
Paul Antonio presentation is concise & to the point (sorry couldn't resist that), very practical & easy to understand. No silly, American hammy in a burger 🍔 what you need is quality information & music with no ego relish.
This was fantastic. Thank you. My handwriting is atrocious, I am left handed too. I'm starting to learn calligraphy in the hopes I can improve my handwriting.
I have been complimented on my hand writing for several decades but I have only taken one Art class that specifically addressed calligraphy. I found that taking the class taught me to properly write in everyday situations. (pressure, slant, lift, etc.) Could this be why you have such excellent hand writing "...for a guy..." (I'm a guy, too)
I'm going to Michael's today, to buy me some stuff! Lol the drawing of the lines is rather confusing to me, but I did smile when he actually started the letters 🥰
i must allude a question, does doth have the faclon winged top fountain pen. much like the pen excretes ink i excrete a fluid of similar taste when i use my.... falcon
If you study calligraphy seriously and practice effectively you can easily develop a fabulous italic style hand using a monoline pen. I began calligraphy at the Academy for Fine Arts in New Orleans many years ago and I constantly get comments on how amazing my regular handwriting is, usually followed by a "for a guy." I just think to myself, "Ptth, or for anyone for that matter." :-)
I've enjoyed every one of your calligraphy videos. I was wondering if possibly you could find a left-handed scribe to do a video or two on how they write. I recently started learning calligraphy and my biggest issue so far is finding any useful video material geared towards lefties. I've seen several videos of left-handed people doing calligraphy, but none that really explain their particular technique. I've read and seen in videos tips from righties that simply say "turn your paper" or "buy a left oblique nib" or "have a flexible wrist." That does help, but if there was someone who could really break down their left-handed technique, that would be awesome. Anyways, I look forward to more of your videos!
Tyler Martin Hello Tyler, great that you started. Left handed calligraphy depends on the pen hold that you have. It varies so much from one left hander to the next. Gaynor Goeff is left handed and she taught me. She is brilliant. Look her up. Keep well and keep practising.
you probably dont give a damn but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost the password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
@Emmitt Dariel i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I love your traditional method but Instead of having to draw those lines, can I use graphing paper? And just mark where the base line, ascender and etc... are?
_Calligraphy is definitely music for your eyes._
+EL MATADOR Agreed.
Fuck u
Sujal Pathak lol she didn't do anything to you to say that. u idiot
lauren mungaray Please don't start a flame war, just ignore.
EL MATADOR lol nice name (The killer) 👌😂

Nice of this guy to take a break from torturing James Bond to teach us calligraphy.
Rofl!
LOL!!!
PMSL 🤣🤣
Excellent
This is amazing. It doesn't look written at all, it's like it's printed.
Who else gets pissed when their hand wants to automatically write in cursive but you don't know all the letters yet
Meee
Kristin Mayorga I know cursive
Yes I'm bragging because it's the only thing I know
Kristin Mayorga I had to learn cursive in school so this was slightly easier for me.
Kristin Mayorga IKR XDD
You have to know the letterforms before you start writing them or it will only frustrate you
LOVE this. Modern technology, while convenient, is ruining our entire sense of art, expression, and craftsmanship. How much better the world was when it traveled at a slower pace to enjoy things like calligraphy!
I bet his voice wasn't that classy til after he learned Calligraphy
actually my voice was always like that - well after it broke
PaulAntonioScribe I don't believe it
Jackson Catlett I don’t really care what you believe.
Actually trinidad and Tobago accent always sounded a bit posh to me 😉
PaulAntonioScribe I believe everyone here is just joking, your accent sounds great :-)
This looks like art for people with OCD. Yet I think it's beautiful. I'll try
Aaron S what means ocd?
Marvin Wagner Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Doesn't quite fit the bill, but OK.
How'd it go btw?
***** Doing good! Funny to look back at this comment when i first started. I like doing hebrew and arabic calligraphy a lot frequent, both are great.
Where are you from? You sound Trinidadian.
I felt so happy just watching him draw the squares ...
L.lawliet same
Lolol I feel we're here for the same reason
How to write fancy Ls
I've been making hand made ink pens that are turned on a lathe for years. Some out of wood but most out of acrylic. Today I bought my first calligraphy set to take my fountain pens to the next level in learning something new.
Wow. Thank you, what a great start!
Love the music in the background and your voice.
I've been looking at so many beginners videos for this and yours is the first one that didn't just jump straight into how to write different scripts.
Thank you for making any entertainment surrounding me suddenly seem a lot more interesting.
Not what I was looking for, but ended up being pretty interesting
Thank you. Back in the 70's, I did calligraphy, just by eye balling it. Now I need a better way, found it in this video! You have been very helpful!
I'll believe anything this guy says
I would watch this even if I wasn't starting to learn calligraphy. His voice is like so awesome!
Hi Everyone! So sorry it has taken me so long to reply to this - been moving the studio and then unpacking and resetting up plus all the work that is on. Really does take it out of you.

Lambert Schlumpf

Lambert Schlumpf
it is me!
:)
My OCD and anxiety is at complete ease watching this.
I was thinking that this whole entire video. You spoke my mind.
+Amanda Alcala lol completely relaxed right? Learning how to write calligraphy is the exact opposite though 😡lol
+Megan Carter Exactly. and getting it right takes soooooo long.
+Megan Carter what does OCD and anxiety have to do with the video? you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.
+tntboom21 I'm really not arguing with someone that can't tell it was supposed to be funny. Me and the other person here clearly do know what I was talking about.
Holy geez this guy is so detailed about everything my calligraphy teacher is teaching me in a much simpler way to do calligraphy.
very educational man...3 months ago I my first calligraphy mostly by instinct and common sense, so glad I came close...but you just thought me 6+ min lesson of a lifetime
First step=posh accent
Second step=own a rolls Royce
Third step=have five corgis
Forth st...
??
????
LOL
3rd step is most important
What nonsense are you on about???
Thank you. I took a Calligraphy class and all the teacher did was make everyone trace letters without explaining anything. I think I need to be self taught for the moment.
P.S. Your voice is majestic!
WOW..... Thankyou, you just made sense of all these books I have that I didn't understand xx

A lot of people can understand it, but not many people ca do it.

Slapped my very own palm into my head realizing this is way to intermediate for I. see you in the foreseen future Mr.Scribble
This man is a work of art on his own.
Such a beautiful piece of art.
Awesome video!! Very nice. Thank you.

A master craftsman at work. Great film.
omg! Thanks for this tutorial. I've been reading a book about this and I couldn't imagine what it says and this video let me visualize what the book says. Thank you!
So great legends work not to tell the tales, so master's voice clarity is too best for learning and learners
Call me crazy but you sound like you have a slightly Trinidadian dialect. Whether, I'm right or wrong, I'm glad to hear it.
I get back watching this over and over again :)
Thank you!
You are THE MAN. Awesome video, beats any other on the internet.
Brilliant!
Not only is he an awesome scribe, but he’s a great instructor as well.

The science of calligraphy is so cool!
Perfectly presented. Thank you so much for sharing this art and giving us a great introduction.
Thank you. You're such a great teacher of calligraphy! and of course very talented.
Where can I see longer videos where you write the whole ABC?
Thank you for a very informative video. This is far more interesting than I even thought! thanks!
This was fantastic. Thank you. My handwriting is atrocious, I am left handed too. I'm starting to learn calligraphy in the hopes I can improve my handwriting.

I'm hearing English, French, Scottish and Indian too. This guy is an enigma!
I'm going to Michael's today, to buy me some stuff! Lol the drawing of the lines is rather confusing to me, but I did smile when he actually started the letters 🥰
Wow, that's much more interesting and amazing that what I ever thought. Congrats!
Awesome. I wished that there would be more videos that I could see for unicial or regular handwriting like in cards
Brilliant video. Can someone expand on his reasoning for measuring with another piece of paper rather than a ruler?
Meu Deus... que voz LINDA...
What type of pen is being used? It's great!
Love the voice and also the info on calligraphy thanks for sharing.
Thanks! A fantastic first lesson for me. You took time to explain very basic concepts that i was not aware of. I will enjoy learning from you!
What a wonderful video for a beginner like me. I struggled with the books I bought but it all makes sense now. Thank you Paul.
Merveilleuse!! Je suis dans 2-Dimensional Design, et tous les choses qu'il a dit sont correct. Je veux qu'il etait mon prof de calligraphie.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom on calligraphy, I learn something new I didn't know about. Keep up the great work.

I find it interesting to learn calligraphy. You gave it start.
Thank you. Very helpful. I plan to learn italics calligraphy. I hope it goes just by watching youtube.
love your handwriting you are amazing , subscribed to you today xxx
Love the ruler , never saw one like it.
I love it! Thank you very much.
I love your traditional method but Instead of having to draw those lines, can I use graphing paper? And just mark where the base line, ascender and etc... are?
What kind of pen do you recommend I use?
This guy has such a wonderful voice. Omg. I love it.
Great tutorial, I'll have to give this a try.
Best pen for beginners and type of paper suggestions? Also is there a good reference book that has many alphabet and letters styles? Thanks.
