I'm just starting to learn calligraphy and bought a book last week. I learned more about the basics in this 6 minute video than the first 10 pages of the book. Now I see why all those lines are important. Excellent video. Now on to practicing.

LOVE this. Modern technology, while convenient, is ruining our entire sense of art, expression, and craftsmanship. How much better the world was when it traveled at a slower pace to enjoy things like calligraphy!

I've been looking at so many beginners videos for this and yours is the first one that didn't just jump straight into how to write different scripts.

I've been making hand made ink pens that are turned on a lathe for years. Some out of wood but most out of acrylic. Today I bought my first calligraphy set to take my fountain pens to the next level in learning something new.
This is the exact opposite of my writing

I have always loved writing and had the desire to learn calligraphy. I've attempted several times when I was younger through books, but never took a real class. It occurred to me the other day I should TH-cam it! So glad I did. This was very informative, especially in regards to the beginnings of letter proportion/formation! Thank you so much. Debbie

Found this really useful! :D Been banging my head against my computer trying to find printable calligraphy paper, but this vid helped me realize that line size matters....and that it's WAY more fun making my own! :D
Sidenote: Saw a couple of comments that said this was way too advanced for beginners, but I had no problem understanding it. I've had to rewind and pause in a few places, just to make sure I'm doing it right, but other than that, I don't see how this is too difficult for beginners; it's just learning how to draw lines on paper, basically. (Though I did spring for that special little ruler at Hobby Lobby; it helps! :D)
A lot of people can understand it, but not many people ca do it.

Wonderful video!! I learned 1/2 a dozen things that I didn't have a clue that I didn't know them lol. And the smooth clear voice just adds to the experience. I'm from Essex but live in the States (I know I lost a bet with God lol) and I get teased more for my slang terms than my accent. I like to say "half the people love my accent and their boyfriends don't ". Lol

I remember Calligraphy and Lettering being part of our primary and secondary school curriculum. I was fascinated with the beauty of it but was too lazy to do it myself. It’s always a lot of work and I didn’t consider it relaxing then. Now I’m watching Calligraphy videos to alleviate stress. Ha.

I love your vids - I taught myself calligraphy as a kid, these are great for all the things I SHOULD have learned!
Could I ask what you recommend for flat/italic fountain pens? I have full Manuscript/Rotring and all other sets, but I keep returning to 60's Osmiroids which are more like my vintage dip nibs. They're not going to last much longer though. Or do you use dippers for final projects? Thanks for any info.
