Mark something weird clicked yesterday (Sunday). I heard a voice in my own head talking to me like I was offering myself a new job Monday morning if I wanted it. Being an "unwanted probably never work a regular job again" old bloke I decided to turn up to my own new job and I started this morning! Dug out all my scrap wood and yep this time I just. got. started. It is amazing what I already had lying around - old screws, old wood, even tools I found in the local tip electro-scrap like a planer! By the middle of the day I was covered in sawdust and sweat but was busy measuring, cutting with my newly bought used mitre saw, gluing and screwing! Then my screwdriver went to sleep as it is quite old! Back in the charger for tomorrow's new blast of work! Of course I could have bought a bench but building a new bench of my own is so satisfying! I am/was an academic type but this "doing" is so therapeutic for me. Usually I'm outside this time of year planting or mowing people's lawns but it is pouring with rain so now I have an indoor creative outlet! This is all thanks to you Mark! I'll video the bench when it's done.
YES! I see a split-top Rubou workbench, with proper mortise & tenons and, of course: pallet "bricks" and reclaimed timber. Amazing. I enjoy your enthusiasm & willingness to share the good & the blunders; & your fixes right on camera for us to see.
Negotiations are under way with the wife to extend my workshop so I can have a lovely workbench like this, she’s a hard negotiator, excellent vid as usual
I've watched about an hour's worth of your videos and find them very informative. Better yet, I like you encouragement and willingness to share and learn from mistakes. Keep it all coming!
And I thought I was a wood womble that couldn't throw anything away. Seems I am an amatuer. lol To coin your very own phrase sir, it's a beautiful thing. And good to see it is square too.
Loved the "musical" dowel hammering @ 6.40. Your humour is brilliant. Also impressed with how your woodworking skills and knowledge have grown. Great use of all the wood and the bench looks cool.
Mark, have you considered building an extension jig that could be used with the table saw, thickener, router table? Using pipes similar to the pipe clamps. Build a pipe cube so you can add height as needed and have wheels on the four bottom corners for portability. Just my thought. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Absolutely legendary build mate, bloody awesome really like the whole build and process... the decorative dowls are nice 👌 even the extra ones 😘 lol, cheers mate 🍻 all around awesome jog,
Hola! Really nice build and equally nice video. I'll catch up and watch your other videos that encompass parts of this build as you mentioned. I really like that "secret compartment", especially the key 🔐 haha. Take care and have a good one, Adios! 👊
Incredible looking bench. Had I only seen the end product and not the actual build, I would have never guessed it was made from reclaimed timber. It looks amazing!
A bench like the bloke.Full of community contributions, a bit rough, but rock solid. Wood from ol'Ned and skate board donations, plans from Yoda Kuffy-san, Dale's mallet, plus god knows how many tips and tricks from around the tubes. A one of a kind and lifetime workhorse. PS - All the best features come from feck-ups 😄
Not only does your work look top notch & your videos are easy to watch with your sense of humor but I love how you admit to & show your mistakes. Keep the vid's coming!
I didn't actually notice the dowels until you pointed it out! But they and the bench still look way cool. The little hide away bit under the bottom shelf is genius by the way 😉 I believe in Ozzy terms this bench would be called 'a rippa' of a bench 👍
Thanx for another great video! I love your commentary. I'd love to make some work tables like those. Hmmm.... I'm also looking into getting my TH-camy Thingy going as well. (Technical terms like those are always great to learn.)
Such a beautiful bench. The reclaimed timber and skateboards makes it even better! I need to make one of these one day and this video will be a great resource! Thank you 🙏🙌
I'm with Bill - Holy moo of a mother cow! And you put your bum on there which is nice because now nobody will ever touch your bench or any of the tools that have touched that spot (bonus)!!
It's a beautiful looking bench mate, what an awesome amount of work has gone into that build. I definitely appreciate the dowel mistake 😂 something I would definitely do😬
Subscribed thanks to Uncle Knackers from "DIY for Knuckleheads" 😆 Also, that outro music reminds me a lot of the music that Scott Brown Carpentry uses in his videos. Coincidence? I think NOT. 😆😆😆 Kidding. Loved this workbench build. Gave me some good ideas for my own next workbench build. Thanks mate!
Do you realize that you made this awesome, really from scratch, workbench with no screws, except for shimming the deadman and the secret key for the hidden skateboard-laminated scraps?! And then there is that "Watch Your Coffee" moment with Kuffy's patented Bum Clamp! You are most determined to excel at this woodworking business...I so admire that!
Looking good mate! Was gonna ask if you are gonna put a tool thingy in the middle but you cleared that up at the end, just a thought when you make one Id make it so it can be flipped so one way up its flush with the top and flip it and put back and it sits 18mm above the work top, this will give you something to push against say for hand planing or how I use my bench dogs - just a thought. Hope youre well mate!
Beautiful bench Mark...the best I've seen. I especially loved the chamfers because they just make a guy happy. You've also started a new "decorative dowel" movement that will reinvent the woodworking world. All joking aside...great job. Thanks for bringing us along on your latest adventure.
Jeeez mate, it is a work of art. So much reclaimed and so much style I am just blown away, you keep raising the bar mate and you deserve every success. Cheers to you mate.
Maaaaate, that's killer! I love the pre-planned superfluous dowels, I might go back and add them to mine 😉 In all honesty though, it looks amazing, well done. Once you get a vice on it and start banging away, you'll wonder how you ever worked on smaller tables, it's a game changer having a big solid bench to pound against. Looking forward to the next one 👍
Man, that looks awesome. Kuffys plan is great. You had me in stitches with the cursing when you realised that the 2nd pair of legs were put in the opposite way. 🤣. Overall a nice SQUARE workbench! 👍
Mark you done great work on the bench buddy it looks really good and as strong as a ox as for the cockup with the dowels, what cockup it's decorative inlay if anyone asks 😀 😉. As always brother 💯% 👍 🇬🇧..
Awesome workbench! In perspective of those (like me) who work mostly with reclaimed wood, this is the perfect workbench! Enjoyed this video, all the best from the lonesome hill in Central Portugal.

I love it, and by the looks of things, you had a great time building it. A few errors along the way, but that's ok. With each error, we force ourselves out of our comfort zones to fix it either with a design change or using an unfamiliar skill. The worst thing that could happen now is if you never make a mistake again, because only through mistake do we really ever learn. Btw, your butt clamp is a lightweight compared to my own, though I'm not sure I should brag about it 🤣🤣🤣👍👍
