      Agree with you here. I can understand being upset if it was within the airlines control but this clearly wasn't within the airline's control. What is he expecting they do take off in those strong winds and wing it? We live in an age where people feel they are entitled to everything. **sigh**

      At least unlike when I was a gate agent with United Express and flights would cancel for weather, the passengers are being civil compared to passengers on this side of the pond. Here, you get told that your parents should personally die because their flight is being delayed/cancelled due to weather, they then complain to management that you said something that you didn't, they insist that an aircraft which isn't capable of landing at their destination (such as a Boeing 747) be used to fly them to their destination, and they insist that it's just a little harmless wind.
      The number of times I was verbally and physically abused by passengers (the physical ones would be removed in cuffs by airport police and charged with assault with the added bonus of a lifetime addition to the No Fly List by the TSA), I was so glad to move to operations, before leaving to train to be a commercial airline pilot after fellow pilots talked me into that path (although my immune system has since brought that path to a crashing halt).

      @@InuKun2008 you are right there. Having lived and travelled in the Americas for most of my life I see those unhinged type of people somewhat regularly at airports. And what's sad about it is the Brits actually fly less than the Yanks so you would expect them to be more startled by IRROPs. At this point I personally move away from the gate when a flight gets delayed or cancelled because it just gets ugly and ruins my day. Much better to deal with an agent at the lounge to get it sorted be amongst the plebs!

      @@InuKun2008 There was a TV show called "Airline" here that was based on a British show. I suspect it was more popular here in the US than it was there because if you even watch a single episode of that show and see how unhinged passengers get and how difficult the jobs are for the employees, it makes it much more difficult to get angry at the airport. I always go to the airport with the expectation that it is possible there will be a problem. It is MUCH easier to fix those problems and MUCH more likely you will get a positive response from the airline employees if you remain calm and work the problem with them. I guess that is true of life in general. 🙂

That was one of my best fares plus a distance and destination bonus ($225+ $150 destination bonus + $50 distance bonus). The passenger tipped well and actually paid to fill my gas tank both ways.

    I flew from LBA to Southampton a few years ago, when the flights were actually badged “Eastern Airways”, not sold via FlyMayBe. It was a blast from the past, because there was no online check in.
    It was also a very windy day, and the flight was heavily delayed. Using Flightradar24, while I was waiting at Leeds-Bradford, I actually watched the preceding flight from LBA to Southampton circle several times at Southampton before attempting a landing. I also watched the same aircraft fly back to Leeds-Bradford before I used it for the next flight south.
    It was still very windy for my flight and it was a bit of an exciting approach at Southampton.
    Due to the delays, I worked out that I would have been at Southampton sooner by taking the train. But the return flight a couple of days later was a different story: quick and efficient.

    I love Southampton Airport. The first time I flew from there was on an early morning flight with FlyBe (on a BAe 146). As usual I had arrived stupidly early, had parked in the long stay car park and was waiting for the shuttle bus. And waiting, and waiting. Just then, a security guard drove up in his van and informed me that the bus hadn't started running yet, and would I like a lift to the terminal? So he very kindly drove me over from the car park. As we were pulling up he said "the terminal should be open by now, but if it isn't, don't worry - I'll show you how you can get in." Friendly place :-)

    I was at SOU a few months before you to go on my annual holiday to my family's villa in PGF. I went with flybe and I was delayed around 3 and a half hours because our aircraft was stuck at BHD with a technical issue. It got to the point that Flybe wanted us to go so they swapped our aircraft with one that was meant to go to EDI. We left nearly 4 hours late for PGF and since it was an evening flight almost everyone wasn't in the mood to have a laugh with the very cheery cabin crew. Then the EDI flight was delayed till around 8PM. The way back was worse as we were supposed to land back at SOU on the return flight at 20:15 but then due to an ATC issue in the morning our flight didn't land in SOU till around 21:50 and I didnt make it back to mine till around 3AM

    With Leeds being the highest airport in the UK conditions can change extremely quickly. I was in ATC on Wednesday 12th December and we went from great vis conditions into LVP’s within 7 minutes. Couldn’t see the jet2 737 on the apron infront of me, nor any runway lights.
    Only aircraft that came in in the 3 hours I was there were 2 Ryanair’s a jet2 and a Primera delivery for jet2 going to multiflight. Every single aircraft using R32 on ILS CATIII.
    Hope this clears up why it was diverted and how quickly conditions can change.

    So glad I stumbled across this video. I flew Flybe from Edinburgh to Belfast (George Best) in later May 2019 - in a De Havilland Dash 8-400. It was a short flight. Easy on, easy off. Left my hotel in Edingburgh, walked about 100m to the light rail stop, which took me right to the airport. Breezed through security (made the security guy laugh), got to George Best, took an express bus in Belfast that was 400m from my hotel. Flybe is as of mid-July 2020 in administration (basically out of business) - think Thomas Cook UK.

    The Arndale (Right in the city)

The food voucher bought us a stale cheese sandwich and a bottle of water with very little choice and we've had problems getting compensation (eventually they paid out our Heathrow Express to Paddington fares but no statutory compensation). • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gas prices are pretty steep here but we're used to it so it doesn't seem so bad. At the moment it's around £1.30 a litre, around $6.22 per US gallon. I think it's more expensive in Norway/Sweden but then their wages are so much higher so probably comparable.

    (Noel this is not for you but the jerks who feel obligated to rip into airline employees) The sun comes up in the morning it goes down at night, everything else is a crapshoot. To be upset because you have been inconvenienced is illogical. The airline has no control over the weather, if you want to have a higher possibility of ending up dead, flying into a 45 mph crosswind is a good way to increase your odds. Airlines May have to close up shop, like other businesses they can run out of cash, it happens folks live with it. While you’re yelling and cursing at an employee because his or her airline has had to cancel flights, pause and think of the person who is losing their job dealing with the anxiety that comes with financial uncertainty.

    Why on earth did you use an Uber? There are plenty trains from Manchester Airport to Leeds where you can pick up a much cheaper Uber to the airport, or even a bus.

    • @noelphilips

      Quickest option on the day. Just wanted home as quickly as possible and to be honest cost was irrelevant.

    2 things. He stopped off and bought me treats for the hour journey ? You have got to me kidding me. 2nd £30 train it would of been if you could of been bothered. People taking advantage of the compensation system is the exact reason. Flight prices are increasing rapidly. Good work.

      Would have been longer on a Train either Via London, Bristol or Birmingham CrossCountry Direct from Southampton but he would have to get there first to Maybe Bristol or Birmingham then CrossCountry to Leeds if he had gone via London Southern or GWR to Paddington then to St Pancras then EMR to Leeds. He was given the drink voucher to buy a coffee which was a fiver that's £25 less than the Train not including Bus/Cab Fair he needed from Southampton Airport to Southampton and Leeds/Bradford Train Station to LBA.

    Hi Noel, I've watched a lot of your videos but this is the first time I've commented on one. Sorry to see that you didn't have the best flight. Hope you have better luck next time. As you live in Nottinghamshire I assume your nearest airport is East Midlands? One of my Aunts (my Dads sister) lives in Ashby-de-la-Zounch, Leicestershire, do you know it? East Midlands is her closest airport and dead easy to get to from her house. I love watching your videos, they're so relaxing, keep them coming. When's the next one?

    Who were the ground personnel at Southampton Eastleigh - were they FlyBE's own 'bods' or from a handling agent? Usually it's Swissport staff who are responsible for the ground ops side of FlyBE. Interesting to notice how at this location Swissport don't handle anything for the Carrier :o)

    Some pax need shooting 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ like i understand your pissed as your flight got cancelled however they are providing you still with a service or an alternative.. now just to clarity some aircraft are limited to cross wind and wind restriction so they cant fly in and out of airport if the wind is too high .. stroms are a pain in the backside for airlines but its winter now guys you have to be expected to be delayed or the worse case cancelled .. at the end of the day its YOUR safety the airline take into consideration here.

    • @noelphilips
      @noelphilips  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I agree there is no need to take it out on the poor member of staff it's not her fault the flight is cancelled, and I'm sure she'd much rather it have gone as scheduled too.

  • @mrgarypaterson

    I always hate to see people berating staff for doing their jobs, the alternative provision offered here seems fine enough to me. It would be nicer if it was a train, but a bus will suffice, claim compensation under EU rules (wonder how that will go with Brexit). The most important thing is not to die obviously 🤷‍♀️
