That last point you made - " Being alone shouldn't make you lonely. It is not solitude that breeds loneliness but a lack of understanding about oneself". I totally agree with it. And its so true isn't it ? Because the best and the most enduring kind of happiness can only be found when one is at total peace with oneself.

Hi Jisoo! I'm a Sophomore at Columbia and I definitly relate to the spending a lot of time alone part! I commend you for taking the time to go out and explore the city alone! It's a big and scary place by yourself so I would often just stay around campus since I was nervous going alone. I will definitely try exploring more this semester

Hi Jisoo, loved the video! I am a freshman going to columbia in my junior year as part of a dual degree, and I also experienced the same loneliness you mentioned at the end of the video my past first sem. I'm also trying ways to explore the city I'm in abroad, which can be challenging, but thanks for reminding me to jump out of my comfort zone and learn to embrace being alone. Would love to meet up once I'm in ny!

Near Barnes at USQ you can also find the Chat & Chew Restaurant, an NYU fave. I think it's on 16 st. BTW. 5 av/ University place and is good for inexpensive eats and prolonged study late into the night.❤ Good luck in school.😊

I love your point about loneliness! Other than the fact I'm an only child raised by WAY OLDER parents (so not relatable to them), I spent about 3 weeks last year in Europe, alone! I also touristed NYC alone as well. We depend on no one to be happy, we can explore alone and be happy alone

i developed severe panic attacks in October 2022. i found hanging out with someone helped reduce the chance of panic attack. but, problem is i could only depend on that person twice. again, i found myself by myself again and learned i would be responsible to dealing with my panic attacks and cannot rely on the presence of another to reduce the likelihood of it occuring. So, in January I restructured my lifestyle with exercise and deep-breathing, knowing if i did not get my panic attacks under control, i would develop agoraphobia and would not leave my house. my classes take attendance & so there was no option to not become stronger and embrace my independence. i guess we are our own heroes.
im happy to hear that you were able to find your strength on your own - im proud of you! while self-dependence is important, also know that you're human, and sometimes you heal better when you seek out help ❤️ good luck!! i hope things work out for you.

i think fomo happens to everyone, so don't beat yourself up over feeling it - it's normal! what helped me get through it is planning out my days + thinking through my priorities. it's important to have fun in college, but fun means different things for different people. in a stage of life where everyone's trying to figure out who they are, spending time by yourself can be just as enjoyable as spending time with other people❤

Hey! Class of 2027 here. If you don't mind me asking, do you feel close to your floormates at John Jay? I'm currently deciding between whether I want a single in Furnald or in John Jay. I'm an introvert but I worry that Furnald might be a little tooo quiet and that I'd have trouble making friends. But then it also has nicer amenities, like AC, more space, cleaner. On the other hand, I feel like John Jay might be more fun and outgoing at times, while still being quiet other times. Have you enjoyed your experience and had fun at John Jay, or if you could go back would you choose another residence hall?
