@paulbudford Ash is a great guy we had a bunch of fun filming this too! The bikes looks great and I'm looking forward to getting the keys cut so we can actual hear it running propperly🤟
@IsnBotterill yeah I will be getting the bike looked over once I've sorted a fix for the cosmetics, this one is a bit special so I want to make sure its done right 🤟
Shame about the fire damaged as it looked a pretty tidy bike for its age, I saw Ash's video earlier so popped here to see the progress. I hope you manage to find the parts required & get this bike back into fine fettle as it deserves to be saved.
Not alot of progress just yet but a new set of keys will be in hand shortly, I'm hoping I can find the parts needed for the cosmetics but haven't had alot of luck so far, but this bike will be saved one way or another 🤟
@@SamsAutoAssortium. Message me mate. I seen Sam one night when he was out delivering. I had a bike in the room which I showed him, I’m now wanting to sell it. Was hoping you could give it a shout out? He knows about it mate. Cheers guys, love both your channels.
FZ750 engine is tough. However they have not held their value anything like as well as the GSXR750 of the same age. Weak point of the engine is the bearing behind the front sprocket (made FAR worse from people over tightening the chain). Replacing this bearing requires a complete engine strip down. Otherwise the engine will last for ages. Chances are that nobody has bothered to set the valve clearances (meant to be done at 28000 miles) as it is a bit of a pain (the cams have to come out to change the shims). Spark plugs are hard to get at with a cheap plug spanner - source a thin walled spark plug socket (I have a Koken one) to make the job reasonable. Headlight is not bad, but as all the power goes through the ignition switch don't be tempted to put in a higher wattage bulb (after a while the wiring through the ignition switch will melt). My 1FN was bad for carb icing in winter when it was my daily transport. Cold damp weather and it would drop to 25mpg (you could see the fuel gauge moving!) and not run below about 4000rpm. The fuel gauge is reasonably accurate. The seats are awful. Rejected by the Spanish Inquisition as too cruel a form of torture. Yours has been recovered, so hopefully they reshaped it and put a gel insert in to make it more comfortable at the same time. If someone has fitted taper roller steering head bearings then they are a complete nightmare to knock out. Taper roller bearing races are not thick enough to leave a lip clear of the frame to drift the bearings out. Yours is a later 2MG one which makes spares a bit easier (simpler rear suspension, simpler ignition system, etc). Unfortunately it means you don't have a centre stand. Given a bit of time that fairing should be easy enough to source. For the locks, pop the top yoke off and take it (with the ignition switch still on) to a locksmith to copy a key. Please don't drill out the locks (if you do then you will land up with non matching locks between the different locks, and pattern locks tend to be poor quality). The fairing inner panels if original are very hard to find (a guy in East Anglia makes GRP replacements) - be very careful not to crack them. Looks like the surround for the choke knob has been replaced (possibly with the 3D printed ones I designed). Brakes are prone to seizing (common to Yamahas of that age). However they are pretty easy to strip down fully and clean out.
Thanks for that it's some very handy information there, the fairings are proving increasingly difficult to find especially with the pain scheme on this bike in particular 😅 I have got a locksmith sorting a key though so hopefully I have that by the end of the week 🤟
@ there are several of that panel on EBay at the moment, but none in the colour scheme that matches. Depending on the time you have, buy one and have it on the bike until one turns up in the right colour. Might take a while, but the bike will be complete and usable until one turns up. Another option would be to use the early FZ750 short side fairings , for which GRP copies are readily available. It would require a bit of fiddling (coils are in a different place, and indicator mounts would need a bit of fiddling), but at least the engine would be nicely on display. The later fz750 can burn a bit of oil. Keep an eye on the oil level.
Cracking bike. Nice wee introduction to your project. This could potentially be your best bike yet. Couple of grand profit? Let’s hope so. A lot of work to go and if you were to put the bike in a garage/dealer to repair, it would be cheaper buying another secondhand. Let’s hope you can save this bike and get her back on the road where she deserves. Notice the enamel paint on engine logo which you could do on pit bike….I’m obsessed 😂
This is certainly the nicest bike I've had so far what they are worth is a bit of a mystery as there's not many around but hopefully a nice profit at the end 🤟 luckily this thing is Mechanically sound as far as we could tell so far so it should just be cosmetics to deal with 🤞
Had a FZ750 back in the 80s, the first model came with small lower side panels intended to show off the 5-valve engine. They only extended down to just under where the FZ Pure Sports transfer is on the fairing on your bike. If you're going to go as cheap as possible you could perhaps cut your current fairing along the bottom of the moulding that's above the yellow line for the same look or try and source a pair of the short panels which may be cheaper than replacing a full fairing. PS I can't believe how skinny the rear tyre looks now 😀
@@SamsAutoAssortium I think Yamaha only used the shorter fairing for the first generation FZ so only came in silver with red logos. At a push you could just remove the lower fairings and leave it like that - it would still look pretty good 👍
Take the lock barrel to somewhere like Holdfast and they can make a key from that, Normally costs about twice as much as having a key cut. I've done it in the past. Also the ignition key fits all the over locks when put in halfway fam
I know this must be a stupid question, but if all those keys are for a Honda, then Copart has given you the wrong set of keys, they must have the Yamaha keys still back in Bristol call them and find out. Shows that I must watch all of the video before I make a comment, but anyway, it is well worth watching it, thanks for sharing it.
Thanks for watching! Copart may well have the keys or they may have given them to someone with another bike but I've already got a locksmith on the case and should have keys by the middle of the week 🤟🤟
So we all just out here buying burnt out bikes from copart😂They must have a right laugh when they see us come to collect these bikes. At lest you got it for free nice little project there 👍🏻
Never had much luck with that in the past but I probably put that down to my cheap screwdrivers 😅 got a locksmith doing a key this week so hopefully no need for busting the lock 🤟

It was very generous of him, and I'll take a look into that now I know I've tagged him bit ill add a link, thanks 🤟
You should do well with that bike. I'd get the front brakes checked out as they may have been affected by the heat from the fire.
