I’m sure people like the way you make us feel good about ourselves. Sock knitting isn’t for everyone…and that’s ok! Love your viewpoint.

I never wanted to knit something at such a tiny gauge. Imagine my surprise when my local yarn shop had a worsted weight sock class! Love my worsted socks. You don't have to learn socks but if the weight of sock yarn is giving you pause- you can knit socks at ANY yarn weight. Or not. Your choice. Be you.

Thank you about the warning about the Van Gogh exhibition. I was wondering about it as an activity for my husband and I on our anniversary, and you verified my doubts.

I’ve just finished knitting my very first sock and I’m proud as punch! This took me 4 months! Started the second straight away as I’ve heard of this 2nd sock syndrome. I can highly recommend Ellie Jones from Crafthouse Magic who does an amazing TH-cam beginners sock tutorial in 3 parts. So you can follow along with her and stop & start. I landed on your Chanel via recommendations & first watched your video about using cheap yarn, patterns & notions! Your info is spot on & very useful for beginners. You can always pick up needles in charity shops but you need to ask as they’re classed as dangerous objects,! Really!! Usually they’re around 50p a pair. Now on with my 2nd sock.

I am a sock knitter and am self-taught. I would encourage you to try. Heel flap and gusset isn't hard, just do it in 3 steps.
I do a slip stitch heel (stage one), heel turn (stage 2), and gusset (which is just picking up stitches along the side (s). You can do it with a crochet hook(step3). Do each part in one sitting (or maybe 2), and you will be done and back to working in the round in no time!
I bought a little wooden helper from Katrinkles that reminds me how to Kitchener up the toe (direction on a Keychain like wooden tag that I keep in my notions bag).
I love handknit socks and just want to encourage you that you can do it. I started on double pointed needles (size Us1) and now prefer 9" chiaogoo circulars (size US 0, 1, 1.5 or 2). You can still opt to do the heels with dpn's. Not a magic loop fan or Two at a Time socks, though I have given both a go. Process knitter, but do so love the end product.
No pressure, just such pleasure to wind up with socks!
    ❤️

I got stuck in the very same mindset and discovered a beautiful pattern of an elf coat in tunisian crochet so I made one and it is beyond stunning. Weighs next to nothing to wear. Simply love it.

I'm just not interested in sock knitting but I do love the myriad of socks yarns. I do knit tiny sweaters for holiday decorating and sock yarns in my opinion are wonderful for knitting them. Also I've paired a sock yarn with a Dk or light weight knitting worsted to knit colorful hats. So enjoy your channel!

I didn’t knit socks for my first 20 years of knitting. I never felt any pressure to do so either. However, I came across a book that inspired me because of the handspun yarn. Learned socks then kept learning lots of techniques. If you ever want to try, start out with worsted weight yarn and bigger needles. Marly Bird has a great tutorial for worsted weight socks. It's a free pattern and her videos take you along step by step. Other great teachers are Ellen of The Chilly Dog, Earthtones Girl and Kay Litton of the Crazy Sock Lady.

I just bought 3 skiens of hand-dyed sock yarn while on a quick trip to Texas and I am not a fan of sock knitting, so this was a good reminder that I can knit other things with it.

Hiya! I love all sorts of scrappy sock yarn projects. At the moment I have a few blankets on the go, a couple of tops, some socks and a cape. They are so much fun and the colours are fab! If you ever wanted to start knitting sock, Stephen West has recently started designing them and his tutorials are just as good and easy to follow as his shawl tutorials. Thanks for all your fab and down to earth videos 😊

Well, you certainly have a new subscriber ! I’ve watched a few of your videos today and I love your outlook on so many topics. I even knit socks, but it’s taken me years to truly “get it”, and so many of those years I felt intense pressure from other knitters that I HAD to learn how to make socks (and sweaters too). I love knitting socks now, but I’m scared to death of taking on a sweater project…and honestly that’s fine! If I never knit a sweater in my life, that’s completely fine. Knitting should always be about expressing yourself creatively however YOU want to, and enjoying your hobby!

i use circular needles for all my knitting, including socks. and somehow socks for me are easier and quicker than jumpers. it probably has to do with sizing - a size 38 is fitting pretty much the same on everyone, while my biggest hurdle, jumpers, are so different on everyone. so i think i am stuck in the "trying to get the fit and size right" hell.

I feel too like I should know how to knit socks and I will probably eventually but not now. I also feel like I should have a wardrobe of hand knits. And I don't. And like I should not be buying fast sashion cause I can knit. I have crocheted one cardigan, knit one cardigan for my mother and that's it. I love doing beanies and scarves, shawls.

      Hey,
I make socks with the afterthought heel now, so there is no purling, what most people dislike on normal heels.
You just make a second toe at the heel. And it fits.

S West shawls are awesome! Some day I’ll make at least one … or 3 or… I love his use of color, color color! Good luck on your knitting “whatever” journey. Fingerless mitts, garter stitch, vertically are sooo much fun (Ysolda Teague has an easy pattern, on Ravelry)…
Thanks for my next Ravelry rabbit hole w your ideas!

Great, comprehensive video! I love knitting socks, but not just. Just started a hat with a ball of sock yarn. One thing I've got to disagree with you about is that they're all soft. There's definitely some good, sturdy, but hard/scratchy sock yarns, which is fine for socks but might be a bit too harsh on hands/face/body. Though I have also heard that German sock yarns are more likely to fall into that category, and that's what I'm mostly used to knitting with.
