Looking at MGB exhaust work turns into a head job

  • Today we had a 1970 MGBGT arrive at the shop to look over the exhaust system. But when he started it up to pull into the shop, it was obvious that there was a more concerning issue with the engine that just might need to be addressed before we even get to his exhaust. After a quick compression test looked worse than originally expected, the owner opted to start with the engine issue first. After removing the head we discovered the root cause of the issue and that this one will need to be sent to the machine shop for some work before we button it back up and move on to the original concerns with the exhaust system.

Great video! I enjoy your content. This is timely as well - which brings me to a question: I am putting the intake and exhaust studs into the head of my 79 MGB tomorrow - what thread sealant should I use? I was going to put Permatex 592 high temp sealant on the threads before running them in. I am concerned about sealing because of the amount of oil that seeps out when you remove the studs. I have the exhaust and intake off as part of my project to change the gasket, rebuild the carb, change gaskets on the tappet covers, and wire-wheel clean my header/intake manifold. One of those jobs that turned into to five things. When I had the header and intake manifold off, I noticed how jacked up the fit was and the combination of fasteners the PO used. I have everything sorted out now, ready to re-install the studs and manifolds, carb, etc. Just wondering about the thread sealant. Thanks again for the great videos!

Those are tapped through to where oil drains down, but the oil there isn’t under pressure. Rarely will they actually leak oil once the stud is installed even without any sealant, but using a little won’t hurt and is a bit of insurance ( if you already have it handy).

@@mgbgtguy thanks for the input on that. All installed now, ready to put my carb on and see how she runs. Looking forward to more of your videos!
