Do you like older British cars? Do you enjoy seeing them get repaired and restored, or just want to learn a little about working on your own? How about a bit of metal fabrication and customization? If so, this channel might be for you. I have a business maintaining, repairing and restoring classic British cars with MG's being the dominant make in the shop and make videos on some of the cars that I work on as well as auto crossing my 1974 MGBGT, building Project Ginsu my 1971 MGBGT LS1 conversion with a BMW IRS, and reviving my 1953 M38A1 Military Jeep.
Non running MGTC EXU.. What was wrong with it?
The 1949 MGTC EXU that came into the shop after sitting 5yrs is now running. Years ago, the owner had started chasing down an electrical issue after it stalled while driving and wouldn’t start again. They did find a wire that looked melted and started to fix that, then moved on to lots of other testing that yielded no results. Due to his age, medical issues and difficulty twisting to get under the dash, it got put on hold for quite a while until deciding to bring it to me. Was the offending wire the issue, or was it something else?

Gathering Of the Faithful-A walk around GOF, not just for T Series anymore
มุมมอง 786วันที่ผ่านมา
This week there were approximately 120 MG’s, many coming in from other States, out and about attending the GOF Central in Newark, OH. The “Gathering of the Faithful” was traditionally a T-Series and older event to celebrate the Pre-War cars, but in recent years, it has expanded to include all MG’s right up to the recently imported MGF’s. We took the opportunity to take you on a walk around to s...
Jack up your MGB from the front properly and avoid damage
มุมมอง 75314 วันที่ผ่านมา
Yes you can damage your MGB jacking it up from the front….it happens more often than you might think! It only takes one slip of the jack to be needing a new radiator and/or damaging the front valance, but if you keep in mind how that can happen, and how to avoid it you can save your self $$ and the hassle of repairs.
Rubber bumper MGB - DIY Questions Answered
มุมมอง 58321 วันที่ผ่านมา
We had a viewer question about the late MGB heat riser assembly and a part he was missing from his. In this video, we take a closer look at the parts and how they fit together. With some simple tools the missing part could be made without much fuss if a replacement couldn’t be located.
1949 MG TC EXU, what is an EXU car anyway?
มุมมอง 1.4K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
We have a rare 1949 MGTC EXU car in the shop today , but before we start working on it, we decided it would be a good idea to look at what makes it different from a “normal” TC. With only about 500 produced, they are pretty rare. Some of you may not have even known about these cars, and others may just not have known what the differences actually are. I do not claim to be an expert on them and ...
MGB has Electrical Problems, one has a surprising cause.

MGTD reverse assembly, how doing it right the first time, saves you $ in the end

What started out as a video of the continuing work on the MGTD assembly project ended up being a good example of some of the most common restoration mistakes that the average person makes. Rushing to put it all back together, just because seeing it in a more finished state after weeks, months or even years of being in pieces, can be very mentally rewarding. But, not taking the time to do it rig...
Dusting off Green Phoenix, plans to get her back on the road

Our 1979 MGB, The Green Phoenix, that we saved from getting scrapped is finally back in the shop…well at least for the long weekend. We had her to a couple shows last summer but some low oil pressure issues have kept us from driving it much since. It was time to blow off the dust and tell you what we have in store for her. First we discuss some plans for the bespoke interior of the car. As you ...

A number of years ago I upgraded my 1974 MGBGT Autocrosser from an overdrive transmission to the Rivergate 5-speed conversion using a Datsun 280z 5-speed transmission. Since it shifted smoothly and didn’t make any odd noises, I figured it would be ok un...
We look under the Riley RMB and try to get the brakes working

We’re back on the ‘52 Riley RMB trying to get it ready for the Columbus British Car Day coming up this weekend. Up until now we’ve confirmed that it will run relatively well, mostly hold coolant, and the clutch and fuel pump are working, but stopping seems to be where our luck runs out. Even though the wheel cylinders look pretty good, the master cylinder doesn’t seem to be pushing enough fluid...

We’re getting close to the British Car Day Columbus and want to debut the 1952 Riley RMB this year. We already know it runs fairly well, so now we need to see if it will actually hold coolant and if the clutch and brakes are working so we can drive it off the trailer and into the show. Moving along on the build of my performance engine for the 1971 MGBGT Autocrosser, we’re ready to assemble the cylinder head. I just bought a 97 safari with only 87k miles. Would you recommend doing this as a precaution?
very straighforward, well paced explanation. Thank you.
My first car was a 1949 MG TC EXU which I purchased in 1966 for $1,200, in Southern California . It was everything a 17 year old could have wanted. Great looking, sporty, different and a car that all the girls noticed. With the mild weather in SoCal it was an everyday driver. What a great memory.
The last EXU I worked on was stored since 1966 until it was bought and brought to me (2012 maybe) to put back on the road. After driving it for probably 3 or 4 yrs he sold it on BAT. It ended up going back to England.
Outstanding video and presentation. Beautiful MG
Years ago we to the 30th anniversary of the Bugeye Sprites in Carlisle (1988) to be exact. It was such a blast. Great channel here. Thanks for the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for shooting this video. I've shared it with friends who weren't able to attend. Glad you found Brian, the new owner of the TD you restored. Jim (the LE50 guy)
It was good to meet you and look at an LE 50 in person. It was also good to meet Brian, as I have been wondering where that TD was, and I’m glad to see it is in good hands. 👍🏻
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
I used to own an Austin 1100 and an MG Magnette. I was attracted to weird cars.
Me too. I have actually had 3 Magnettes (one now belongs to a friend) and even a crappy NSU Sport Prinz for a short time 😁. I like stuff that would be potentially the only one at a car show.
Thank for the show review!
Our pleasure!
Get rid of the quater light window, doesn't flow. Sheet metal w/maybe louvers?
Those remanufactured parts never fit properly. Best to cut the pad leaving about 1/2" border enabling the edges to be more maneuverable or better still buy some radiator surround piping and use that.
What year is that engine block? My 1960 metropolitan has three main caps. That one has five. Seems like its far superior engine block.
My block is a 1974. They redesigned it to a 5-main in late ‘64 for the ‘65 model year
Always an outstanding video and presentation. Thank you
Yeah, there´s a nice mod on the old Riley RMs as well. The front crossmember there has a hollow recess and lends itself to cutting a nice hardwood block and placing it in the recess and drilling two holes towards the back of the recess where one can then run two wood screws to hold the block. Makes for a nifty jacking solution for the front if you paint the wood a matt black to match the crossmember. The rear is another story since a floor jack centerd on the rear differential will lacerate the oil drainage plug which is proud of the differential at the very center below. I have decided to carve a hardwood cradle to fit the differential to solve this anomaly as the standard Smiths jacks the RMs came with are NEVER to be trusted since the jacking points are known to be as prone to collapse as readily as the jacks themselves..
Another jacking question: what instructions should a person give to a mechanic who is about to put hoist supports under the MGB? The front is easy, there are rails. The back is the problem, especially as the wheels are still on the car. Ideally I like it to be rolled onto a four post hoist but that’s not always feasible. Thx
On chrome bumper cars, I flip up the short part of the lift arm pad and place it right in front of the front spring eye on the bracket. In rubber bumper cars I put the pad under the spring as far back as I can. it seems like it would be a bit unstable, but it works better than you would think. You just have to be cognizant of it and not rock the car as it can slip forward if you do. Technically you can use the pinch welds as you would on a more modern car, but i never trust what’s under the paint 😁
@@mgbgtguy Thanks, I’ll remember that!
that is a great tip, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Yuuup 100% saw a guy do this and he got super lucky as he just got about one pump into it before it sllipped. Would have destroyed his frontend if it was a few pumps more.
I haven’t seen anybody do it, but I’ve heard about it plenty of times
@@mgbgtguy would love to see the jacking teqnique for every car, as I never know what I'm going to be working on of the car club member cars, and could just search and find these videos in the future.
I replaced the master and slave cylinders on my resto 62 MGB, and for the life of me couldn't get them to bleed so the clutch would work, until I used your method. Made a cap and used my cordless tyre inflator. Thank You, great video!
I’m glad my video helped you 👍🏻
What happen
It is still waiting for us to tear into it and find out. We think either the balance shaft bearings are out of it (which seems fairly likely with all the antifreeze that was in the oil ) or the flex plate cracked.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
A video in response to question is a good idea. You have enough going on in the shop, but a diversion is always good.
Wow, a personalized reply and so two thumbs up. As long as I need to pass CA emissions, I am trying to put everything back to original on a 78 B and this will help me fabricate the lower plate. Shortly the rebuilt engine going back in and down to the smog check station to get one more MG back on the road that has been hibernating. All the best!
Another interesting video. Is the heat riser on all B's or is it part of the USA spec/emissions doohickey
It’s US spec emissions stuff
Always an outstanding video and presentation.
Late to the repair party here, but I realized I am missing the forward shield under the manifold and heat riser shroud you referenced on a 78 B rdstr. Can't seem to locate the part, description or drawing, but saw a rough sketch in Haynes. In California so stuck retaining the the lousy manifold. Appreciate any direction to part or picture and your videos have surely helped speed my engine rebuild.
@DavidsProcessWest I made a quick video that I put up on the channel today to show the parts and give you (and anyone else that needs this info) a good look at the parts and how they go together. I hope it answers your question adequately and helps you complete your project 😀
Thanks for sharing this story.
Thanks for watching!
May have to get this done on my 05 safari...thanks for the info/video.
No problem 👍
What these things didn't have was a gas gauge so you wouldn't run out of gas . As far as I'm concerned, these car should have come with pedals so you could pedal it back to the shop.
What a beauty. I look forward to seeing more videos on this MG.
i live bourbon too!
Great video
How did the suspension feel? Car sounds great and pulls well I think
I haven't done any adjustments yet, so at this point the only real difference is the slightly stiffer springs than stock. Remember though, this suspension set up doesn't actually change the geometry, it really just gives easier ride height adjustment, and adjustable shock stiffness.
Very helpful! Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!
Since 2003 ‘61 red mga1600 owner: I think the under windshield rubber flap on yours is to far fwd and too wobbly, water will penetrate dash if you ever hit a rain shower…..and mirror at windshield side is crap…..other than that: great MGA! 😂🏎️
The windshield seal was just temporarily installed at the time as the owner was going to send his other windshield frame to be re-chromed, and didn’t want the seal cut to size until we finally installed that one. 👍🏻
@@mgbgtguy aha…….move mirror and install those side windows deflectors…..
Always an outstanding video, presentation and fix topic. Thank you.
Thanks again!
I learned how to trace blown fuse issues from my dad in 1970 on my brother's 1968 MGB GT and eventually ended up with a degree in electronics and worked for IBM for 40 years thanks to that early experience. I still remember that solid state voltage rectifier/regulator inside the Lucas 16ACR alternator that blew so easy and cost so much.
Great story. The Prince of darkness (Lucas) jumpstarted your life long work carrier.
To paraphrase from Casablanca: "I am shocked, absolutely shocked, there are electrical problems on an MGB" 😂😁
Good catch !!

New to your channel after just purchasing a 1970 mgbgt which requires some work. Enjoying your content
Welcome aboard! I do hope you enjoy your new MG, and I hope that my content helps you to make the car everything you want it to be
These are fantastic cars on the road. Please ensure it is restored. Excellent parts and Riley RM club in the UK.
She does sound sweet
I have one of these systems, while nice sounding they do have their issues. And now after 6 years part of the muffler inside has come loose and now rattles some, probably a baffle loose. I will replace the muffler with something else and just keep the pipes. I'd never pay what they want for them now. Oh, I also when through two of the TT headers and ended up going back to the stock manifold. Moss did replace both headers and then finally sent me the non-header version. Both headers had alignment issues. They were horribly built and I suspect taken out of the welding jig while hot and warped there after.
After installing a number of these systems over the years, I do believe the supplier for the system has changed a few times. I have noticed some differences over the years, And right about the time you would’ve bought yours I noticed a little decline in quality for a little while and then I think they changed the suppliers as at that point in time I was seeing bigger, alignment issues, and then it got better.
Enjoying your channel Keep up the good work !!
Thanks 👍
Im glad to see the Green Phoenix is still alive and waiting its turn for its next phase of restoration.

How much did it came cost you
The metal I made the fender’s out of was leftovers at the fab shop I was working at, so it didn’t actually cost me anything.
How difficult is mating the Datsun transmission to the MGB?
Well, it’s a kit that sold by a company called Rivergate, so it’s as easy as following the instructions. The hardest part these days is finding a good 280 Z transmission at a reasonable price without driving hundreds of miles to go get it.
I'm toying with the idea of an mx5 box in my B, though the original seems much better than it was since I fitted thackary washers on the gearstick retaining plate
Those washers ( and the correct stepped shank bolts) are important to the shifter feel on the original transmissions. Also the bushing at the bottom, on the shifter ball as the gear stick will vibrate and be sloppy without it.
@@mgbgtguy 👍mine was in bits when I got it so I didn't know about either the shanked bolts or the washers.
