Shop update 01/05/25
This week we’re catching you up on what’s happening in the shop. The MG TF is gone, but the Healey 3000 remains-and for a very intriguing reason. Meanwhile, the Green Phoenix is going to go into storage while we tackle the engine rebuild, and the MGA is in its final stages of metalwork so it should be going home soon as well. We’ll also be getting back on the MG TD assembly pretty soon too. We have a plan for reorganizing the shop, and setting up a dedicated metalworking area with the new shear. Plus, we finally tackled some unfinished work on the shop and installed the garage door opener! Stay tuned as we are working towards jumping back into Project Ginsu.

The Green Phoenix MGB, How Bad is the Engine ?
มุมมอง 2.4K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
“The Green Phoenix” is getting some love ! In today’s video, we tear down the 1979 MGB’s engine to uncover the cause of its low oil pressure after warm-up, and get it ready for the machine shop. We already know it has a wiped cam, but how worn are the bearings? Will we find any big surprises? We disassemble everything down to the bare block, inspect each component, and ask the big question: has...

In the conclusion of our 1954 MG TF diagnostic series, we dig deeper into the mystery behind the knocking noise by inspecting the center main bearing-only to be left with more questions than answers. After cleaning out the oil pan, we discuss an easy way to prime the oil pump to prepare the engine for startup. Finally, it’s time to fire up the engine and see if we’ve made a difference. Did our ...

Today, we’re diving into the heart of our project car, the Green Phoenix, a 1979 MGB we saved from the going to the junkyard. After discovering dangerously low oil pressure and a wiped camshaft, we’re taking out the engine to prepare it for a full rebuild. Follow along as we tackle this first step to getting it running strong again. Will the Green Phoenix rise again?

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely, you should be able to. The brakes on the Mgb are actually quite good and very well balanced, especially considering the timeframe the car was designed. I have seen a number of cars come through my shop that did not stop very well at all, and it almost always comes down to the actual brake pad material. Changing front pads and/or rear shoes can make a huge difference as some of the stuff available today just isn’t very good.

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The oil color would be optional, so it’s standard for it to be bypassed like that. My opinion is for normal street use, it depends on the average weather conditions where you live as to whether an oil color may be needed or not. I live in Ohio, the average temperature. Here isn’t high enough that an oil color is needed, and actually could be detrimental in the colder weather that we experience as it takes too long for the oil to heat up and start flowing properly if you don’t have an oil cooler thermostat installed. If I lived in someplace like Arizona where it stays hot, it would be worth installing an oil cooler.

    • @windmill1965

      @@mgbgtguythank you for your reply. I share your opinion that it depends on the climate whether an oil cooler can be beneficial. I’m in a tropical climate and therefore very reluctant to delete the oil cooler from my 1964 MGB.

    The AA chapter of the shop manual sadly does not feature a good look at the rear of the 2 1/2 engine...just checked mine...but I know that engine indeed has two freeze plugs side by side at the back between the cylinder head and the bellhousing...so you do have two chances for antifreeze weeping its way down to where you are noticing it. Please keep us abreast of your work on your RMB as I have an RMA from 1950 and picked up on the concomitancy of parts between the TFs and the RMs since they were assembled accross the street from one another in Abingdon and parts bins from Lucas and Girling may have been shared extensively!

    Quick question. Why would The Early Head bead desirable for an owner? it's not like collectors pulling a valve cover to look at date stamps or is that it? • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Being an early head, it has no air injection ports, so it would keep an early US market car correct. Some owners really do want all the correct parts, including date codes, even if it takes pulling the valve cover to see it. The early cars are starting to get valuable enough for these details to make a difference.

      @mgbgtguy 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the Mgb‘s and Midgets are affordable enough that you don’t necessarily need to be a “bored well healed old white guy” to own them. The cost of entry isn’t that high, parts are readily available and pretty affordable compared to other cars. I think the biggest thing is just being educated enough to know what not to do with them so you don’t cost yourself more time and money than necessary. One of those is if you’re in the US to seek out the proper oils to put in them so you don’t have an engine that looks like this when you tear it down.

    Reminds me of a 1972 MGB GT I once bought fairly cheap on E-bay. It had a Gold Seal replacement engine that was re-bored by +0.030" to 1860cc with Peter Burgess cylinder head, Maniflow manifolds, etc., but ran pretty poorly along with oil leaks, etc. I fitted a Weber 45DCOE hoping to improve the performance, took it for a flat-out run along a dual carriageway and saw a huge plume of smoke out the back window, then it ran even rougher, on 3 cylinders! Turns out, it had blown a hole in the piston crown of #4 cylinder. I swapped it for a bog-standard 1800 engine bought cheaply locally, re-fitted the twin SUs and it ran pretty well after that. Got my money back by selling the rest of the old engine; someone even bought the manky bottom end!

    Looks mighty familiar. I just rebuilt the motor in my '80 MGB. Sure learned a lot! Cam and crank all were within specs, no scoring, no issues anywhere in the bottom end. Like you said here, the cam bearings were in good shape, all within spec. Bottom end of these engines are pretty tough. The smog head, however, was cracked between cyls 2 and 3. Not surprised. Found an earlier model head, machine shop dressed and leak checked it, all OK. Motor back in the car and getting close to startup. It's quite the money pit, but it's been a lot of fun. Thank you for your excellent tutorials and experienced guidance!

      If your cam was in spec, you were lucky. I rarely see a cam come out of an engine that I work on that is within spec. But of course, here in the US, the government regulations on our Oil has changed the game. The proper oil has to be specifically sought out, and unfortunately, a lot of newer owners don’t know about that.

    Many years ago a room mate of mine in aviation school had a 1965 MGB with wire wheels. The crank shaft end of the connecting rod ends got out of round. We replaced it with a later salvaged engine and ran it many years. He sold it to a kid that kept bugging him. A week or so later he burnt the car to the ground. He drove it over bumps in the road until the gasket between the manifold and exhaust pipe was gone. He flooded the engine, gas dripped on the exhaust, and the car burned until the battery stopped running the fuel pump.

    I would say that that engines been a part once before if that truly is a 79 engine, it should have the flat sided crank the crankshaft with the bell shaped counterweights is an earlier design. There’s nothing wrong with it. It will work in that engine I would suspect loss of oil pressure is through the pump or the oil pressure relief valve is sticking

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The cast crank that’s in it is correct for the late engines, the flat sided ones were pre 1976. We had shimmed the relief valve prior to pulling the engine just to see what would happen. We didn’t show that the cam bearings showed a fair bit of wear, and the oil pump was scored up a bit too ( it was getting late, and we didn’t really look at those until the next day after the video was edited and uploaded)

      The prices have actually come down a little on those since I made the video. I think they were closer to $110 at that time.

    The distributor to rotor alignment is irrelevant as this is a digital ignition system. The ecu sets/adjusts timing, so as long as it's not 180 out you're good to go.

      I’m used to working on older stuff, and at this point couldn’t bring myself to pull any dizzy without marking it first.

    Only need to replace bolts if the old ones are corroded

    The dissy can only go in 2 ways, there's really no need to mark anything as long as you don't turn the engine after you take it out

    When mounting the new rod bearings did you use any kind of lubrication? If so, what do you prefer to use?

    • @mgbgtguy
      @mgbgtguy 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I used Permatex Ultra Slick assembly lube

    WITH 116 cr on num 3 MAY be push rod noise

      Off camera, I took the side cover off to look at the push rods and lifters, I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary

    sounds terrible to me, but audio on youtube is no way to make judgements on engine noise IMO. i would suspect the odd grinding on the crank as the possible source of the problem.

      I can tell you that it does sound a bit different standing next to it than it does on the video. Especially in the first video the knocking noise that came through in that video was not nearly as apparent in person. There is definitely a low grumbling sound underneath it all that the mic doesn’t pick up well.

    Motor still sounds pretty sick to me. I would not want to chance driving it very far. Anything wrong with the valve gear i wonder besides other issues. You will definitely be getting it back in the spring. Happy Christmas.

    It almost sounds like wrist pin, knock it’s a quick double taping noise even when you rev the engine does the flywheel have to be balanced with the crankshaft as an assembly?

    • @Bristolcentaurus
      @Bristolcentaurus 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      its preferable to balance both as an assembly including the clutch assembly

    Not being there its hard to say but wasnt your stethoscope focused on the center of the engine bottom end? Smells like wrist pin slop or bearing slop to me. Wont know until that crank is properly balanced. But wow are those xpag cranks rarer than hens teeth and as expensive as gold
