What I find really interesting and so good is that you're able to read Vietnamese and able to translate it into English, 3.5 years in Vietnam spoken like a true local as well.. I can't wait for your adventures outside of Saigon..
Can someone from Vietnam provide feedback on the pronunciation and tones? How would you rate them: very good, pretty good, so-so, or not so good? His skills are impressive and he can be easily understood, I'm just curious.
I think Americans have a lighter accent when they learn Vietnamese with the northern accent. Chris is a good example. His Vietnamese is perfect. No accent at all. I’ve come across 2 TH-camrs that sound just like native southerners, but way more TH-camrs that sound just like a native northerners. Max used to have problems with tones, but his tones are great now. His pronunciation has improved drastically. I would rate him as pretty good. He knows enough to get by. I was surprised watching the videos of him in Hue. Even some Vietnamese has trouble understanding central accent and Max had no problem in his videos. As great as Chris is with his Vietnamese. He had/has trouble understanding people in the South but Max didn’t seem to have a problem understanding people in the North.
Max, I have been watching you for four years from States, still now and I am inpressed everywhere you go for food critics in VN you have your own charisma that everybody loves you in VN, it is not only that, you have brought the nice and kind American characteristics to Vietnamese people, keeping up with your video Max!
I just found your channel/videos and its frustrating how amazing your Vietnamese is...but your are so humble and the videos are informative without propping yourself up or rubbing it in anyways faces. My family and I visited Hanoi, Yen Tu, Ha Long and Quang Nihn in August and had it not been for your infectious enthusiasm and excellent reviews of various fine dishes, we would have had a very different experience on our first Vietnamese visit. There are other ‘tubers’ that offer videos a bit like yours, but none come over as genuine and positive as yours, much as they’re all very capable, we really appreciate what you have done and continue to do - thank you for sharing all of your ‘travels’, be well and stay safe.
Nem chua is simply the best tasting fermented food ever! Out of curiosity, I googled this food and found that per RMIT University research the nem chua produces a compound that is more robust than Nisin, which is a licensed food preservative to keep food fresh by killing harmful bacteria, etc. What a food invention. The research paper is called "How a Vietnamese raw pork snack could help us keep food fresh, naturally." 🇻🇳
I am a Vietnamese with US citizen. I live 8 months in Saigon and 4 months in Oklahoma every year. However , I can not handle foods in VN like you. I think you have extremely strong stomach since you can eat so many street food items especially drinking ice tea without any health problems. I give you 5 stars on that.

Bun Quây Phu Quoc is a quite new dish in VN . Many Vietnameses are still not familiar with that soup . I only heard about it a year ago but have never tried it yet . Many people told me that the broth is absolutely tasteless , not as savory as Pho , Hu Tiu , Mi , Sui Cao , Bun Bo Hue , Banh Canh , Bun Thang , Bun Rieu , Bun Oc , Bun Moc or many other Vietnamese Buns . What's your honest opinion about that dish ? How do you rate it on one to ten scale ?
First, Bun Quay is not a new dish. The central and southern people mostly know Bun Quay well. Second, the broth isn't tasteless. It's supposed to be light and naturally sweet from pure seafood paste and pork bone :). If it tastes way more savory, it'll turn to Bun Ca Nha Trang or Bun Moc's broth.
I am a Saigon native and now living in Ninh Thuân province , but never heard of that dish before . It must be new for the majority of the Vietnamese people . That's why the restaurant owner has to post up the instructions on the wall to direct the customers how to eat that soup . Many friends of mine told me they have tried it once in Phu Quoc island but didn't like it . For them the broth is tasteless , completely bland . Maybe I have to try it once in order to deliver a fair and accurate verdict @@trinhintranslation

The first time I came to know and ate Bun Quay was already 15 yrs ago. It's actually a variation of Bun Tom Binh Dinh that BD fishermen brought to Phu Quoc, then PQ locals made their own version. Your friends might eat at a bad Bun vendor, or their tastebuds must be lacking. The broth is supposed to be light, that's why almost every bite has to be eaten with dipping sauce.
Bun Quây is for sure quite new for most of the Vietnameses . It must be a very local dish , not well known over VN like the other soups . I am 73 years old and never heard of it till now . I already went 4 times in Phu Quoc ( the last time was in 2018 ) and haven't seen any Bun Quây restaurant back then . Today there is a lot of new delicious dishes that never existed 20-40 years ago such as Banh Trang Nuong , Banh Trang Tron, Lâu Ga La E , Cua Rang Me , Kem Bo Dalat , Kem Khoi and many more .
