Is Footwashing a Biblical Requirement? | Episode 87

  • In John 13:14-15, Jesus tells His disciples, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you." Does this mean the practice of footwashing is a biblical requirement, or did Jesus only mean that believers should look for practical ways to serve one another?
Dr. David K. Bernard answers this question with a review of both the Scriptures and the history of revival movements, including the early twentieth-century Pentecostals.
In this episode, Dr. Bernard references the book "Footwashing in John 13 and the Johannine Community" by John Christopher Thomas, available at www.amazon.com....

I am Apostolic Pentecostal & we had Lord Supper on at my church in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on December 18, 2022 & washed feet during it. The women with woman & the men with the men. I believed that I must wash the feet of a Saint that I don’t know very well or have much interaction with & *not* my friend. The Lord opened up the opportunity to wash the feet of this older woman who sometimes stares at me in church & she washed my feet. Imagine, our God, the creator of the ends of the earth & all that we can & cannot see, robed Himself in flesh & washed the feet of who He had created. This is one of the many reasons why I love & adore Him. He is worthy of all my praise! Suggest *that* to King Charles and see what he’d say…🇨🇦

I see this as a way of showing humility and love. I know I was always a person grossed out by feet, but the more I got into the word and got to know God and was filled with the Holy Spirit, I saw it what it really was. And I now willingly wash my husband and mom’s feet. It shows me as being humble and having no pride and showing love for others.

There’s a blessing involved in foot washing; I experienced it last year at Holy Consecration in Lynchburg. Communion and foot washing, where Jesus completed a healing in my body towards the end of 2022. It’s both humbling to do it and to receive it and it has the power to change your life!

Thank you, Bro. Bernard, for your podcast on foot washing! I have had that very subject on my mind here recently and have gone over in my mind the possibilities of “whether or not” this teaching of Jesus to his disciples should be taken “literally” today as He commanded his disciples back when foot washing was an “actual custom” performed by servants in the house you were visiting/living. Bishop, you made several statements that really helped me understand the “beauty” of this practice in our churches today. Now, I know that our culture is different today (like you pointed out). We have paved roads, travel more in vehicles instead of walking practically everywhere we go, etc., so foot washing seems obsolete and unnecessary today. However…I believe that Jesus washed his disciples feet “NOT because they were dirty and needed washing…not because it was a part of their culture in that day for it to be done-He did it to show them that “that particular act” required him to humble himself and take on the attribute of a “servant” in order to perform this practice. I like what you said, that if someone is trying hard to think of ALL the reasons WHY foot washing should NOT be done today…🤔…probably is the EXACT reasons why it SHOULD be done today as was done by Jesus to his disciples. The foot washing services that I have been “privileged” to participate in in my past have been beautiful and very moving services with the Lord’s presence so near! Beautiful blessings have been poured out by the Lord in these humbling services and sisters drawn closer to each other and closer to the Lord! Also, this is the most perfect time for trespasses to be forgiven. If someone has had a problem forgiving a sister or a brother for something he/she did in the past…foot washing can humble a person to the point that that bitterness can just melt away as you “wash the feet” of the one you feel has wronged you in the past. But, we must have the right attitude… the right mindset…toward this beautiful practice in order to reap the benefits! Thank you, once again, Bishop, for your words today! ❤️❤️🙌🙌

Many ask their Priest or Pastor if speaking in Tongues as the Spirit gives utterance is needed to be Saved and they say something like, "Definitely not." Or they think something like, "I don't think I want to get involved with that speaking in Tongues type thing, that's a little too weird and hardcore for me." They say that because they don't know about the following scriptures, or have ignored them. Please note the information below is not taught at any Catholic or Protestant Church, nor is it taught at any Catholic or Protestant Seminary School, or at any Catholic or Protestant Divinity School.
The following is some word for word scriptures about speaking in Tongues as the Spirit gives utterance:
Jesus said in Mark 16:17,"And these signs shall follow them that believe, In my name shall they cast out devils, they shall SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES."
Acts 2:3-4, (Pentecost),"And it appeared to unto them cloven TONGUES LIKE AS OF FIRE, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST, and they began TO SPEAK WITH OTHER TONGUES as the SPIRIT GAVE THEM UTTERANCE."
Acts 8:14-17,"Now when the apostles, which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. 15 Who when they were come down, prayed for them that they MIGHT RECEIVE THE HOLY GHOST. 16 For as yet he was fallen upon none of them, only they were BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. 17 Then LAID THEY THEIR HANDS ON THEM and they RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST."
Acts 9:17-18, (Paul's baptism) "And Ananias went his way and entered into the house, and PUT HIS HANDS ON HIM and said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto you in the way as you came, has sent me, that you might receive your sight, AND BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes that as it had been scales, he received his sight forthwith, and arose, and was BAPTIZED."
Acts 10:44-48, (Peter speaking to Cornelius and those with him), "While Peter yet spake these words, THE HOLY GHOST FELL ON THEM which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, that on the Gentiles also was poured out the GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST. 46 For they heard them SPEAK WITH TONGUES and magnify God, and then answered Peter. 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be BAPTIZED, which have received the HOLY GHOST as well as we. 48 And he commanded them to be BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD."
In Acts 19:1-6, Paul met 12 believers in Ephesus and asked them, 2 Have you received the Holy Ghost since you BELIEVED? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were you baptized? And they said unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. 6 And when Paul LAID HIS HANDS ON THEM, the Holy Ghost came on them, and they SPOKE WITH TONGUES and prophesied." Those scriptures prove that just because a person is a believer does not mean they are automatically saved, and just because a person is a believer does not mean they automatically have the Holy Ghost.
Jesus said in John 7:38-39,"He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly SHALL FLOW RIVERS OF LIVING WATER. 39 But this he spoke of the SPIRIT, which they that believe on him should receive, for the HOLY GHOST was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified."
Paul said in Galatians 1:12 that he was not taught by any man, but was taught by Jesus himself, which means that everything Paul said was exactly what Jesus told him to say.
Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14:2,"He that SPEAKS IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE EDIFIES HIMSELF...."
Paul said that Jesus said in 1 Corinthians 14:21,"In the law it is written, With men of other TONGUES and other lips will I speak unto this people, and yet for all that, THEY WILL NOT HEAR ME, saith the Lord." Verse 39 says, "Wherefore brethren, covet to prophesy, AND FORBID NOT TO SPEAK WITH TONGUES."
The following scriptures prove that when a person speaks with tongues as the Spirit gives utterance, it is at that moment the Spirit of Christ initially dwells in them:
Paul said in Galatians 3:27,"For as many of you as have been BAPTIZED into Christ HAVE PUT ON CHRIST."
Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14:22,"Wherefore TONGUES are for a SIGN (or PROOF they received the Holy Ghost)...."
Paul said in Romans 8:11,"But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies BY HIS SPIRIT THAT DWELLS IN YOU." That is referring to being raised up to meet Jesus in the air at the Rapture which is referred to in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18, which Paul also wrote. If a person has not been baptized in Jesus Name, meaning Jesus Name is invoked at baptism which is Acts 2:38, Acts 8:14-18, Acts 8:38, Acts 9:17-18, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 16:33, Acts 18:7, Acts 18:8, Acts 19:3-5, and Acts 22:16 - which all of those WERE FOR THE REMISSION OF SIN, (Acts 2:38) and has not been baptized with Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit, they will not have that Spirit that will allow them to meet Jesus in the air at the Rapture, and therefore not be Saved. All the above is exactly what Jesus meant in John 3:7,"You MUST be born again." In John 3:5 he said, "Verily, verily I say unto you, Except a man be born of water AND of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God." Regarding Baptism - Jesus said in Mark 16:16,"He that believes and is BAPTIZED shall be saved, but he that believes not shall be damned." There Jesus links not being baptized with damnation. Being born of water is being immersed in water (baptized) in Jesus Name, being born of the Spirit is being baptized with the Holy Ghost.
If you are convinced you need to get Baptized in water in Jesus Name and get Baptized with the Holy Ghost, do a search, type in "United Pentecostal Church International", scroll slightly down to just below the red box, type in your zip code, then a screen will show a Church nearest you that will do that. If you do all of the above you will be making SURE your name is written in the Lamb's Book Of Life. .
No Catholic Church will do it because they condemn water baptism in Jesus Name and declared it INVALID in the New Catholic Encyclopedia Volume 2, page 66, the Catholic Encyclopedia, also in Catholic Catechism 232, 233, and 1226-1284, and also in Chapter 7 of the 16 chapter Catholic Didache. No Protestant Church will do it because they teach water baptism is not needed, but Jesus said in Mark 16:16,"He that believes and is BAPTIZED shall be saved, but he believes not shall be damned. "They also say baptism was not done in Jesus Name, and that it is a "Outer sign of an inner change", but all of the above proves it MUST be done in Jesus Name. Some say the Thief on the Cross next to Jesus was not baptized but Jesus told him he would be with Him that day in Paradise. Jesus had not given the COMMANDMENT to be Baptized in water in His Name until after he rose from the dead and just before He ascended into heaven. The Thief or anyone else at that time could not have done it because they did not know about it.
Jesus said in John 10:37," My Sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

    John 13:12-17
[12]After Jesus had washed their feet, he put his outer garment back on and returned to his place at the table. “Do you understand what I have just done to you?” he asked.
[13]“You call me Teacher and Lord, and it is right that you do so, because that is what I am.
[14]I, your Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You, then, should wash one another's feet.
[15]I have set an example for you, so that you will do just what I have done for you.
[16]I am telling you the truth: slaves are never greater than their master, and messengers are never greater than the one who sent them.
[17]Now that you know this truth, how happy you will be if you put it into practice!
    >Nope! It's not biblical requirements. Jesus just set up an example , on how to humble oneself. Jesus had used this acts to demostrate or to put into action, physically, what humbleness is all about.

Hi, I have a question for Bishop Bernard that has come up recently.
With the Jewish name of Jesus being Yeshua, why is it that we do not normally use the Jewish translation of his name in English, Spanish etc? Furthermore, how did translators derive Jesus from the original Yeshua?
    Thank you!

Thank You! I agree with everything you said about "footwashing". I'm not against it and understand it's valuable teaching...... BUT...... I still think it's a weird practice/ritual/ tradition. Why? First, it's obsolete. Our feet aren't exposed to the elements these days. So, even when we do this as a literal Biblical commandment it doesn't have the same benefit. It's purely symbolic. To be honest......... it's a little bit uncomfortable NOT because it's humbling.............. It's because it's so personal.
Why does it seem so personal? Because it's not something that's really needed anymore. So, it's weird touching other people's feet for absolutely no practical reason whatsoever. It seems intrusive and intimate rather than humbling. Let's face it....... not everything Jesus and the Apostles did can, should, or needs to be duplicated. Some things are simply part of ancient culture. Things do change.
Regardless, reducing Jesus' example of service and humility into yet another kinda creepy useless tradition and ritual seems wrong somehow. Especially when the whole point of Jesus teaching us this example becomes obvious a few scriptures later when he reveals his newest commandment........
John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
May the spirit of the One God (revealed, expressed, and manifest through Jesus the Christ) lead us into perfect unity........... (even when we have to touch each other's "feet").

I know the question might be for brother Bernard, but if you have them read the rest of verse 7 it says “and these three are one” which I’m sure you’ve read it and know. Through time you have 3 manifestations of God..
He is the Father in creation
He is the Son in salvation
He is the Holy Ghost in redemption
But these three are one and His name is Jesus.
Now where it says in verse 7 “the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost.” Walk them through what the “Word”is go to John 1:1/1:14 etc. etc.
It all makes a full circle back to who God is, it’s Jesus.
Ultimately what I have found especially on TH-cam is there isn’t a whole lot of people with open minds and a genuine search and hunger for truth. The best thing to do is present the Word to them and pray God will give them a revelation of who He is. Hope this was of some help. Much love, God bless!

Respectfully, based on this logic then, we should all be:
      1. Riding young donkeys
      2. Get jobs as carpenters
      3. Fast 40 days in the wilderness at least once
      4. Find a literal cross and let soldiers literally nail us to it (after all, he did say "take up your cross")
      5. We should call our mothers "woman!"
I could go on, but hopefully the point is clear. Let's be real & not religious...
A lot of things in scripture are principles & don't need to be made in to literal practices.
Some things are relevant to the time & culture and therefore are informational in order bring greater light to the truths of God's word. This is one reason the Holy Spirit is given & needed...to help us apply scriptural principles/information wisely and avoid putting a yoke of bondage on one another. 👍

I'm not against churches taking part or not taking part...in fact I personally don't mind participating in it myself!! And I believe it is powerful when done with correct intent..God moves!
However if it is more a church tradition than an actual attempt to teach the principle of "serving/loving one another," then it is not of faith, and therefore is sin. Plain & simple.
"Footwashing" is just the current topic we are discussing, but there are several other things we do as a matter of church tradition and should not be misconstrued as thou shalt or thou shalt not.
If it isn't repent...be born again of water & the Spirit...pursue a life of holiness/submission to Jesus...love God and your neighbor; then we should be careful not to try to label it as essential!
The principle is essential, NOT the literal practice in this case.
