Is Jesus Standing at God's Right Hand? | Episode 65

  • Several New Testament passages describe Jesus as sitting or standing at God’s right hand. One of the most frequently referenced is Acts 7:55, where Stephen looks into heaven as he is being martyred and sees “the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.” Taken at face value, this and similar verses seem to indicate a distinction between Jesus and God. How can Jesus, the Son of God, and God the Father be one and the same if Stephen really saw Jesus standing at God’s right hand?
    Dr. David K. Bernard answers this question by reviewing the Bible's statements about the nature of God and the significance of the right hand in Scripture.

      how are they one? It says that husband and wife are one, yet I believe we agree that doesn't mean they are one person. They are ONE, in that Jesus did what God the Father wanted, they worked together. Read John chapters 14-16 and I believe scripture will answer what it means about "seen the Father" and being one.

      @@DannyLoydthe issue is about God that there is only one God. Don't compare it into husband and wife. But if you understand the passage that answer is particularly to the one who ask the questions and direct answer by telling him directly that I am that I am. That's also JESUS answered to parisses. And there also passage in the Bible that JESUS is the image of God. So that the sentence say I am and my Father are one and If you see me you see the father's also. Is prof answers that who is the father. That if you look into JESUS. You seen the Father in Him.

      @@DannyLoydIt's as the the apostle John said, God is a Spirit( John 4:24).
      " No man has seen him or can see him"( John 1:18). Why is that ? Because God ( Father) is an invisible Spirit. John also said," the Son of God hath declared him", he is literally saying that Jesus Christ made the invisible God visible.
      Jesus said," If you have seen me then you have seen the Father"(John 14:9).
      God is Spirit/ spirit,soul,and body.
      So God is one person with a duality of spirit. When a believer recieves the Holy Spirit the Word says that he recieves the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ. He doesn't recieve two Holy Spirits', but one. When the believer recieves the Holy Spirit the Spirit joins with his becoming one.
      God has always been visible to His creation. In the old testament He was refered to the Angel of the Lord and spoke to the prophets in the first person not as a messenger from God.
      When we stand before the throne of God we will see Jesus Christ sitting on the throne of God.

      @geraldhancock6208 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nahj1don706 Thank you for engaging in this critical discussion about interpreting Psalm 110:1. I want to clarify an essential aspect of the Hebrew text that impacts our understanding of this scripture, especially regarding the nature of God and Christ.
      The original Hebrew phrase in Psalm 110:1 is "YHWH says to my adoni," where "adoni" refers to a lord or master and is used throughout the Old Testament to describe humans and occasionally angels, but notably never God. This distinction is crucial because it underscores a fundamental aspect of monotheistic belief. There is only one God, YHWH, and He does not speak to Himself or another divine person within the Godhead.
      Understanding "Adoni"
      The word "adoni" (אדני) is used 195 times in the Hebrew Bible, and its usage provides consistent evidence of its application to non-divine figures. For example, Sarah refers to her husband Abraham as "adoni" in Genesis 18:12, demonstrating its usage in a clearly human context. Similarly, the word is used by servants to their masters, citizens to their kings, and other comparable human relationships. Therefore, interpreting "adoni" in Psalm 110:1 as referring to anyone other than a human figure introduces inconsistency in the scriptural text.
      In Psalm 110:1, "adoni" refers to the Messiah, a glorified and resurrected Jesus, who is distinctly human and occupies the role designated by God. This understanding is further supported by 1 Timothy 2:5, which states, "For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ [Messiah] Jesus." This verse aligns with Psalm 110:1 in distinguishing the roles of God and the Messiah, emphasizing the Messiah's humanity and mediatorial function.
      Translation Practices
      It’s important to note that the traditional Masoretic Text, the basis for most modern Old Testament translations, uses vowel markings to distinguish between divine and non-divine references. "adoni" is marked differently than "Adonai," a title used exclusively for God. The distinction in Psalm 110:1 should guide our translation and understanding, indicating that the verse does not refer to a divine dialogue within the Godhead but to God (YHWH) speaking to a human lord-historically understood as a prophetic reference to the Messiah.
      Theological Implications
      From a Biblical Unitarian perspective, the interpretation of Psalm 110:1 reinforces our understanding of God's unique and singular nature. There is no "second person" in the Godhead, as Trinitarian theology later developed. Instead, while highly exalted and given authority by God, the Messiah remains distinct from God. This understanding aligns with the broader scriptural narrative that emphasizes the oneness of God and Jesus' role as the Messiah-anointed and appointed by God but not divine in the Trinitarian sense.
      Conclusion
      To uphold scriptural integrity and consistency, it is essential to recognize and maintain the distinction between "YHWH" and "adoni" in Psalm 110:1. Misinterpretation or alteration of this distinction not only impacts doctrinal clarity but also affects our understanding of God's nature and His Messiah. I encourage all participants in this discussion to consider these points carefully, as they bear directly on our foundational beliefs about God's nature and His revelation to us through the Scriptures.

      When you look at Revelation 22:1-3, we see that there is ONLY a Throne for the Father and the Son. Even more, Mark 16:19 confirms the fact.
      It is not a metaphorical position of authority. If that be the case, why is Jesus Christ saying to be God Almighty in Revelation 22:12-16? Or why is Jesus being worshipped in Revelation 5:8-14 just as the Father is?
      Jesus is right at the middle of the Throne (Revelation 5:6). What is doing at the middle of Throne with the Father?
      That is why we have to study meticulously the scriptures to point out their wrongness.

      @ombandajeanpaul7117, @Joshua777 and @63Timotheus Revelation 3:21, Jesus said, “I . . . am set down with my Father in his throne.” If we interpret this statement to refer to two divine persons with two bodies, then two persons would be sitting in one throne, a direct contradiction of Revelation 4:2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.
      Clearly, this is not the intention of the verse. Rather, it expresses that the image of God i.e. Jesus! (Colossians 1:15-19; 2:9-10) has been exalted by the indwelling Spirit to the position of highest authority in the universe. God rules from heaven as the One, in the image of Jesus Christ.
      Jesus also promised in Revelation 3:21, “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne.” We must interpret this part of the verse as metaphorical, just as the rest of the verse, since a literal interpretation would place millions of believers sitting in the throne with Jesus-either beside Him or on Him. Instead, we must understand Jesus to mean that He will share His power and authority with believers, so that they will rule with Him.

      @tanner8922 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I hate that you have had an encounter like that. And being militant is not a productive way to discuss anything spiritually. Dealing with spiritual matters needs to be handled with humility and grace.
      I think sometimes there is a misconception of oneness believers being Jesus Only! As a oneness believer I have not been taught Jesus only per say, but Jesus everything! Col 2:9 In him dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Jesus only would be to reject the Father and his Spirit.
      The Lord has revealed him self to us as the father, as the son and as the holy ghost. And in him dwelt all of who God is.
      The Lord revealed him self to us through a begotten body.
      He reveals himself through his creation as the father of all
      He reveals himself within us as the comforter and our helper in the holy ghost.
      So when we pray in Jesus name we believe we are praying in the name of the Father. Col 1:12-20.
      When we baptize in "Jesus" name we are baptized in the name of the Father,Son and Holy ghost. Matt 28:19 is the instructions Peter followed in Acts 2:38 and was direct instruction from Jesus in Luke 24:47.
      So there is a lot there and it all ties into a God that revealed himself to us in all these ways as one God.
      I think there is a misunderstanding by trinitarians...and please understand in my text I say this humbly....there is a misunderstanding by the trinitarian doctrine of 3 separate persons all co existant and co eternal with each other. When in reality it is one God on the throne who has all power and dominion in his name!

    Ummm brethren, help me out here... Bernard said to not to take the passage literally, but metaphorically, no? Well... didn’t James and John ask to sit at the right and left of Jesus too in Mark 10:37? Yeah, if you read the Greek, “at the right hand” (lit εκ δεξιων) is the literally in same form in both passages. Obviously, James and John were not asking to be deity or anything like that... but the point is... if James or John would be on the right hand of Jesus, wouldn’t that still make them distinct and not the same person? If so, why wouldn’t Jesus (My Lord) be distinct to whom He is on the right of (The Lord) when the Greek syntax was identical?

    • @heramaha7452
      @heramaha7452 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't see how identical syntax would force the same interpretation in different passages. Context still plays a very important role.
      I'd like to know how do you answer the question briefly mentioned by brother Bernard: if Stephen saw 2 bodies/persons, why did he address only Jesus afterwards?
      (apologies for my non-native English).

    • @anthonycortes3554
      @anthonycortes3554 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heramaha7452 what? Because the Greek language never does that. The context could never alter compositional devices to the extent that you propose. If so, give me one example in the entire New Testament where you have the same grammatical syntax yielding two different meanings. I’ll give you 5 years to find one, I’ll be waiting.
      Umm, hmmm this might be a little shock, but Steven only addressing Jesus is not a problem for trinitarian thought, since one could converse with one divine person in the Godhead. Take this back to Acts 2:34 where it says, “The Lord SAID TO my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, until I make YOUR enemies a footstool beneath YOUR feet.”

    • @anthonycortes3554
      @anthonycortes3554 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heramaha7452 here is another challenge: John 1:18 says that CHRIST “is in the bosom of” THE FATHER. Luke 16:22 also records how LAZARUS “is in the bosom of” ABRAHAM.
      “is in the bosom of” in Greek is «εις τον κόλπου». So in one, it’s “Christ εις τον κόλπου the Father” and the other is “Lazarus εις τον κόλπου Abraham.”
      Lazarus and Abraham aren’t the same person. You need two people where one lies “in the bosom” of the other. Hence, Christ and the Father are two persons! Two persons, who are at the same time the one being of God. Hence, the Trinity is proven! Unless of course «εις τον κόλπου» is somehow different in both cases even though they are syntactically identical- something that UPCI claims happens all the time.

    • @azariosantos7820
      @azariosantos7820 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is there is One God. That is clear and echoed throughout Scripture.
      This One God has many ways in which He Manifest Himself or reveals Himself in the natural realm to His Creation through Relationship. We see Him revealed through a burning bush to get Moses’s attention and to have a very important dialogue with him for the instruction of freeing His people from Bondage in Egypt, We see Him revealed as an Angel in Human Form Wrestling with Jacob and changing Jacob’s name to Israel. We see Him reveal Himself in the form of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of Fire by night to lead the children of Israel through the desert to The Promised Land etc… I can go on. These are from my understanding referred to as Theophanies. Manifestations of God or God revealed to Creation through Relationship naturally in a physical form.
      So concerning Christianity. God is referred in what we see scripturally stated as The Godhead. Which I would argue is God in His entirety not just pertaining to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost/Spirit. But also the many Manifestations throughout Scripture. In regards to Christianity concerning The Godhead we reference God as our Father in Relationship/Creation, Son in Redemption, Holy Ghost/Spirit in Action or Active in and through a believer’s life.
      When we think of Son we shouldn’t think of a Demi-god like Zeus and Hercules. Someone that pre-existed because that is not scriptural. He (the Son) was begotten (John 1:14, etc.). He had a beginning and that beginning was in the incarnation. So when we think of Son. In reference to Son of God, it references God Manifested in flesh -1 Timothy 3:16. In reference to Son of Man, it refers to The incarnation of God in the flesh birthed of a woman (Mary) who is a descendant of Adam and also King David.
      When God was Manifested in The Flesh or The Express image of The Invisible God. He God still existed outside and was controlling all of Creation, Time, Universe, Eternity, At the Beginning and At The End, Filling all Time and Space in between while He was walking the earth fulfilling His Will through His Ministry and still is doing that through us as Spirit filled believers/ Body of Christ. We have His One and only Holy Spirit. There is always reference to God being the Holy One I can’t find Holy Two or Three in there. Scripture interprets Scripture.

  • @obedyeboah6773
    @obedyeboah6773 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I don’t care if the Right Hand of God as used in this passage in Acts is used metaphorically or literal. But one thing remains clear throughout Scripture from the very beginning. Genesis 1:26 reads “And God said, Let us make man in our image…” This statement alone provides evidence of more than a single person in communion/communication. The Hebrew root is “Elohim” -the plural form of the word ‘God’ as in ‘Gods’.. although there are plenty of its usage elsewhere in Scripture where it is used in the singular person’s perspective.
    Also, if Christ, the Son of God is the same Eternal Father, who for a period in history was miraculously conceived and begotten as the Son of God and later Outpoured Himself on the 120 disciples on the Pentecost Day, then I humbly request an explanation of Dr. Bernard how this Self-Same Jesus who has exited His Father-figure and begotten Himself miraculously, could still speak from Heaven whiles he was still embodied on earth in the person of Christ as “ This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” as Scripture tells us in Matthew 3:17? Did Christ leave His body for a moment, go back to Heaven and speak to the hearing of all at the River Jordan, descended spiritually as a Dove on Christ as well? Please let us not categorize any plain statements that the Bible presents in any historical event as metaphorical unless the Bible clearly depicts it as metaphorical or proverbial. The Bible clearly teaches the Unity of the 3 Persons of the Godhead in 1 John 5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one”

      Those that hold the position of the Trinity very simply see the distinction and acknowledge it at least but unfortunately still come to a faulty conclusion. The job of being “God” was already filled by JEHOVAH when Jesus showed up. Besides he was formed in the womb of Mary by Jehovah…

Concerning this “right hand” where Jesus sits, you’ll note that it says in Acts 2:34, “The Lord SAID TO my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand until I make YOUR enemies a footstool beneath YOUR feet.” There’s a dialogue that takes places between Jesus and to the Father who He is at the right of.
      This makes perfect sense with John 17:5, where Christ told the Father, “glorify Me with the glory I had WITH You.” The WITH in caps comes from the Greek word “para,” which is literally translated at “besides.” The usage of “para” also debunks Bernard’s views on John 17:5... how the “human-side” of Jesus was merely in communion with the “divine-side” of Him. The humanity of Jesus was never literally “beside” the Father.
      So yes, Acts 2:34 states that Jesus sits to the right of One who speak to Him... and we know that’s the state that John 17:5 pointed to... how Jesus would have glory BESIDE the Father.

      @@shaunbutler238 Think hard about verse 13 and its implications. Also I'd recommend the Bible Project's video on the title "Son of Man," to see how Jesus uses the phrase for himself and what it meant to his audience.

    • @KevinDay
      @KevinDay ปีที่แล้ว

      @T D Thank you immensely for taking the time to actually read the passage and respond!
      For sure the phrase, "son of man" has various uses throughout the whole Bible. For a long time I insisted that when applied to Christ it was referring to his human nature only. It certainly is not calling Ezekiel a divine figure, but rather demeaning him as merely a human.
      However, this video is about the concept of Jesus being "at the right hand of God." There is no "right hand" language in Daniel 7, but in Matthew 26:64, Jesus combines clear references to Daniel 7:13 and Psalm 110:1 to talk about himself. And Stephen in Acts 7:56 combines the title "Son of Man" again with a reference to the right hand language of Psalm 110. These are the references we need to really wrestle with and try to understand and not just dismiss too quickly.
      First of all, if you get nothing else out of this conversation, please recognize that absolutely *NO* Trinitarian would *ever* say that the Father and Son are "physically" separate. They would never say they are separate beings, separate gods, or anything dividing God's essence in any way shape or form. When being careful, they won't even say they are "separate persons," although it does bother me how often they slip into that language instead of using the more accurate term, "distinct persons." I understand how difficult it is to understand the difference, but if you misrepresent the other side so grossly, you give them cause to dismiss you as schismatic and uninformed.
      Now, regarding the interpretation Daniel received, it certainly does indicate that the people will possess the kingdom in some sense, just as Jesus granted his disciples authority to cast out demons, etc. Jesus came as a man to be the representative for all men, and to redeem humanity so that by the righteousness of Christ, humans may become the imagers of God that they were always intended to be. But in verse 14, it says that the Son of Man "was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, and nations, and languages *should serve him."* The people are going to serve the people? And how can he "give" this kingdom to himself?
      What I'm saying is that Jesus *is* mentioned in Daniel 7, starting at verse 13. You can't just look at verse 9 and act like Jesus not being mentioned there means he isn't mentioned at all in the passage. Remember there were no verse or chapter numbers originally. They were added relatively recently in history for convenience when referencing passages.
      In verse 13, the Son of man "came *to* the Ancient of Days, and was presented *before* him." These prepositions are what distinguish the persons. Not some physical division between them, but their capability of being *related* to one another. In fact, I still think the term "person" carries too much baggage and has changed meaning in modern English, so I have come to prefer calling the Father, Son, and Spirit distinct "selves" of God. Each can talk about himself, and about the other, and yet they are the same self-existent God.
      I do no think Daniel 7 on its own is enough to disprove Oneness theology by any means. I believed it for years after recognizing these challenges. But I don't like that Bro. Bernard is presenting himself as having figured out what "at the right hand" means without even beginning to touch on the Old Testament passages that are being referenced by this phrase.

    • @KevinDay
      @KevinDay ปีที่แล้ว

      @T D Did I appeal to the video in my response? No, I just quoted Scripture. I only mentioned the video in an earlier response as a helpful starting point for anyone who prefers video content over text.
      I recommend letting Jesus's claims about himself stand as-is and not denying them. He says "You will see the Son of man *coming with the clouds."* That could not be a clearer reference to Daniel 7:13.
      Speaking of just believing what's written, did Stephen say he saw "a glory cloud and Jesus coming out of the cloud"? No, he said he saw the Son of Man *seated at the right hand of God.* Bro. Bernard has to come up with a different vision to explain away what he doesn't want to be true.

    • @KevinDay
      @KevinDay ปีที่แล้ว

      @T D Funny you would complain about having to read other verses to understand a passage when the Oneness movement was founded on cross referencing Matthew 28:19 with Acts 2:38.
      Jesus sees himself as the fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy. It is extremely dangerous to deny what Jesus wants you to know about him.

      If you believe that the Lord Jesus is God because of the title "God the Son", then you are not following the Scriptures. What is written is that "Jesus is the SON OF GOD", not God the Son. The title God the Son originated from Tertullian and the early Church Fathers. Tertullian and the early Church fathers were of the Catholic lineage. Also, if you believe in their "God the Son" doctrine, then you SHOULD also believe their Theotokos doctrine (Mary is the Mother of God) since the Theotokos doctrine they formulated alongside with the Trinity doctrine to SECURE their false belief of God the Son doctrine.

    Of course Stephen didn't see Jesus standing at the literal right hand of God, he saw the glory of God AND he saw Jesus standing at the place of honor. How can you use the example of someone saying, this is my right hand man, which is someone other than the person saying it, by using this to explain Jesus doesn’t work. Is Jesus his own right hand man?
    Acts 7:55 also points to Psalm 110:1 "The Lord says to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool." Funny enough Jesus himself quotes this passage in reference to himself in Matthew 26:63-64 "But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus said to him , You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven."
    Not only does Jesus say hes the person God was talking to in Psalm 110:1 he also includes Daniel 7 and the prophecy of the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man.
    Daniel 7:13-14 "I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed."

    Nowhere in the book of Acts did any Apostle preach Jesus is God like oneness does. They preached Jesus as the Son of God like in Acts 9:20.
    Acts 4:27 and v30 thy holy child Jesus is how they were praying and God honored it. You oneness know good and well you would not stand up and pray those words because your denomination does agree with scripture. I know. I was in your movement for yrs. Now im One God, not Oneness.
    The word "oneness "is not even in the bible. When God spoke from heaven saying this is my beloved son, he did not lie. Jesus did not throw his voice in the air tricking the people making them believe someone else spoke. The disciples did not say, we saw your lips move Jesus, you cant fool us. Jesus is God but he is not his own father like oneness dreams up. Nobody, i repeat Nobody has God figured out, or ever will, period. Jesus was the Son of God then, just as he is in heaven the Son of God.
    His own words in Rev 2:18 proves this. Look at John 20:17 here is Jesus after the resurrection saying he has a Father and a God. Wake up oneness dumbness, wake up. I finally did. I tried for years to deny all the scripture that didn't agree with our denomination also, cause that's what is taught.

    Too bad, Pastor. When I look at the passage, your explanation doesn't work:
    ‭Acts 7:54-56 ESV‬
    [54] Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. [55] But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. [56] And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
    IF "right hand of God" means the power/glory of God (Jesus as God), verse 55 would be problematic ("...saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God"). NOTICE IT?
    Stephen saw the glory of God AND Jesus...
    The irony is, the three persons of the Trinity are mentioned in the three verses 😅😂.
    Pastor asks, respectfully responding, if it means Jesus is physically standing besides God, where is the third person of the Trinity? Well, the exact passage he is exponding answers him.
    THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ON EARTH WITH STEPHEN AND ALL THE BELIEVERS.
    That's why Trinity works and oneness doesn't. God is in belivers yet He is in heaven. How does that work?
    ALSO
    Stephen's use of the title "Son of Man" is telegraphing to Daniel 7. Pastor Bernard's interpretation of Daniel 7 is incorrect IN THIS VIDEO. The Son of Man and the Ancient of Days are two separate beings in Daniel 7.
    Just read:
    ‭Daniel 7:13 ESV‬
    [13] “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
    See it? The Son of man came of the Ancient of Days.
    With that said, using the right hand metaphor ELSEWHERE IN SCRIPTURE as figurative (though true) to dismiss the notion that Stephen saw Jesus standing beside God the Father is quite dishonest to the text, based on the Acts 7 passage and Daniel 7.

  • @Brandon-bm

    Stephen's use of the title "Son Of Man" recalls Daniel 7. In Dan 7, there are two separate entities, not one. Hence, the interpretation of Acts 7 as well.
