One method for getting unstuck is to tie the halyard to the dingy and pull as hard as you can 90 degrees to port or starboard. As the mast is pulled over, the keel will lift on the opposite side. Put your engine in reverse and back out.

We accidentally dried out on soft mud in a falling tide and were lucky enough that the wind direction meant we could haul up the main, which had the same effect as the method you are suggesting James....it heeled us over and away we went. Scary stuff. Congratulations on getting free and yay for kedge anchors.

Surely you know the old adage: Either you've run aground, haven't yet or are just lying about it. It's not a case of "if" but "when".
We have done something similar as Mr. Early. We attached the main halyard to the end of the boom for extra support. We then swung the boom out to the low side until it nearly touch the water. Using a lifting harness we attached the dingy to the boom and then filled it with water. As the tide came in the massive weight of the dingy kept the boat heeled over and we kedge out backwards. Once in deep water we pulled the boom in and pulled the plug on the dingy to let the water out. It took us about 3 hours and 15 beers, but it worked perfectly.

Sailing for over 50 years, and hanging around with sailors all that time, I have encountered three kinds of sailors. There are people who have run aground and folks who are soon to run aground. Then there are people like me. People who have run aground more times than I can remember and I just lie and claim I have only run aground twice! You have just graduated from apprentice cruiser to experienced cruiser!

So spot on. Semi truck owner operator the high hook is same bone head moves we all do…. Those that never never leave the slip or truck stop.
There are 2 groups of boaters, those that have grounded their boat and those that haven't grounded their boat yet.
My wifes first trip on a boat ever, I grounded on the way out. we spent the night sideways in the v berth

next time...put the main halyard on the end of the boom and hang the dink to heel you over... I have helped many sailboats with my 9 ft whaler.. pull on the halyard out to the side to heel it while you power of using your main engine... don't try to pull it off just with the dink

Don’t use the boom but the mast with a halyard as you may bent your boom.
@@chrysM34 good advise. I would have used the boom. You can even do it so that you take a halyard and run the dinghy with it to pull the mast to the side. I think from this grounding there is no damage to the boat.
@@topc9858 well it’s easy to write this while seated in my sofa. Thinking about this twice I would be slightly less … affirmative. See : If it’s a matter of life, rescuing the boat, I think the boom isn’t a big deal if it works and provides an exit. It’s easy to replace if broken. Not the hull…
@@chrysM34 agree on that. I have used the boom and dinghy to heel a boat one time. It is definetly not as simple as one can think. The best way to do It is to take a halyard and attach It to boom with a roller and then attach that line to the dinghy filled with water then you can start to lift the dinghy with a winch. You can get some heel to the boat but not like 30 degr level.. maby 10 - 15 degrees.
Don't pull the master as some suggested chain plates won't take it . I've transport many beneteaus and jeanneaus
Not the best of boats to ground out . Seriously check for cracking around the keel box
Wow .. that was close I wonder if it might be prudent to trade in the old captain for a newer younger model.....perhaps if you are lucky you could get a few quid for the old one......£2.50 ...
Fortunately, your obvious stress is unwarranted. There would be very few keelboat sailors who haven't run aground at some time or other, and while it is embarrassing, it's all part of the learning curve. Being a sandy bottom, you couldn't have picked a better spot to ground her. Keeping the rudder clear was the right thing to do. One thing you possibly could have done, is get as much weight as possible on the end of the boom & swung it out & heeled the boat in its early grounding stages. You could also have done this with your dinghy & halyard from the top of the mast. Place the dinghy out to the side of the lean & give it some throttle & pull the mast over. This would have decreased the draft marginally & allowed you to reverse off... Maybe..!! Otherwise, you were in for a long wait. Next time you get the chance, check your keel joints & mountings & put the whole thing down to experience.
You’re lucky the weather is calm It’s something to tell the grandkids with a bit of exaggeration 😂😂
Smart move on the anchor placement. Only other recommendations would be pump grey water and bilges to ensure dry. You could also off load any water of fuel can to your dingy

Your not the first to run aground, and I doubt that you will be the last. The only thing to do is hold your head up in shame and smile. Need to invest in forward looking sonar lol.

Well if you were going to run aground you did it in the best possible spot. If nothing else it's a good time to clean and inspect the hull. I haven't run my small sailboats aground yet, but I sure as heck cause a calamity when I ran a big pontoon boat aground hard a fast. Middle of winter and solo. I had to jump in lift and push, thought I was going to die of hypothermia before I got her big butt in deeper water.

Hah! First time run aground?? First time I have seen Nat Flustered ? (not a pretty sight) but James stuck to the problem like shi... I only went aground once last year. lucky I had another hour of tide rising but had a couple of cows come to have a laugh?? but it is an almost SINKING feeling? xx

Def! That was our biggest mistake…doing it on a dropping tide! Ahh! And a king tide at that!
A fantastic opportunity to give the bottom a good scrub. Like wetsuits, there are two kinds of sailors; those who have struck ground, and those who lie about it. We have the older sister to your oceanis, a 423, and a big part of why we picked it is how strong the composite rudder shaft is and how well supported the rudder tube is where it comes through the hull. Minor groundings happen. It’s never useful, then or later, to panic, blame anyone, (including yourself) or yell. Just think, “where is the deep water and how can I reduce my draft enough to get there?” Then, if all else fails, what goes down must come up again, in time.

Besides the dinghy to mast tip trick. When caught early and you act fast. Swing the boom out send all your crew out on the end of the boom to roll the boat. Heavy cruiser this option might be needed in addition to the dinghy to mast tip to get the boat pulled over and keel up off the bottom. The region your cruising is popular with shallow draft boats for a reason unfortunately. Just sitting on the bottom your ok. But if your sailing and hit hard especially with boats built with keels bolted thru the hull skin between structural stringers 🤦♂️ (Don’t get me started) you need to really inspect for hull damage and forever watch for any hint at delaminating indicators etc. Lots of terrible keel loss stories out there all with very obvious indications of issues before failing. You guys are doing great have a fun adventure!!

You didn't give the hull & Keel a scrub ?? . A trick iv used > Fill the dingy with water , Pull the boom out & use a pully to lean the boat over , Lifts the keel a few inch's up & slide off . Theres those that have run aground & those that are waiting to . Fair winds .

I have never been around unless it was purposely done. I have no idea how many tows I have done over 50+years. One we had to pump out while I held upright till she floated. It was a cold rainy day and windy and I used a lot of fuel that day but the grounder floated and I was glad for all the help that came out. Especially for all the muscles from the boating community.

we went aground in that same exact spot with our 5' draft. we had to wait for high tide after wearing out 3 dinghies trying to push and pull it. we actually did the same thing with the anchor and it pulled us off. in the dark btw. grrr

There is only one word to describe a sail boat owner who would actually try and make us believe they've never beached their boat a LIAR. *NEXT TIME "RELAX" & "THINK CRITICALLY"*
*Look ... Your keel is grounded on a "sandbar" ... Not a "coral reef". It's not the end of the world and nothing to panic about because there's no damage to your boat yet.*
(Let the tide go out and there might be a lot of damage)
*It's really simple at this stage of the video .... You take a single line and you tie it to the bow cleat and you tie that same line to the stern cleat .... Didn't you tie a bridal line or tow line in the middle and give it enough room so that line can slip a little bit on the line that's tied to the bow cleat and the stern cleat. Then you take your tender, or your dinghy, and while you still have high water, pull your yacht sideways into deep water.*
*It's not difficult & it's not ticket science .. it's simple seamanship.*
*Your yacht will likely lean a little sideways as the keel drags the sandbar ... Then the mat will suddenly face skywards again & your keel will point at the ocean floor. .... Nothing to be scared of at this point in the video.*
_I watch the rest of the video and see what you did later and what mistakes you made and what you did correct but I'm guessing you did a lot more wrong than you did right because you panicked._
*Hurricane Allen .... We had a 38 ft Hanss Christian canoe stern sailboat .... I charted a course to try to get us out and away from the hurricane and my (first) ex-wife decided that she knew more than I did about ocean currents and how the boat ran ..... So when she argued with me about the course I was taking, I looked at her and said, "ok Skipper. What do you want me to do?"*
_yep .... Gave her full control of the yacht._
*Guess what happened next? She overpowered the mast & when the Force 5 hurricane hit us .... She turned us completely upside down. (Kill was pointed towards the sky in the mass was pointed to the bottom of the ocean.)*
*I looked at her ass she's "panicked" and screaming her head off because she didn't know what to do and she thought we were all going to drown and the boat was going to sink ... And I looked your deadly eye and I said, "This f-cking boat ain't gonna sink. We're going to take on a lot of water but we're not going to sink. Stop screaming and tell me what you want me to do next."*
*Guess what? She didn't know. .... So NOW she wants to give control of the vessel back to me. .... I looked at her and I said "gee now that you got us upside down thanks a lot" ... WTF?!"*
*AT THAT POINT IT WAS PRETTY SIMPLE .... We had some lines stowed in the sale locker in the bow of the boat and I went and got one. I tied it around my waist and told her "hang on to this end and if I'm not back in one and a half minutes start pulling on that as hard as you can." (I knew I could hold my breath for 2 minutes at least) then I swam out to cockpit hatchway and luft the sails .... Then I swam back into the cabin and told her "When she comes upright .... It's gonna be fast & it's gonna be violent. Just crawl along the bulkheads in the ceiling until to both stabilizers and everything is now on the ceiling that should be on the deck goes back to the deck ... Just find a place to sit will engage to build pumps and everything will be fine"*
*You know what?*
*When her full kill cut gravity and she came up right .... It was so drastic that I wasn't sure I was going to be able to crawl along the ceilings in the bulkheads to get back on the deck before she came back up. .... Once that killed got gravity ... It was a couple seconds before that mast was pointed back at the sky.*
*I'm just saying ... Worst things have happened out at Sea then putting your keel on a sandbar. Panic is your worst enemy. Your own head is your worst enemy. Even if you're taking on water, just relax and think about the next step. Panic creates chaos and chaos creates disaster. Don't create disaster.*
*Even if your yacht sinks .... As long as every crew member is accounted for .... It's not the end of the world because you still have the ability to survive .... if you don't create chaos which creates disasters.*
_I'm going to leave that there with my little story as a comparison to what you went through and what you should have done initially in my view almost 2 minutes into the video. But your wife saying she panicked .... Initially sent me into that memory of our experience which was much worse than yours._
_so I'm going to leave this here and everybody can hate mail me if they want to but from this point, looking at the keel on The Sandbar in your video .... You really weren't that stuck and I'm going to take a SWAG here (Swinging Wild Ass Guess) because I was not on board with you at the time .... But my SWAG tells me by experience and looking at the video footage up until this point, did your dingy could have pulled that yacht sideways and got it off that sound bar before the water level got lower._
(I might be wrong and I've been wrong before. Not the end of the world to be wrong. Just saying at this point in the video those are my observations. Take them or leave them or tell me to shut up and quit commenting but that's my observations and experience.)

If the boat had completely heeled over onto it's side and grounded there are procedures that I suggest you also look up if they are not familiar to you. Sand is the best case, as it will do little damage, but you would need to close thruhulls, secure everything, anchor towards incoming tide, remove as much weight as possible, anything that won't affect survival, (bring the beer as you will need something to do anyway), place cushions fenders whatever to protect your hull etc. Everyone runs aground, and it becomes more of a technical challenge than terrifying when armed with knowledge!
These are the times you support each other. There is no need for negativity towards your crew (partner) or self..wait it out as you did and chill. If there is one thing I would do in this case it would be the good old practice of "Careening"..to clean your exposed hull but it appears that Zephyr is quite free of barnacles. Always great to see your vids.

Why did you set the stern anchor to pull the rudder into the sand? Weight on the bow is the traditional approach to groundings...

Maybe you should buy a depth sounder for the yacht a rope and a sinker doesn’t work

Yes they did! Legends! We though we wouldn’t get off till much much later in the night! But we came off way earlier than expected! They came to check on us a couple of times though! Legends! The boating community is just amazing!
Oh dear, but great work to keep the rudder and so rudder stock relieved, but it was all very gentle and to stress of the hull massively relieved. My only thought would be a large weight swung out from the masthead to see if you can could can’t the keel over off the bottom, but a horrible situation with your home on the rocks, or at least the sand

I live on the Georgia Coast (USA) with lots of tidel rivers and barier islands... our saying is... "It's not if but when you will get stuck on a sand bar".
I remember when Justin who had lived all his life in the area came back to the docks with his wife and teenage triplet girls and nobody was talking...Stuck on a sandbar for 8 hrs and very sun burned.
Everyone keeps telling us it’s always a matter of “when”. So we’ve takin this as a learning experience for sure. 👍

Hahaha. Sorry, I had to laugh through this episode. I am subscribed to just about every other youtube sailing channel and every single one of them has been stuck on sand, some on reef. Just a thought for next time. If you are not heading into a low tide and you have someone else there in a dinghy, then pull a halyard (I think that's the one they used) over the side of the boat and give it to the guy in the dingy to pull your mast way over so you are on a big lean. Then at the same time reverse. This on many occasions will free the keel. SV Delos did this also. Their boat is a lot heavier than yours and the keel is huge, but they got off by pulling the boat over and I've seen others do the same thing. Worth keeping in mind 'the next time you ground yourselves,' which you will. Good job thought and now you can enjoy the new destination.

You should have titled your video different if you don't have any holes in your boat from running a ground then you're fine but you make it sound so drastic with all the drama I don't understand why people do that all you have to do is wait it out and it will float again everybody panicked for nothing
It was a fairly intense event for us. As liveaboards, it’s the potential to lose or severely damage your home. And until it floats again you can’t be sure of the outcome. But we have certainly learned from the experience.

If aground on a soft bottom, particular on a small sand:
(i) put the anchor out with the dingy in the direction of deeper water;
(ii) use the winches to turn the boat side on to the direction of the deeper water;
(iii) attach the anchor rode to a halyard from the top of the mast; and
(iv) use the winches to pull on the halyard attached to the anchor line to pull heal the boat over until the keel is free - repeat until you are off.

We got stuck almost the same place in February 2019 on our 44' Hylas. Came thru the cut between White and Devils Cay but got on top of some shoals between saddle back cay and Devis Cay.
