I point out some of the things you may want to be aware of when creating your own bridal makeup contract and why it is so important to have one if you are serious about working in the bridal makeup industry.

    Another thing i found super important to include is the liabilities in which artist isnt responsible for allergic reactions to products. Client should definitely tell of possible reactions to ingredients in makeup. My friend whos also is a makeup artist included the section where client is obligated to tell if there are possible sicknesses like conjunctivitis, herpes and etc. i found that to be so important because if clients keep quiet about that, my whole kit will be infected which means i would need to replace everything

      Definitely! As far as sanitation of your kit goes - just assume everyone has something that can spread, if you keep this in mind your hygiene will be 👌🏻

I probably won't share my own contract only because it is really important to make sure what you are using what works for you and learning to do a contract is really helpful to understand exactly what is in it and how they are structured!

    Hello is it weird to add to your contract a " no touch " rule I really have a pet peeve of people touching my things especially while I'm doing a clients face I know they can't help it but I really hate that. I'm wondering if that sounds weird

      I have never seen that before but if you are comfortable enforcing it, you can do whatever you want. I don't know how positive that would be for client relations however, many people may take that the wrong way.

    Hi Angie. No one ever talks about budgeting as freelance makeup artists, like how much to set aside for replenishment, education, taxes, travel, work clothing, etc. Would you please do a video on how to budget so we can stay as financially healthy as possible?? Much needed here

      Hey! I won’t be speaking on this topic because tax regulations are so different depending on where you live as well as rates. People in different markets can make vastly different amounts. Also no two careers in this industry will be the same - there is nothing I can speak on that would apply to everyone watching. Save as much as possible is my advice.

      For other non bridal bookings there generally aren't contracts. For bridal contracts you should state that the contract guarantees services for the people listed on the contract and you also want to state a price (if time allows) for anyone else that would like their makeup done that day. If they are not on the contract they are not guaranteed services - this will help you avoid that.

    lucky you! In Italy we can not use a similar contract, since the figure of make up artist does not exist unless it works for the show, in theory we would not be able to make up for the private. It's really boring as a situation. In theory, you can only do it if you're an aestheticist or a hairdresser, but hardly the customers are satisfied. It looks crazy but it is so!

    Thank you so much for all your thorough and informative videos! I have been binge-watching you the past few weeks, I´m doing my first bridal makeup tomorrow and you´ve been such a great help with this and your other videos :) (Also, unrelated to this spesific video, I was just wondering if for disinfecting eyeshadows and powders, does it have to be 70% alcohol or can it be more? The ones I have at home right now are 96%? Just wanted to check the reason why ;) )

      96% alcohol doesn't sanitize effectively as there is not enough time to penetrate through the protein cells therefore 70% is used for sanitation. You should keep 96 or 99% for cleaning or for activating alcohol based products and 70 to sanitize brushes and tools, pencils,..
      Regarding eyeshadows and powder products, Powder products (pressed or loose) do not provide an environment that supports the growth of bacteria - bacteria requires moisture and heat to propagate.
      Every time you spray your pressed powder products with alcohol or any other disinfectant, you compromise the formula and cannot hold the manufacturer responsible for changes in texture or performance.
      But I guess there is no 100 % right way to follow, everybody has different needs and practice. I make sure my brushes are sanitized and I don't double dip neither into powders. Wipe down the brush with 70% alcohol before you want to reuse

      Thank you so much, that makes sense regarding the speed of evaporation :) I haven't ever disinfected powders actually, I just feel like I every now and then I will hear makeupartists talk about disinfecting powder products with an alcohol solution as well as other tools and products. Off to buy 70% then ;)

      You are welcome :) if you would like to know more about sanitation, find group IN MY KIT on facebook and there is search bar on side and look it up and there is tons of comments and discussion on it.( and many other great topics ! ) But basically, if you keep your brushes and tools sanitized and of course makeup packaging itself you should be fine. If someone has eye infection you should not apply any makeup on them or separate products that you can discard afterwards. I wouldn't risk that.

      Great! I'll check it out, always nice to get a few second opinions, but yeah, of course anything liquid/cream always gets taken out with a spatula and brushes are always sanitized. Completely agree on the eyeinfection situation, been there with a client and had to spend a lot of extra time keeping everything exclusively for her separate from absolutely everything else, same with coldsores and the likes. Thank you for all your tips!

    When should the contract be signed? When they book you? I am completely new to the MUA world but your videos are literally the best! SO INFORMATIVE!

      I usually have my clients sign the contact after trial if they would like to book me. Everything is done digitally so it’s not something that needs to be done in person.

I'm having a hard time finding a Canadian beauty supplier for applicators (mascara/lip wands, sponges, puffs, cotton pads, 3ml containers) etc. I live in Calgary. Do you have any recommendations? I was looking at Qosmedix.. but the shipping to Canada was ridiculous...Also do you have any tips on how to get a pro discount approval even if you don't have professional school experience? PS! The shipping for Qosmedix is getting up there for sure - I order very large quantities when I ship from there. Also check out Amazon for disposables and some viewers have mentioned Ali Express for mascara wands and things too. I'll keep everyone posted if I find anything like this at a good price online!!

    And the event the make up artist have to cancel for whatever reason the day up the brides wedding even though I’m not liable because things may happen would you recommend a full refund to the bride?

      I have a clause in my own contract that I will provide a suitable replacement (so they aren’t left stranded) and if they don’t want that option then a full refund is provided.

    Hi Angie! Question for ya - I live in a rural area in which I am close enough to the capital city that I can book clients who live in the city (Winnipeg!). On top of your regular rates, do you account for travel time and costs? An average trip to and from Winnipeg in my vehicle would cost approximately $25. If so, do you charge the entire amount it costs you to reach them and back? How do you disclose this extra charge in your contracts (without sounding like you want to take all of their money!)? Any suggestions? Also, the content you provide to us in your videos is top notch! I am working on my certification as we speak, and it's great to add the information you share with us on to what I've already learned over there. Thank you!!

      Hi Lindsay! Great question. I just add a line with a flat rate for travel costs. When you are pricing for travel you have to cover all your costs for your trip there and back. Some MUA's calculate mileage based on cost per km, some do it based on time (or distance and time) so it is totally up to you. You can also check out the automobile allowance rates from the Canada Revenue Agency to help get an idea of pricing.

      Hi! Your earning potential is very dependant on a number of things - where you live, the type of makeup you do, whether or not you are unionized etc. If you are just starting out you will need a second source of income that is reliable - it takes 3-5 years to start earning any money and it will take you even longer to start earning decent money to a point where you will be able to support yourself. I am not unionized and am supported fully be freelancing. I make a decent income but I also live in an extremely expensive city and don't really have a lot of expendable income to play around with.

    Hi Angie! If there is a job in which you don't have a formal contract for or have an informal contract in email form, do you have a waver the individual signs before you start applying makeup saying you are not liable for allergic reactions? Just wondering if you are doing a trial or prom or just someone's makeup in general and they have a reaction and blame you. Thank you!

      Good question! I start every application by asking the client if they have any allergies and for me that has been the best way to make sure I am in the clear. Generally speaking if someone is sensitive they are usually paranoid and will tell you everything they are allergic too right of the top so you can work accordingly. Surprise allergies are not very common - reactions that happen 2-3 days after a makeup application are something that would be hard to trace back to the makeup artist. Also I always check in with my clients throughout the application to make sure there is no discomfort. If you keep the lines of communication open and ask your clients about their allergies you are good to go!

    Do you have a separate trial contract from the bridal contract? I have several brides not wanting to do a trial and just book a wedding contract.

      This is such a good question! I will elaborate on this in the Q&A Video for sure but no contract for the trial usually for me - in your bridal contract if they don't want a trial I would really push for a larger non refundable deposit.

    Dear Angie, Thanks so much for all of your info!! This is beyond helpful, I have a few questions. I have a bridal contract, but I am looking to create a professional invoice to send them as well. When do you send this to your brides? After they have signed the contract...? Also, what do you put on there bc almost all of my brides are changing things up to the deadline I have given them so I feel like what I quote them price wise is always changing. Do you send them a quote and invoice to just mend them together?

      I send my contract and invoice at the same time, the program that I use to do this (Dubsado) automatically updates both when any changes are made.

    Is a contract required to do makeup? Just curious. Do you use a contract for other appointments besides brides & weddings?

      Great question! Generally no, if you are freelancing you want to have any important information in the email correspondence with your client including rates, overtime, travel expenses etc. that way at least you have something in writing.

      What about freelancing regular glam makeup. For example the client wants her makeup done for her birthday. Is a waiver form where it asks about allergies and says the artist is not to be held liable for any allergic reactions to the products used good enough for regular makeup (not a bridal party).

      That is up to you! You will have to decide what is fair to your contractors.

      This question is going to be really helpful for my subs and viewers - thank you for asking! Normally there is no formal contract for other freelance jobs but there are things you will want to have in an email that you will confirm with your client: Rate, number of hours on set, overtime, travel, meals. I will elaborate on this in a Q&A for sure!

      If you approach a law firm there will usually be someone there that deals with corporate law or contracts specifically. If not there - they would be able to refer you.

      Where I live you need to have a registered business if you are earning over a certain amount annually (to pay tax) but other than that there is no licensing for makeup artists here, but I am really not sure about what happens in other parts of the world. Sorry I can't be of more help to you with this!

      Absolutely no cheques for me! I use interac-e transfer or Square where they can pay credit or debit on the spot.

      Business cards are definitely not as popular as they used to be. The only time I've handed mine out in the last year is in my bridal touch up kits. Most people now just ask for my instagram to be honest! You can include whatever information you are comfortable with and hand them out when you think the time is appropriate.

      I keep business cards and use them as note cards (writing on the back) for clients/potential clients. My cell phone has a clear case and I keep a neatly trimmed biz card in the back, so when people want my info, they can take a photo of it (and if I lose my phone, there is info for someone to contact me). I also keep cards in my MUA kit, my suitcases, etc.
      The info should be concise and font that is easy to read:
      Name; profession described (i.e.--Makeup Artist); location (the area you service, i.e.--Orange County, CA); tel #; email address; website address; instagram.

      Outside of weddings I have my booking policies and procedures in the signature of my email and I also input this into my email communication with my clients which they have to agree to so that acts as the contract for me.

      Definitely! Some people just put all of this as a blurb underneath the signature in their email as well.

      Never ever feel awkward about being paid to do your job. I accept payment at any time really - both before and after.

      I don't remember what I was using at this point with this video, but now I use a Canon 80D Camera with a kit lens and a Rode Videomic Pro

      That question does not have a simple answer! It's totally up to you, how you learn, how affordable classes are, who is teaching those classes etc. You have to research all of the options and do what makes the most sense for you.

      There is no such thing in our small Balkan country. We work on the principle of oral arrangements and we are paid by hand. (I hope the phrase is the same and the translator does not make a mistake, because "oral" does not sound good to me.) Because no one works with contracts clients refuse them. I'm trying to get my clients to fill in at least a questionnaire to check if they have allergies and to sign up.
