- The Microsoft Lumia 950XL is a Windows phone from 2015 which was Microsoft's last ditch attempt at reviving the dying Windows Phone OS alongside the Lumia 950 and Lumia 650 as well! Sadly, due to its horrible design flaws and cheaper comparative build quality, topped off with a lack of apps on the Windows phone store and many more..caused the Lumia 950 and and Lumia 950XL to fail. Its also considered as a collectors item at this age and since I am phone collector with a massive phone collection, having this phone was a must.
Like promised, this is the Using the Lumia 950XL in 2021 or Lumia 950XL 2021 video that I said I will be doing. This also doubles as Using Windows Phone 10 in 2021 or Windows Phone in 2021 as well! As I go in detail with the Windows OS and the situation with the Microsoft Store and everything needed to know about Windows Apps in 2021.
Iv done a video comparing the iPhone 12 Pro Max VS Lumia 950XL in a head to head camera comparison which you can find on my channel.
This video also counts as a Lumia 950XL Review and Lumia 950XL Camera test as I have included a great selection of photos and video in the Lumia 950XL Camera Samples section of this video!
It ain't no iPhone 12 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, Motorola Edge S or OnePlus 8T but its definitely an interesting phone in its own league. And in this video lets see how well the Microsoft Lumia 950XL holds up here in 2021, how Windows Phone is in 2021 and whether you should buy a Lumia 950XL in 2021?

It is absolutely PERFECT as daily driver in 2021. No Apps: its a godsend! The basic app selection is polished, it runs Telegram, and Skype so messaging is very well covered, and the camera still rocks. Using this as daily driver means you can do all the communication you need, yet 0 time is wasted throughout the day on a phone addiction. All for 50 bucks and it is even green as it is second hand. The browser sucks, that is the only downside, but it does NOT suck when attached to an external display. But it is a good 4G hotspot for your notebook.

I owned this phone and never had an issue where it got hot and overheated. Battery life and performance was great for it's time. Of all the phones I've owned this was my favorite by far. So many features that other platforms are still stealing features from.
I've never had the 950, but I've had plenty other Windows phones and never had any issue with overheating. I think there can be overheating on any device, so it wouldn't be unique anyway.

I have 2. And love them. In addition to 2 920s and 1 640XL. Love my windows phone. They all are working perfectly. Yeah..I have a Samsung as a daily driver. One thing not mentioned in this video. I dare any phone to compete with the audio via headphones on a 950XL. I use mine for my music. Paired with great headphones..you won't want to stop listening.
About the audio quality with headphones with dolby turned on… i have to say that what you said is 100% true to this day still.
Had one loved it my fav phone and OS of all times. I have now an iPhone 7 yeah its good as they say but lacks the magic and mystic beaty of live tiles and all Windows phone OS. Got to buy one again i miss that fellow friend so much that gorgeaous Lumia 950xl with that Beast camera it felt so much… me. It was THE phone. I cant explain how much i still miss it and love it and i get an anger and frustration cause MS killed it and it will never come back. Ever. Thats just…sad.

How did you add your Microsoft account? Not possible for me with my new 950.
My first ever phone was Microsoft Lumia 640 XL. and it was fabulous. I loved it so much.
Worked so well, never hanged even when multiple apps were used simultaneously. Soke heating problem was definitely there but seldom.
Used it very rough for full 4 years and at last changed.
Still have it in my drawer. Just a battery change is needed, and it'll be ready for use again.
Lumia series was a revolution.
Oh GOD! How much I wish to have this phone in market! I definitely would've bought it. The UI & UX was something to fall in love with.
The plastic body had nothing to do with battery performance. The LG G2 had a plastic body and it had incredible battery life. The way the chips are arranged inside and the efficiency of the chipsets are mostly to blame.
Well heat dissipation on most phones can be easily done via the metal body and not having to have heat pipes n stuff (with a few exceptions like ROG)..the internal design was bad too but it coulda be solved somewhat with a metal body...not to mention it felt cheap and a huge downgrade from the Nokia Unibody design
it's also not the SoC itself since LG G2 used SD800 and this phone used SD801, only 0,2Ghz difference. It's mostly because of the operating system itself.

I've used every OS on a phone and when it came to getting contracts in the mid 2010's, both me and my wife used to pick Windows. They're slick, easy to use, great design and I've got two 650's one 550 and 640, they all still work, but of course not supported, which is a massive shame.
think the reason windows phone failed was the lack of google apps and services , if google had supported windows and not apple the iphone would be dead and windows phone would still be here.
Justified criticism of heat build up, and it's adverse effect on battery life, in the 950XL, but the phone did have a user replaceable battery.
So what about the effect on a battery with the current obsession with fast charging, in combination with the Snapdragon 888 chip?
Then there is the cost of having to have a technician replace the battery.
Windows is still my favourite OS,
I recently bought a 950XL, with the dealer's 2 year warranty, for £95, and a Microsoft Display Dock for £15.
Manufacturer Warranty Support for these phones ended on 31st of December 2020 I believe which is frustrating as I was looking for a new windows phone as my Nokia 3G is being switched off by my provider.
I was an early adaptor of Windows phone, I had a LG Optimus 7 which broke within a year of use. However, I used to work at a ISP who also dealt with mobiles and I saw this on the showroom. I loved these phones but no one bought them, everyone went for iPhones & Androids
Still using my Lumia 950 as my daily driver to this day. I do have my old 950 XL, but I haven't fix the cracked screen yet.
How do go about getting apps to this day? or do you just use it for basic calls and messaging? just curious since ive bought a second hand one to collect!
I loved to use this phone. I still have it. But sadly the battery is dead. Pity that Microsoft let the phone section down 😢

I had windows phones for years (Nokia ones I don't like the Microsoft ones). I still have a 930 in my drawer that i purposely kept running 8.1. I don't use Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram etc so lack of apps didn't bother me, If I could use mobile banking I'd honestly still be using it every day. Such a shame 🤦🏻

Never mind 2021, I'm still using the (smaller) 950 as of June 2022 as my daily driver. The camera can still put a serious fight against modern smartphones of today with advanced AI and ML processing algorithm.

great video 950 non xl was my last windows phone to be honest i liked my 929 icon better body was better for me and something to do with the home button on the 950 i aways hit when texting so didnt like that on the 950 if the app store still worked for messenger to make facebook calls i would never bought my first android in 2022 my nokia icon was the longest lasted phone ever still works charger port is bad might even buy another for a back up phone sence there so cheap i like nokia so i bought the nokia 8 5g had it for a week and went to put another sim in it and sim wouldent go in so sent it back hoping to get my money back would of been nice if some how microsoft or android could make duel os phone to boot in windows or android and be able to use messenger other then that i still use edge on my 950 never have any problems

I still use it, and it is may favourate; easy to use. The Camera is excellent. Only problem, no whatapp and I can't install viber after recent reset???
Next try the HP Elite X3 Windows phone!
There's no risk in using an outdated app… just don't use a modified app you downloaded from another source that is not the store

You can still use it but its painful nowadays everything is more aimed for pc

Haven't tested but the battery life wasn't good in general...let alone for hotspot

u can use it for basic needs, you can make call or sms but not much more because it isn't much apps for it
Build quality of these phones was rubbish. I had two. I bought the second one because the first failed to recognise there was a sim installed after a few months of use. I reckoned it had to be a faulty phone so I bought another as I really liked the operating system. After less than a year the second one also said there was no sim inserted even though there was. Had to have been a design flaw then. Just rubbish sold at a premium. Not much wonder they flopped.
were yours unlocked?...this phone had heating issues but i've never heard of a widespread sim issue
@@Techformative557 Yes. Both phones were carrier free. Forgot to mention that the first phone was the 660xl so that's why I tried the 950xl to see if it was a better phone. I tried taking out the sim and reseating it to see if it was just dirt/dust build up but to no avail.

Reset the phone and try again ..if that doesn't work try with airplane mode turned on with wifi

I think Nokia engineers did have any interest after Microsoft bought the company. So they made this crappy and ugly looking phone. Lumia devices had best design except 950.
