      At Bad Rap's. Bad' Rap's is a grocery store on imagination lane when foods that tend to have all the bad reputations go. They're marketed with warped histories to make it sound like they're really bad.

      Loretta Vial ~I used to think the same about Trader Joe's. You can't do all your shopping there, but for many things it's actually cheaper.I' come out of there with five full paper bags of groceries for $150; the same would be $250 to $300 at Safeway or whatever chain.

    Ambrosia salad, is still served and made in the Philippines. We call it Fruit Salad though. It is treated as a dessert, made from heavy cream, condensed milk, Canned Fruit Cocktail, Canned Pineapples, freah fruit, and soft coconut meat(usually fresh ones).

    Crisco started out as an alternative to lard used as shortening in cooking. Originally, Crisco was made from cottonseed oil. Maybe it still is, I'm not sure, but it was full of transfats. When this became an issue, Crisco changed its chemical makeup to eliminate the transfats. Many people still use Crisco in pastry crusts, cookies, and fry food in it as well.

      @@lzeph - True. few well known products disappear all at the same time as long as there's still a demand. High-C isn't even completely gone just much less popular.
      More and more of us are choosing to purchase healthier food. Driving sales down for H-C & other 'unhealthy' food making them harder to find. Over time certain brands will disappear one by one.
      But no worries. If we get nostalgic and have a craving we can still find an assortment of these foods in some areas. Mainly in highly discounted, low priced, bring your own bag type of grocery stores (like Save-A-Lot, & Price Rite).
      These foods/drinks or a no-name brand copy of them will likely be on sale there for a very long time. Because it's hard to be chosey when you need to count every penny.

    And yet obesity is higher than ever before. We’ve just shifted our sugar and calorie consumption to higher end “healthy” brands and casual restaurants. Places like Starbucks serve nothing but caffeine laden sugar drinks (and sugar foods and cakes), shake shack and five guys burgers (healthy high quality fats and milk shake), Chipotle (hip calories), Cheesecake Factory (tasty and great ambiance 2,000 calorie dishes), etc. We’d probably be better off eating a Swanson TV Dinner at this point.

      If you work in a hospital, eating a microwaved dinner, brought from home, might be the only way you can eat your lunch in the brief time that you are allotted. You won't spend the majority of your timed 30 minutes or less, walking to the cafeteria, buying lunch, waiting in line to pay for your lunch, walking back to your unit with your lunch, to eat it in the five minutes that you have remaining.
      If you bring a frozen dinner: you can stay in your unit, eat your apple, while your frozen dinner is in the microwave, eat your microwave dinner with the fork you brought from home, and drink the water that you brought from home- with minutes to spare.

    • @Panglos
      @Panglos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I disagree with a lot of what's presented, but by "TV dinner" I think the uploader means a specific kind of frozen packaged meal that includes multiple separate dishes (a main entree plus up to three sides) that usually don't heat well together. It's a bad idea to expect a piece of corn bread to heat at the same rate a piece of chicken does, for example. The best you can expect is a compromise where the bread is overdone and chewy, and the chicken is cool and not crispy. That situation doesn't apply to the bowl you're talking about.

Now the quantity of salt in some items may be higher than you personally care for. However, I find that as someone with hyponatremia I have to be careful to eat ENOUGH salt every day. Otherwise I risk kidney failure and several other nasty painful potential deaths. So, realize that not EVERYONE needs to limit their salt intake. In fact too little salt is actually worse health wise. Though yes, I know that the average is to over do salt.

      You're right. Only thing is that like so many other things, folks got onto something else. That doesn't mean the product actually tanked though. It hasn't. In 1998 Sunny Delight brought this beverage back as a more catchy and modern "Sunny D" from the marketing grave with a successful campaign. I remember it from my childhood in the 70's. Sunny Delight was tasty but really awful for you then and has remained so. This video claims the product has tanked but Gerber Foods disagrees with that finding and because it's already been proven that high fructose corn syrup is addictive, I doubt the product will tank unless someone in the Fed makes it necessary to put a warning label on it. In the meantime Gerber Foods might need to consider a sugar free alternative and remarketing strategy for the possible new product.

      in the 50's and 60's when I was growing up, my mom would make a "jello salad" and it was canned fruit with fruit flavored jello. Sometimes the whipped cream would be folded in before chilling, sometimes the whipped cream would be on top. It took me years to be able to eat whipped cream after that. lol. That stuff was "Gnasstie!" (that's how it's spelled when it's nasty X 10.)

    • @christystewart4567
      @christystewart4567 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elaine Flanagan sounds familiar. Ours had different combinations but canned fruit cocktail was always in there. Sometimes mini marshmallows and/or cottage cheese. I think our family may have folded in the whipped cream at one time or another but I’m almost positive if they did it was Cool Whip.
      What’s funny is I’ve made gelatin with fresh fruit juice before and it’s really good. I could see putting in fresh fruit in it but my memories cringe at the idea 😀

      I love Daisy brand natural cottage cheese (read the label - you shouldn't find more than 3 ingredients you understand!) with sliced banana and cinnamon in the morning (or really any time 😂). 1/2 to 1 cup of high protein cottage cheese is filling for a while, a banana, high in potassium, magnesium, folate and other B vitamins, gives a bit of energy, and cinnamon, a thermogenic spice, gets the metabolism going while regulating insulin. No sugar or anything else needed. It's perfect, in my opinion!

      Crisco shortening was developed as a cheap substitute for butter, and a kosher and parve substitute for lard. IMHO, baked goods made with butter are far superior from those made with shortening, both tastier and healthier.

      I was an eighties kid in Cincinnati, but my whole family was from Tennessee. We would go visit my grandparents every summer and every other Christmas (always a happy trip aside from arguing with my sister - happy times).
      Anyway, every single morning we were there, my grandma on my mom's side turned the stove on, heated an iron skillet and grabbed a large spoonful of lard. Once it was ready, she started dropping sausage and bacon on that sucker. Once that was done, she cracked some eggs and scrambled 'em up in that same pan. Some times she made gravy instead of eggs. Poor that stuff over her scratch biscuits and you won't be hungry for days.
      She was an amazing country gal that could make a kid from the suburbs feel like a country boy!
      On a side note, I've been eating the same way ever since and have perfect blood pressure, my ticker is strong as steel and my cholesterol is always down.
      Go figure.
