Nice! As crazy college freshmen, we took a stock Civic up to the top of Imogene, any mud would have shut us down, but we made it, much to the surprise of the lift-kit jeep folks at the summit

We took our 2024 Forester Wilderness all the way to the very top of Yankee Boy Basin earlier this summer. I just have dash camera footage, but I was planning on posting it. I think the 2019 Forester could do it too if it was completely empty. The altitude and incline on that trail is freakin crazy! Oh! And one really nasty rocky section!

It looks like a couple of those are fairly stock, and a couple are lifted and have a lot of armor. Everybody did great and it looked fun. I was wondering how my unlifted Wilderness would do up there. I've got 29 1/2" tires, so my clearance is a bit over 10 inches unlifted. I think power wise I would be ok, since the turbo should help in the altitude, but I always worry about how much 10" really is. Of course our pumkins on independant suspension are well tucked in so our clearance goes further in a way, if we pick our lines well. And I was encouraged by some of the more stock looking clearances just crawling up like a billy goat. I think even that one that only tried twice on that first obstacle could have made it up that if he approached it slowly and then nailed it right before his lip hit the rock. The acceleration lifts up your front end, and if you only need an inch or so for a foot or so, that gets you past those, WITH momentum, which would have carried you straight up that. But I am the same way, when I start banging on things, I usually err towards caution as well. Things look and sound different in the drivers seat, and he likely didn't realize how close he was to being able to completely clear all knocks with the right throttle control and timing. I think all the Sub's had a great showing. I wish I lived closer, that is a beautiful area. I live in Southern California. We have lots of nice trails too, but Colorado is amazing.

You mentioned a turbo, so you must have an outback wilderness. If you disconnect or delete your swaybars, have skidplates, and pick the right line, then you’d out perform all of us! None of the Subarus in this video have sway bars, haha. You’ve got a killer machine, do those things and get out there and get into it! Cheers! 😄
The bigger problem with the obstacle you mention is the Subaru is programmed to cut engine power to protect the CVT. Even if they had turbos, the engine would likely have not been able to produce enough power because of that. In your Wilderness you would have an advantage that these didn't... gearing. Wilderness models have lower axle and lower CVT gearing.
@@ThinkFreely2012partially true but although the wilderness model may have a more aggressive final drive ratio it also has a much less aggressive first gear. When we do the math, the wilderness has less low end power. (It does have a much more powerful engine than the base model of course, but gearing wise, it's less agressive.)
@mandingo9471 every bit of literature I've found on the Wilderness from Subaru states that the wilderness has a different model CVT with different ratios than the other trims. I'll admit I can't recall 100% if this is true for the Outback, but it is for the Forester.
That's exactly what I've been thinking too! It turns out that they did! The Forester Wilderness has lower diff gears AND a lower first gear! The combined effect is a crawl ratio that is 26% lower. I'm going to make a video about this topic. I also placed an order for one a couple days ago. It should be here in November. I can't wait to do the testing!
Love my '23 Forester Wilderness. Got primitive racing skid plates and 2 inch suspension lift installed. Still trying to work out bumpers, sliders, and winch in my head. It's a great Lil mountain goat!
Sounds like you've got a killer machine! You're right about the OW likely limiting power to protect the CVT. The OW makes a psyco amount of torque at like 2,000 RPM. The FW has a better first gear ratio than the OW. I actually just placed an order for a 2024 FW because I did the research and basic math and it has a 26% better crawl ratio than my 2019 Forester! I'm going to make a video about this topic soon. Crawl ratio is the first gear multiplied by the axle final drive ratio, higher numerically is better. The Crosstrek Wilderness has the same drivetrain as the Forester Wilderness, I would have ordered one of those, but I can't comfortably sleep inside it, haha.
Matt H. - that was impressive and inspiring! Your Forester SK doesn’t have a locker? Any mods to help you get up those hills, other than a cold air intake and a tranny cooler? Thanks! 😄 yeah, no locker for me. X-mode does really well. The only advantage to having a locker that I can see is for high speed use, like rally racing. My tires are 1.9” taller than stock, that was hurting me on the climbs, but the wheels are tires are light weight. I have an intake, but Subarus are famous for requiring a professional dyno and re-tune to benefit from performance mods. The transmission cooler is a MUST. I played around with a few configurations and I found the best one. I’ll make a video about it soon. The main thing is keeping everything light. Don’t bring everything, just take what you need. Cheers! 😄

I believe you’re running 245/65/r17… I’m running tires that are about 1/2” less diameter (235/65/r17). I didn’t feel like doing any cutting, haha. Also, your video review of the Nitto Nomad Grapplers definitely helped me decide to purchase them. I actually had a ‘22 Forester Wilderness that I sold a couple of months ago (it’s a long story, haha). Anyway, next week, I’ll be installing an Iron Man 2” ats lift (non Spec-C) and skid plates on my ‘23 Sport. It should be a good start. I’m looking forward to checking out your tranny cooler video. I'm glad to hear that you got the Nomad Grapplers! I love mine! Your slightly smaller tires will help your overall gearing on those high altitude, steep climbs. Good choice on the suspension! The medium springs are more comfortable and they articulate better. Delete both swaybars while you're doing the suspension. None of the 4 Subarus in this video have swaybars. You get more comfort, traction, and articulation without them. Also, don't bother installing the rear subframe spacers that came with your Ironman kit. I went back and removed mine about a year ago. It is annoying to install them, and you don't need them. Omitting them will keep your diff 2" higher, one of the key advantages of fully independent suspension. Omitting them will also keep your track width the same front-to-rear. Finally, omitting them will improve the rear camber. From the factory, there is quite a bit of negative camber in the back. This is normally not adjustable, BUT doing the suspension lift without a rear subframe drop will cause the multi-link rear to straighten the tires up nicely, improving traction and tire life.
@@MatthewHeiskell yeah, I was running Falken Wildpeak AT trails on my wilderness…they were a great all-around tire, but in certain muddy conditions, they did not perform all that well. Either way, I decided to give the Nomad Grapplers a shot. I’m hesitant to do a full swaybar delete; most of my driving is street/highway. Maybe I’ll play around with removing it under certain off-road conditions. I’m probably 75/25 street vs. off road at the moment. Now you’ve got me thinking about possibly not installing the rear subframe spacers. Full disclosure: I’m having a reputable shop install everything for me. I know the rear subframe kit includes centering so that if I ever decided to go with a bigger tire, the wheels should stay centered, correct? Also, I’m worried that if I don’t install the rear subframe spacers, I might put the driveline at a weird angle and I may get a shudder/wobble (?). I’m being a bit proactive too in that during the lift install, I will have a carrier bearing spacer installed as well - just in case there’s a little wobble. Did you experience any driveline wobble or vibration after you removed your sub frame spacers? Thank you so much for all of your help and detailed responses so far!

Thanks Steve! 😄 Yeah, the SK is pretty dang good! Yes, I just preferred a white FW because the crawl ratio is 26% better. I think getting to the top of Imogene demonstrates that the normal SK is easily good enough, but I want to push the envelope of what a Subaru can do. My plans are pretty normal. Same suspension, another aluminum bumper, etc.

It should be here in November. I do plan on making some comparison videos. My current forester should be better in every way except crawl ratio. A stormtrooper build would be awesome, but I’m selling the current forester after swapping the wheels, tires, and suspension. This time when I build the new aluminum bumper, I’m going to raise/tilt the radiator and make a new lower radiator support to reallly improve the approach angle. So same silver wheels, and a new silver bumper, really bare aluminum. Maybe I could paint the wheels and new bumper white?

But for me the Wilderness looks so tough and "off-road" because of the black panels/bumpers/wheels. I think white wheels/front bumper won't match the rest of the car very well. The drone shots in this video were mind-blowing, the ONLY thing I didn't like about it was that we didn't really see to much of your car in action!
Last weekend I took our 2023 Subaru Ascent up a 17 degree (about 30% grade) incline over loose rock and moguls and it had no trouble going up. For your attempts at around 2:00 in the video above, do they not have enough power? I'm curious if you tried turning off any traction control (via VDC) or tried forcing them into 1st (assuming they have CVT's). I noticed when I turned off VDC in our Ascent it had no problems going up. Almost like VDC is preventing power from reaching the wheels.
Bruceyyyyy is very experienced, I’m sure he tried everything. Do you really mean VDC? Traction control is a button, but disabling VDC usually requires pulling the brake fuse. Bruceyyyyy actually made a great video about this.
@@MatthewHeiskell My bad, I didn't mean to insinuate anything. In the Ascent VDC turns off everything, I don't think I can turn off just traction control.
From what I've seen - the previous gen Outbacks are the most disappointing off-road (think TFL) and that was clearly the case here to, probably not the best choice out of the Subaru range.
Good question! I don’t think a manual transmission would help, you’d have to slip the clutch A LOT. The torque converter in an automatic transmission, CVT included, let’s the engine rev up to 2,000 RPM even at very slow speeds. This is assuming that the auto and manual transmissions have the same gearing. If the manual has a lower first gear, it will be a close competition.

This time when I build the new aluminum bumper, I’m going to raise/tilt the radiator and make a new lower radiator support to reallly improve the approach angle. So same silver wheels, and a new silver bumper, really bare aluminum. Maybe I could paint the wheels and new bumper white?
@@MatthewHeiskell Sounds like an awesome project, looking forward to seeing all the videos of it in action! Hmm personal choice I guess! But for me the Wilderness looks so tough and "off-road" because of the black panels/bumpers/wheels. I think white wheels/front bumper won't match the rest of the car very well. The drone shots in this video were mind-blowing, the ONLY thing I didn't like about it was that we didn't really see to much of your car in action!
Did bruceyyyy have spacers and the Ironman suspension? Or just the Ironman?

Last weekend I took our 2023 Subaru Ascent up a 17 degree (about 30% grade) incline over loose rock and moguls and it had no trouble going up.
For your attempts at around 2:00 in the video above, do they not have enough power? I'm curious if you tried turning off any traction control (via VDC) or tried forcing them into 1st (assuming they have CVT's). I noticed when I turned off VDC in our Ascent it had no problems going up. Almost like VDC is preventing power from reaching the wheels.
Bruceyyyyy is very experienced, I’m sure he tried everything. Do you really mean VDC? Traction control is a button, but disabling VDC usually requires pulling the brake fuse. Bruceyyyyy actually made a great video about this.
@@MatthewHeiskell My bad, I didn't mean to insinuate anything. In the Ascent VDC turns off everything, I don't think I can turn off just traction control.
From what I've seen - the previous gen Outbacks are the most disappointing off-road (think TFL) and that was clearly the case here to, probably not the best choice out of the Subaru range.
Yeah, I hate to say that, but yeah, the Outbacks are not having a good showing.

Good question! I don’t think a manual transmission would help, you’d have to slip the clutch A LOT. The torque converter in an automatic transmission, CVT included, let’s the engine rev up to 2,000 RPM even at very slow speeds. This is assuming that the auto and manual transmissions have the same gearing. If the manual has a lower first gear, it will be a close competition.
