They beat a very good Penn St. team, which itself had been only one last second field go away from going to a national championship game. USC destroyed them. Rey M., E.Griffin, M.Sanchez, C. Matthews, K,Maiava, J.Casey, etc., Brian Cushing and T.Mays were also on that team as well. There were 11 USC guys drafted that year.

Because, as usual, Pete without Norm Chow/Orgeron/Tim Davis found a way to crap the bed to a vastly overmatched team he should've destroyed, choking the Pac-10 road opener, usually around the fourth game of the season. And being unable to win a stinking game in the state of Oregon since 2005 for the third straight time. Just like at Oregon State in 2006. Or in choking to 41-point underdog Stanford at home in 2007. Sad to see, but choking a game like that will keep a team out of the BCS Championship. The worst sin of all was scoring ZERO offensive TDs and losing 13-9 of whateever to a crappy 4-6 UCLA team in 2006 with the BCS game on the line. Beat 4-6 UCLA and they were IN, and would've destroyed Ohio State that year. All they had to do was win and they'd again be in the national championship game. Pathetic. Pete could've (should've) won in 2005, easily in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Dude could've won 6 straight national championships. As Ted Miller of ESPN said "Pete won't win another National Championship now that he's run off Chow and the rest of the adults from his coaching staff." He was right. Instead, we get Goatboy Kiffin and Cutty Sark. Pride and arrogance comes before the fall, and if Pete would've checked his ego and kept Chow (and Tim Davis, who left when Chow left and couldn't stand Kiffin), he could've made history.
That's coach Pat Ruel. He recruited me outta high school when he was at USC. Came to visit me at school and his energy was unmatched. Had me wanting to run through a wall for him. Unfortunately my SATs weren't up to par and I didn't qualify and couldn't accept the scholarship that was offered.

Their Only loss was ON THE ROAD to a 9-3 Oregon State team while Florida Lost AT HOME. PAC 10 Also went UNDEFEATED (5-0) that year in Bowl games. I'd put my Money on USC Beating the Swamp out of florida if they played that year. But because the sec is an Espn and BCS darling, they had to Protect florida from that ASS WHOOPIN and keep the sec teams FAR AWAY From USC as possible Until Pete Carroll Left for the NFL.
I always try to tell people the 2008 USC team was one of, if not, the best Pete Carroll team, but people usually put the 2005 team which lost to Texas, 2002 team, with Carson & Polamalu that had 2 losses, 2003 team with Mike W., which had 1 loss, and the infamous 2004 team that went undefeated ahead of this team, and I feel with that the "08 team that had 3 shutouts and almost shout-out Notre Dame 35-3, was one of Pete's best teams by far!!

This was definitely the best defense of the Carroll era. the offense was very very good, but nowhere near the 04 & 05 teams, imo. but then again the 05 team had nowhere near this team's defense. 2004 team though, did. The ideal all time Carroll era team was the 2004 or 2005 offense and the 2008 defense.
