The chinese audio is immersive, it helps to make this world authentic...and also finally...a serious.... non anime modern rpg game from Asia.
Glad to hear your enthusiasm because I saw this game and wasn't sure decided to give it a try but then it was gone. ( GameStop ) hunted it down and look forward now to playing it. 🙂
I really like this game. Sword and Fairy 7 and Gujian 3 are also really good. Really good storylines and fun to play. Yes they are a bit linear but the gameplay and everything else is so much fun it really doesn’t matter much. The parrot is beyond annoying. I highly recommend all 3 of these Wuxia games.
Just for the sake of awareness, they're xianxia not wuxia. :P Wuxia are very low fantasy and more about impressive kungfu, alternate history and such. Xianxia is where you see more fantasy like more myth creatures and such as well as flying swords and magic, etc.
I just finished this game on hard and it's a mixed bag. Contrary to the gist of the review, it does have several shortcomings! Combat is not super tight. You must release your block to dodge which can make it feel sluggish. Cannot cancel animations and inputs can also feel a bit loose. Worst of all, enemies don't have hitstun, recovey or flinch states (unless a specific skill causes stun) . None of them! This mutes strategic thinking and nullifies the idea of 'openings' (the cornerstone of good enemy design). Because of this, combat is spotty and frequently unrewarding. On higher difficulties, this can be frustrating. Spells are pretty well implemented but have long cooldowns. It should be pointed out that there are a lot of cuts and exposition in the game. Not a detractor per se but be aware there are some long ass d&m chats. And a super annoying parrot! Some lazy boss design. One early boss has you placed in a smallish kill box where you can get stun locked. This is compounded by a dark room where you can corner yourself. I hate it when a dev's idea of making something harder is to make it dark - it's bollocks. Some systems are not explained well. Improving weapons and armor, counterintuitively, is not done in towns with smiths but in the confines of your character's mind. Yup, this isn't well translated. It's good to see a Chinese focused dev striding out with some decent ideas. There is obvious passion in the story and the detailed main characters. Plenty of varied environments help too. It has other issues reflecting its budget These include the odd stutter and frame drop. It's a 7 at the absolute max given its combat problems can make for a slog.
Not to mention this game is super short in my opinion. Played it on PC and it took me 10-15hrs max to complete and i casually play as well. Not worth the £45 in the store. I will wait for massive discount before getting this again on PS.
I think this might be why the reviewer went so light on it, from the footage shown, whenever he takes damage, it looks non-existent. He didn't have to interact with enemies that could kill him, which in turn allows him to ignore problems with combat, as he no longer needs to evaluate it critically.
