    I carried the Hi-Power for many years in the British Army (before we switched to the Sig Sauer P226 and then later on the Glock 17).. Out of the 3 different sidearms I carried during my military career, I actually preferred the Browning.. Its a beautiful pistol and seemed to fit my hand better than either the Sig or the Glock..
    An excellent review of an excellent weapon ... Thank you!! 🔫 🔫 🔫 👍 👍 👍

      Thank you! I really like the way the Hi Power fits my hand and points for me too. That fact that it gave long and distinguished service to your military is an added bonus for me!

      @@hrfunk Yeah, unfortunately the Hi-Powers we had were starting to show their age as they had been in service for decades... Once Afghanistan really kicked off circa 2006 and onwards, there was suddenly a great demand for additional side arms as we were engaged in some really serious combat. The army made an urgent operational purchase of a load of Sig P226s and then later Glock 17s so I was forced to give up my favourite pistol.. Times move on unfortunately and as soldiers we are obliged to use the weapons we are issued with. If I lived in your beautiful country and was able to carry a pistol for self defence purposes, I don't think I could go far wrong with a good 15 + 1 capacity Hi-Power (with some decent hollow points). Thank you again for the excellent review!! I've just subscribed to your channel now!!

    I carried a Mark III for 22 years in the British Royal Air Force, I even came over 4 or 5 times to the Armed Forces Small Arms Meet run out of camp Robinson Arkansas as part of the RAF Combat Shooting Team... Keep the Mags Clean and oil the mag safety to keep the trigger smooth...

    Great video. You prefer a 6 lb pull, I like mine about 4.5lbs. To each their own and in what was a free country we should recognize and respect people will make different choices and have different preferences. There is no question your expertise and experience exceed my own by orders of magnitude (which is why I watch you to learn).
    Still, I maintain a magazine disconnect is a hazard device, and one I had removed from my two HiPowers. Massad Ayoob previously held that view until he was shown reports of two incidents where LEOs were in a struggle for their firearm and managed to hit the mag release, thereby disabling the pistol. While I absolutely believe Mr. Ayoob read those reports, I find the reports too fantastic to be believable. I just can’t imagine anyone in a fight for their gun with a deadly adversary having the presence of mind to eject the magazine and being able to effect that action while in the midst of a struggle. Fine, let’s say this did happen a few times, how likely is that scenario and how likely is someone losing control of their weapon going to be able to do that?
    By contrast, we know magazines are the weak point of semi-auto pistols - almost all of our malfunction drills involve tapping, reseating, or stripping out the magazine. We hear a bump in the night, we grab our trusty Browning and perform a low light check of the chamber and mag as we were taught, but we fail to fully seat the magazine. I’ve done that on the range many times with all sorts of pistols. With my 1911s, I still have a shot. With any handgun with a disconnect, I’d be in a very bad way. To me - just for myself - I see a magazine issue or malfunction requiring magazine manipulation as far more likely than being John Wick in a fight for my gun and pressing the magic button. As I wrote, to each their own - we have to judge risks for our own situation.
    I believe I read elsewhere you have a HP with the mag disconnect hazard removed, but left it in place here because you want to keep it original. That’s an excellent reason. If I had a HP as a collectible, I would likely come to the same decision.
    Regardless, I enjoy your videos and have tremendous respect for your knowledge and insight. Thank you very much for taking the time to share expertise with us.

    You take an intellectual perspective in your reviews. There are many examples of obsolete weapons still in service and preferred by those having them, for example world war bolt operated rifles turning up in Africa and the Middle East to this day. If an operator has a High Power in hand with a round chambered and cocked 'n locked he is equal to an adversary with any polymer wondernine also in condition 1. The holy grail question is the mechanics of getting off that 1st most important shot either in double action, single action or safe action mode but its all the same when accomplished. High Power is ergonomically thin and pointable, modern pistols chunky.

    It only takes 5 minutes to remove the mag safety, simply tap out it's retaining pin on the trigger then all the gritty creep feel goes and it drops about a pound in pull. Did it to every HP I have owned. Actually, technically I still 'own' two MK3's but one was confiscated by the French government after registration and the other by the South African government after importing and registering it. Yep, "registration" equals "confiscation "! BTW the last MK3 I purchased came with booster springs at the base of the mags to eject them, worked really well, boy did they fly out fast when you pushed the mag release button!

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Britishshooter I removed the mag safety i one of my Hi Powers. It is, however, still in my Mark III mainly because the trigger is pretty good even with it installed. The other reason it's still there is because I hate to alter that pistol. It's in proper L9A1 configuration, and I like it that way.

    • @Britishshooter

      Fair enough. It is a really nice pistol, now you videos have got me lusting after a Browning as much as a 1911. I so long to have the freedom to shoot pistols again. I think I am going to have to move to the USA. I have been travelling there quite a bit in the last few years, I rode my KTM 690 dual sport across 14 states on the Trans America Trail in 2015 (flew with the bike in the cargo hold from Heathrow UK to Montreal and crossed the border then left again by plane from Vancouver) the USA certainly has some beautiful countryside, loved the Rockies.

As much as the trips have been fun and educational, the fact that you are subjected to, what we in this country would consider unreasonable government intrusion into your lives, is blatantly obvious. That you are denied the fundamental right of self defense is a crime in itself. If you are thinking of immigrating to the US, rest assured you will be welcome, so long as you follow the proper procedure. It's only illegal immigrants (and, of course, terrorists) who are unwelcome here.

      I appreciate that very much Sir, I really do. Sometimes I feel like I am living in a country that has lost it's self awareness and sense of history. If a citizen is not allowed to defend his or her own life, then how can that person be anything but a slave, and how can that country regard itself to be anything but a totalitarian state? My dear friend,never give an inch, defend your rights to your last breath or you will end up like us.

    Love my Hi-Power Mark III.. Not obsolete.. Obsolete implies that something newer is better. I'm not seeing better in any of the new firearms. Every negative can be fixed. Grips : Changeable. Mag Safety : It's Easily removable. Trigger pull : 100 % Customizable with Spring kits and gentle tweak of the sear spring. Sights : Easily customizable both front and rear are Dovetailed. I did all the fixes I mentioned. I now have a beautiful Hi Power Range gun with a 3.3 pound smooth as glass trigger. Fibre optic front sight and 15 round MecGar mags. Beautiful Rosewood checkered Grips and earlier this week I Glass bead blasted the entire frame, hammer , trigger and controls. Resulted in a beautiful brushed aluminum frame. So Obsolete ?? I carried a 60’s era BHP as my off-duty for many years [I started with a Colt commercial ‘1911-A1-ish’ and gravitated to the BHP* (*trigger disconnect removed. A European mandated feature)]. The only thing, other than the uncertainty in manipulating the European-sized😮safety tab [now factory-corrected] is the somewhat longer than the 1911 trigger reset which, at least on mine is neither audibly or tactilely detectible (as it is in the 1911). I view this as a training issue, as long familiarity has eliminated any uncertainty as to following shots.
    As to budget friendliness, I plan to look into the Springfield Armory made SA-35 which with it’s forged steel slide and frame AND CNC machining holds promise as a real 19:33 upgrade to an already high quality pistol.

    At this point "Budget Hi Power" is a myth. Anything Browning or FN marked is insanely priced, and even the clones are getting massively expensive.
    Without a pull gauge, I'm just guessing that the trigger on my Mauser marked HP clone is right around 8 lb - in between the 10-12 lb DA and 5-6 lb SA on my M9. The sights on my HP clone are where it really falls flat, they're very much WW2 era GI sights; a low narrow notch in the rear and a short half-moon up front.

      You may well join the CAF or a police force. However, in both cases, your service weapon will be whatever higher designates it to be. In the CAF, it will probably be an Inglis with a few exceptions carrying the SIG.
      There may be some police forces in Canada who do indeed allow you to carry concealed away from work without special permission, but I have yet to hear of one who lets you decide what that weapon will be.

    Guess who designed the FIRST “striker fired” pistol….. John Browning. In fact, he wanted to make the Hi-Power a striker fed gun, however it never happened. I’m don’t remember if that was because France told Browning they didn’t want that or if it was because years later, Dieudonne Saive decided against it with the final prototype of the Hi-power. Nonetheless, JMB did create the first striker fired (prototype) pistol.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know before he died he built two rather crude tool-room models of his concept of the pistol that would eventually become the Hi Power. If I remember correctly, one was hammer-fired and the other was striker-fired. I don’t know why the hammer-fired version was ultimately selected.

    As someone who has carried a Hi-Power into harm's way, I will state categorically that if the SHTF I would prefer to take a P-35 with me over any "modern" 9mm I have tried to date. On the BEST one I owned, I DID have a good gunsmith remove the magazine disconnect safety; this took all of the "grit" out the pull, reduced the pull weight considerably (slightly under 4 lbs.), and alleviated the issue of the magazine not dropping free. I still kick myself for letting that pistol go...

    I _think_ my Argie FM is a clone of the early '60s High Power, with the external extractor, spur hammer, tiny safety and flat black plastic grips. Given that the early HPs with the round 'rowel' hammer was bad about biting, I definitely like the newer hammer. It just touches my hand as the pistol recoils. I plan to replace the tiny button safety with the larger Browning ambi safety, but otherwise leave it as is.

      I also have the Argentine FM Hi Power, which is a genuine FN licensed Hi Power made on FN machinery. It's basically a 1960s-70s FN Mark II design, 100% compatible and functions very well. I believe the Argentine FM is the only genuine Hi Power to actually be rollmarked "Hi Power"! Being an idiot I neglected for decades to buy a Hi Power then 12 years ago saw this one quite cheap. A little Googling and I dashed back to the gun store to snatch up the FM. I think the FMs with the heavier slide (and the compact Detective model) are newer manufacture, around 1995. My older one was made around 1988 I think.
      A few years ago I came across a dozen Israeli surplus Hi Powers Cabellas had just put on display, all priced at $450. Most were FN rollmarked Mark IIs but one Mark III was rollmarked Browning and "made" in Utah though it did have an importer marking like the Belgian pistols. (I thought this was quite interesting as Browning marked FNs usually were earmarked for sale in the USA but I guess some got redirected.) I narrowed it down to the curious Browning Mark III because of the better sights plus it had little internal wear though a lot of rough wear on the epoxy finish. That beat up finish was interesting because my Argentine FM Hi Power had the same type of tough black epoxy finish but it wasn't scratched up much. Both are fine pistols, why did I wait so long!

    Hello Sir...As a left handed shooter, I use the safety tab on the right side of the pistol. There is in my Mk III some play in the flipper part of the safety, meaning that the part of the safety my thumb hits has some "up & down" play, almost as if the roll pin that holds the flipper part onto the stud isn't tight enough. Is your gun like that too or does mine sound too loose?

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Chicketano I think a little bit of play is pretty common. So long as the safety engages/disengaged positively and the lever attachment is secure, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Still, if you’re concerned you might want to have a gunsmith take a look at it.

I've read many reports concerning this and received answers ranging from "the last batch shipped to the U.S. in 3/2017" to "2017 is up for review as to whether the model will continue to be manufactured". I would hope that there will be limited runs but it's looking pretty bleak from the calls I've made. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Excellent Channel by the way!

      I've received pretty much the same answers. The last new Hi Power I saw on a dealer's shelf was probably back in February or March. Fortunately, there are a LOT of good pre-owned P-35's out there. Even so, I don't see them for sale very often. If you want one, your best bet these days is to find a good one on one of the on-line sites. The Mark III in this video came from Gunsamerica and it was like new. Now with the Springfield version, interest will be renewed. I disagree with those who think the full size steel handgun has seen its day. I don’t find much appealing about polymer , striker fired pistols. They are tools and they are cheap. The micro 9 may be the rage for ccw, but not as a duty pistol or for home defense. The Browning is still of interest as a historical pistol, but is still viable for home defense and sporting pistol. There are also tons of magazines available. If Ruger is smart they will offer a mag well adapter for the pc 9 carbine that takes the Browning mags. I have two high powers a late model Portuguese built with Browning parts, and an Argentine FM version. I might add a Springfield version. The VERY iteration of the hi-power you have right there, it's flaws, the tail is TOO short, the hammer is TOO exposed while cocked and in general. The BDA corrected that, which was where the Beretta 80 and 90 series got their inspiration from, the BDA. If that Hi Power you have had a tail and hammer like the BDA along with a Double action to single action decock and lock dovetail safety like Beretta's 80 series the Hi Power would be PERFECT. It's still a great gun, it just has flaws. The CZ75 which is an ugly turd but also a great gun corrected most of those flaws.
    You could Say BOTH Beretta and CZ corrected the flaws with the Hi Power. Beretta just did it by making it more like the BDA.
