  • Untextured Glossy Monitors are SO much better for gaming. This is by FAR the best type of gaming display on the market. Eve wants to make one for their Eve Spectrum Display.

Finally! I have been thinking the same about glossy vs anti-glare for years. I was beginning to think I was nuts and it was only me that preferred glossy panels. It made no sense to me that all the devices mobile enough to take outside in the sun had glossy panels but then the giant monitor that you set up indoors in a room that you normally have some level of control over has a frosty layer over it to "protect you from reflections"! 🤦🏻🤷🏻

Personally I think it's good for TVs, because most people don't have very good light isolation inside their house. Normal blinds will leave noticeable glare on a glossy finish. But ultimately having the choice would be best.

@@peaj4812 AFAIK TVs often rely on more advanced techniques than a simple matte coating (like interference-based anti-reflection coating), and IIRC VA panels have some inherent anti-reflective qualities. Also pixels generally being bigger probably reduce the disadvantages significantly

I just wish companies would finally get over the extreme and quite cringy ''gaming'' designs with RGB's flying everywhere and random thick ugly corners, hexagons and the most bizarre-looking choices in every aspect of trying to look ''cool''. And start to make PC's, laptops, monitor's, keyboards and mouses with minimalist and sleek designs but the same specs as ''gaming'' products.

OMG we need more glossy screens TODAY!!! You can tell the difference right away when the video starts.
The reflections are not a big deal when you're engaged with the content on the screen.
I have the glossy Steam Deck screen, a huge Samsung Tablet and the Google Pixel that both have awesome glossy screens. The glare is not even a thought unless you actually want to look for it then your mind focuses on it.
I don't pay attention to the glare when gaming or reading so it's a non issue, the screens are so much brighter than the indoor surroundings, I can still use both screens in bright rooms even.
Now with a 27"-32" glossy panel I can always dim the lights one way or another, because you best believe I'm gonna want the best experience ever.
I'm just hoping OLEDs get cheaper soon and bring glossy screens so I can finally jump on the band wagon.
32" QHD (2560x1440p) OLED Glossy panel for $450-$550 would be perfect...still expensive. But considering how 50"-65" inch OLED TVs are cheaper than some of the $800-1000 monitors nowadays, I think it's time to make gaming screens cheaper to reflect their smaller size so more of us buy them.

Matte screens just absolutely destroy the image quality. And they don't really handle reflections any better, imo. I just don't understand how people think that having reflections smeared across your screen looks any better than having a more defined reflection in a smaller area of your screen. I mean, either way is not ideal to me. The only solution is to control the lighting in your room. And for an entertainment device, like a gaming monitor, in your own home this should not be an issue.

The thing that can help deal with reflections (to an extent) is just a panel of plastic on each side of the monitor. They can be foldable/removable. There are some monitors which have these shields.

I feel like Apple’s old Cinema displays used this approach - super-glossy, super-awesome (for their time).

And they changed it because people hated reflections.

@@AuxHex No they didn’t. Apple still produce all its displays glossy. They recently added a matte as an option for an extra price. but all Apple mobiles, macbooks, imacs, xdr display, they all have glossy panel by default.

Apple MBPs used to have a matte option, like, in the 2000s, and I miss it so much. I can understand a glossy display on a monitor, but laptops, ugh. Way less control over environments. I’m an animator/vfx artist and glossy screens make me crazy. Trying to work on location or on the go, can’t see your screen cuz it’s reflecting the sky or lights.

I got the NEC 20WGX2 back in 2007, which was THE powerhouse gaming monitor with a glossy finish. It's parked at my parents' place these days, still looks amazing. I just bought an ultrawide with a typical inoffensive light matte coating, and while it's a decent compromise I wish it was sharper and not so fuzzy looking

I threw away anything glossy and went full matte years ago... back when monitors were only pushing ~250 nits. You can find displays now that are 400-500 nits and even higher. Very possible that glossy may win out with brighter displays now. They could overpower those minor reflections that used to drive me (and many others) nuts. Just the results of consumers voting on this with their wallets (like I did) years ago. Next time I go monitor shopping I may consider glossy! 🤔

You are 100% correct. There's also an issue with computer monitors being too bright and causing eye strain. So having a matte finish on a monitor where you change the brightness on it for different tasks is why I still choose matte finish personally.

Even the new MacBooks reach 1000 nits now. My IPad Mini pushes 500. These displays are getting wild.

However much the Mac vs PC argument has transpired in my life, honest PCs have always admitted to coveting Apple's display quality, at which point I'll call out Sony for being fairly comparable in quality... and price, haha. It's also worth pointing out your... age, like... can you control the environment that the display is in? Either way, check the new Alienware QD-OLED, it's setting a new bar, none of us know shit, it's all about to change.

I used a Glossy Qnix 27" 1440p 100hz monitor from around 2015 to 2017 and every monitor since just hasn't looked the same.

I've always thought this. Dave2D speaks my language on this one. To manufacturers and marketers, yes, I do want a glossy screen.

Maybe some people forgot about it, but few years ago there were things called… em… office buildings… classrooms… houses that didn’t look like caves I guess? And you really couldn’t control the light in those vintage places, I think that’s why we don’t have too many glossy options out there.
