@@cybrim1 I was astonished when I heard they claimed the Dark Sun campaign setting was too problematic for rerelease. From the perspective of a very progressive and liberal (whatever label needs to be applied to me) person this was infuriating. The pendulum is swinging too damn far when we cannot get that. But, I believe once we get a psionic class from Arcane Library, we can pull all we want from the original 2e setting. Even if WotC released one it would be horrible.

I really like the idea of the character stable concept. I could totally see homebrewing stables into an actual "guild" mechanic with perks seems like a fun idea.
Definitely! I've seen groups set it up where it's a big group of adventurers who all hang out at the same tavern, or it's a growing team that live in the stronghold of the highest level "sponsor" characters. I absolutely love the idea of it!
I LOVE that you have death metal art, horror elements, OSR mindset. This is so awesome and classic grimdark for the new generation. I originally backed for just the book, but then I saw Vikings in the 3rd scroll so I upped my ante to full premium with all the things. So excited.

5:00 Ooh, I like the sound of two full roll tables for names by ancestry. 10:30 Love that you're future proofing the licensing. 16:00 Definitely like the idea of starting with halving the damage dice and HP of 5e monsters. I just got into ICRPG from 5e and enjoying playing both. My favorite part is doing away with 25ft of movement vs 30 feet: near, far, or out of range is great!

I was watching a stream by Aaron the Pedantic, where he admittedly had not read the starter rules but decided to make a review video anyway. I went back the next day and the comment section was full to the brim where the community politely, yet sternly at times corrected at every misconception during the video. He went back and read the PDF and then did another stream which aired right before your AMA. I believe he did the right thing. He also is going to back it 👊

Another option: submit an adventure to an adventure-writing competition. This way you don't need to sweat making it look super-pretty, and you're guaranteed readers and feedback. Just don't make your own self-assessment dependent on 'success' in the competition.

I just wana say, I haven't paid any attention to your work up to this point, a fault of character I pin on myself and not as an attack on you, so when people kept talking about Shadowdark it seemed like it came out of nowhere to me. But I know that you, me, and people like us tend to put a lot of work into stuff and keep at the grind stone to make things well. So I'm happy for the success you've had so far and wish you further success in the future. I only hope that I could be half as successful or be given a fraction of the grace and chances to myself. Of course having my own dayjob and other obligations distract and detract from the amount of work I might otherwise be able to produce, nonetheless I hope that you enjoy the proud feelings that you deserve for work well done.

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad (and honored!) that it's Rich running that! I was sitting with him last year asking him all sorts of stories about his Stonehell living campaign he ran for ages and kept updated with every single group that went through. It was just about the coolest thing I've ever heard. Such an awesome dude!

You know if it wasn't for all that OGL stuff a while back, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have come across 1/4 of the interesting OSR & alt-WotC channels that ye olde algo has since recommended. And Kelsey's vids are ones I'm glad came up. Plus PDM and QB did the Shadowdark KS a solid. The character creation overview vid was nice as well. Looking forward to my copy!

Oh yes, my wallet is getting quite slim. I've been a fan of Kevin Crawford in the past couple of years, as well as sci fi ttrpgs which of course get short shrift. Didn't have too much interest in 5e or any "e" (I come from BECMI; OG). But my exposure to current OSR was pretty focused and sedate. Then WotC, Has-bros, and OGL. No longer sedate, trying to get back the focused...but gonna fail.
Just bought into my first kickstarter project, guess which one! :P NGL was kind of put off by the weird hype but I watched a few of these videos and Kelsey seems like a proper nerd who is pretty cool, and the quickstart gives vibes of a really well thought out system that plucks from other well thought out systems. I can't wait to see it all in a couple of days!

I totally missed the live stream because of work but absolutely loved it! One question I had was how to go about converting 5e stuff to Shadowdark? HP AC, etc...
A good question! I’m working up some concrete resources/advice for that, but for now, a very swift hack is simply to halve the HP and damage of any 5E creature with 6 hit dice or more, or to replace them one-to-one with their Shadowdark version. Also, removing proficiency bonus is a good way to bring bonuses down to the Shadowdark scale.
Basically if all the problems you face are nails you won't be able to get a Hammer in Shadowdark and when you literally need to deal with a Nail, you are SOL. That is why they added the Warhammer as you are going to war against that nail.

A few months ago I swear I saw the quick start rules being sold in a plastic bag in a local game store. I am kicking myself for not buying it. I didn’t know what it was at the moment.
Then you must be a Las Vegas local, because there is only one FLGS that I know of where it's being sold, and that's my neighborhood FLGS (War Room Games)! :) Unless there's another one out there that I'm not aware of, which would be totally cool!
Yes! I actually calculated this out with averages a few times throughout the game’s development, believe it or not. It would take someone about a year of playing one 3-hour session per week and getting average treasure to go from 1st through 10th level. 👍
Super looking forward to getting the system! OSE didn’t quite land for my table, but I’m hoping this will tickle their 5e sensibilities a bit more. If nothing else it’ll be worth it for the tables (if they’re anything like the quality of the swamp table previewed). I think the funniest thing that I have seen through this kickstarter is that your wife did such a good job with professional level marketing (probably the best I’ve seen in the OSR-ish space) that it is actually turning some hardcore indie people off of the project because it looks too good and is actually being advertised 😂

I looked at the quick start and it looked really fun. I did notice in the equipment list there were iron spikes, which seemed super useful. It seems it would be hard to drive them in by hand, is there like a tool or something in the full version that could work for that?
If only!! There was a universal rift of some kind that caused the known tools for driving iron spikes to be lost to memory. Rumor has it, one of the two fallen gods might know.
Perhaps not what you're looking for, but each of the Zine's seems to be an "Add On" to the KS. So if you were willing to back the KS at some level, say, you could add print+pdf Zine Add-Ons and get them that way.

❤ ❤ ❤ I'm definitely gonna hack your system to pieces and create my own system because I have a Grim Gothic Dark Fantasy Metal vision that's quite a bit darker than your own default setting.. An approaching apocalypse weird fantasy mix of Moorcocks Eternal Champion cycle, Lovecraft, Dante, Milton, Warhammer Fantasy, D&D, Mork Borg and the book of Revelations meets ShadowDark. I've been reading the last beta I am genuinely excited for you it's a great format and I love the tonality and feeling of the rules, I'm definitely supporting this Kickstarter even if I'm going to butcher it like a manic slasher at a lakefront summer camp because I want to add a bit more crunch and nuance, sort of an Advanced ShadowDark version with a bit more Hardcore 5e (which I think you also have something to do with) and adding a DCC mighty feats rule, but I'm definitely in love with the framework and useful ideas, plus the beautiful looking books and cool Zines means I'm picking up both editions of the core rules as a keepsake. Congratulations, here's to hoping we see a lot more great stuff from you in the future. Also Dark Sun is my favorite TSR setting by a long shot, not to mention how can anyone not love Brom! so this is nice to hear you talk about it.

I think you could with some tweaks! Although I also anticipate we’ll see a lot of dedicated versions and ideas coming from the third party community. Already a few cool options out there!
Right now, it looks like items will begin shipping to backers in July! That's assuming there are no major delays that can't be foreseen (always have to throw that caveat since I haven't mastered my crystal-ball reading, haha). Digital versions will ship to all backers as soon as the Kickstarter clears and allows me to release downloads (early April)!
Nothing concrete right now, but I’m exploring all options! We proofed a softcover version, and because the book is really long, it was a bit unwieldy and the spine cracked really badly even with heavyweight cover stock. Still sorting out a good approach! Might have to go with thinner interior paper to help the spine.

I looked at the quick start and it looked really fun. I did notice in the equipment list there were iron spikes, which seemed super useful. It seems it would be hard to drive them in by hand, is there like a tool or something in the full version that could work for that?
If only!! There was a universal rift of some kind that caused the known tools for driving iron spikes to be lost to memory. Rumor has it, one of the two fallen gods might know.

Perhaps not what you're looking for, but each of the Zine's seems to be an "Add On" to the KS.
So if you were willing to back the KS at some level, say, you could add print+pdf Zine Add-Ons and get them that way.
I really hope you do a psionics supplement. Been a fan of psionics since 2e!

❤ ❤ ❤ I'm definitely gonna hack your system to pieces and create my own system because I have a Grim Gothic Dark Fantasy Metal vision that's quite a bit darker than your own default setting.. An approaching apocalypse weird fantasy mix of Moorcocks Eternal Champion cycle, Lovecraft, Dante, Milton, Warhammer Fantasy, D&D, Mork Borg and the book of Revelations meets ShadowDark. I've been reading the last beta I am genuinely excited for you it's a great format and I love the tonality and feeling of the rules, I'm definitely supporting this Kickstarter even if I'm going to butcher it like a manic slasher at a lakefront summer camp because I want to add a bit more crunch and nuance, sort of an Advanced ShadowDark version with a bit more Hardcore 5e (which I think you also have something to do with) and adding a DCC mighty feats rule, but I'm definitely in love with the framework and useful ideas, plus the beautiful looking books and cool Zines means I'm picking up both editions of the core rules as a keepsake. Congratulations, here's to hoping we see a lot more great stuff from you in the future. Also Dark Sun is my favorite TSR setting by a long shot, not to mention how can anyone not love Brom! so this is nice to hear you talk about it.

Could you create rangers, barbarians, druids, etc using the current core Classes?
I think you could with some tweaks! Although I also anticipate we’ll see a lot of dedicated versions and ideas coming from the third party community. Already a few cool options out there!
How long after the kickstarter ends will the items ship? Also when will the digital version be available?
Right now, it looks like items will begin shipping to backers in July! That's assuming there are no major delays that can't be foreseen (always have to throw that caveat since I haven't mastered my crystal-ball reading, haha). Digital versions will ship to all backers as soon as the Kickstarter clears and allows me to release downloads (early April)!

Are there plans to have a softcover/hardcover print on demand version available some time after the book is out?
Nothing concrete right now, but I’m exploring all options! We proofed a softcover version, and because the book is really long, it was a bit unwieldy and the spine cracked really badly even with heavyweight cover stock. Still sorting out a good approach! Might have to go with thinner interior paper to help the spine.
