      Where to buy this?

  • @Ryan-jp2jb
    @Ryan-jp2jb ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Conceptually I'd love something like this! But there's quite a few things I wish were different - leaving some feedback here in the hopes of buying a future version :)
    I think using guyline, notoriously easy to trip on, next to a spinning blade is an accident waiting to happen - if a sudden strong gust of wind or pet causes it topple over, it'll break the blades. Please just make the next version some kinda telescopic tripod you can nail into the ground you don't store inside it - the weight/size is worth it.
    I think the blades should be at least enclosed in some kinda metal mesh - it'll stop the blades if they break away, stop them from breaking if it falls over, not make it a general hazard, prevent it from slicing any wires and give you something to grab when stopping it.
    The cost is wayyy too high - I get this is coming from a start-up, but when a 100W solar panel is like 100, I really couldn't justify the 350 for this 40W alternative.
    I don't think this needs to come with a battery if it ups the cost - I'd rather plug in my own external battery (which most people have camping anyway) - I wouldn't expect this to come with it.

      Hello Ryan, Thanks for your feedback! We're always looking for ways in which we can improve our next version of Shine, so we'll be sure to pass your comments along to our team. Please find some comments in response to your suggestions below:
      We do plan to develop alternative mounting solutions in the future so stay tuned! It's good to hear that weight/size is not as important to you as our next mounting system will likely not be able to fit inside Shine. We did explore a tripod in the past, however, we found that the pegs in the ground and tensioned guy wires give Shine much more stability as tripod designs often topple over in high winds. That said, we may revisit a tripod design in the future.
      A metal mesh could be interesting. However, we're not sure how something like that would impact the turbine's efficiency. Certainly, something for us to research! For safety, we tell customers that Shine's blades should be replaced after 2000 hours of operation or every 2 years. Our turbine does have a built-in brake and LED to notify users if wind speeds are too strong. This allows folks to take down their turbine before conditions reach a point that could put Shine's blades at risk. We also always recommend folks inspect their blades for any damage prior to using their turbine.
      Shine is a highly engineered product made by our small but mighty team in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is both a wind turbine charger and power bank with a built-in charge management controller and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) so it can generate the most power from the wind regardless of changes in wind speed. We manufacture in low volumes right now but as we scale prices could change.
      It's good to know that you would be interested in a version of Shine without an internal battery. We do hope to offer this eventually. The reason we opted for an internal battery was so folks could have the option to store the power they generated from the wind for later use.
      Thanks again for all your feedback. It will certainly help inform the development of future models of Shine. Have a great day and take care!

    Off topic question about this product: When the internal battery finally goes bad(as in unable to store energy) can it be replaced with a new one? If it can not be replaced, will the turbine be able to still charge a external battery even though it can't store anymore energy internally?

    • @shineturbine
      @shineturbine  ปีที่แล้ว

      At this time, our battery is not replaceable by customers and the turbine will not be able to charge an external battery without it. This is because its internal circuit boards which regulate the power generated from the wind rely on the internal battery to operate.

      @@shineturbine No offense, I do believe in this product and want to buy this product, but the battery should be replaceable whether by you(through paid service for repair) or by customer. Mainly I don't feel ok that if I spend all that money, place it in storage and it stops working when I need it or decide to finally use it. Please make it changeable like a cordless drill motor for version 2 or something, that's just faulty/wasteful of material off the start(even if it last 5 years). • @brucemurray2520
    @brucemurray2520 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks interesting. Here are some comments based on my experience.
    Having the battery in an enclosed, unvented, black enclosure without heat sinks will cause the battery life to be dramatically reduced when used in most areas. Maybe not in Canada but even a winter day in Southern California black surfaces can become very hot. During the summer they can become untouchable. This is a very common problem all-in-one solar powered powerbanks experience.
    Also placing a wind turbine near the ground is a safety and performance problem. Wind at the surface is very variable in both speed and direction. It isn't untill 10ft AGL that things settle a little bit. Variable wind conditions will rapidly wear the moving parts on this unit.
    Your video should show some kind of a barrier/safety zone around your unit. Some kid will walk, at head height, into those spinning blades. Just like people regularly walk into the rear helicopter rotor. And they can point to your TH-cam setup videos as evidence of neglect.

    • @shineturbine
      @shineturbine  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Bruce!
      Thanks for your comment. Please find our answers below:
      1. Shine has a built-in heat sink, brake, and temperature regulation. Extra heat is dumped through the heat sink and the turbine will also communicate to users audibly and visually with LEDs if it needs to be taken down due to temperatures being outside of its operating range.
      2. It is a common misconception that wind speeds are greatly compromised as you get closer to the ground. Interestingly enough, existing wind forecasting tools typically identify a region’s wind speed data relatively close to the ground, at around a 10-meter altitude!
      Shine, with a deployment height of approximately one meter above ground level, would have no more than 2% to 3% reduction of the forecasted wind speeds due to turbulence increase. Shine's highly adaptable design is well equipped to operate in turbulent wind flow. The compact swept area of the turbine, although large enough to produce necessary power, has an automatic yaw that consistently tracks into the fluctuating path of the wind, regardless of turbulence and gusts.
      Large wind turbines are unable to properly function in turbulence due to their size and electro-mechanical yaw, which is why they're built so high off the ground - to access the most laminar wind flow. The main consideration for ideal wind speeds, or “clean air”, while at ground level is the deployed turbine’s proximity to disruptive terrains. To mitigate “ground friction”, the turbine should not be set up behind a tree, in a ditch, or in other sheltered areas.
      3. Our product user manual and packaging explicitly state that Shine is not a toy and should never be left unattended or used in locations where people walk, children play, or pets are at risk.
      Thanks for your feedback, Bruce. Have a great day and take care!
