  • Welcome to my boat building channel! This is my trawler restoration of an Albin 27 pocket trawler. Every couple of weeks I post a boat building or boat repair video to document various boat projects, sailboat restorations, or boat repairs.
    This episode I explain how I build an ultra lightweight dinghy for my trawler using composite boat building materials and fiberglass. This dinghy weighs less than 80 pounds. You may be familiar with Sampson Boat Co and all sorts of wooden boat building. But not all boat building is done in wood. This is a great cheap boat building project that will improve your boat building and fiberglass skills

    The Albin 27 was a pilothouse yacht manufactured in the New England area of the United States from approximately 1983 to 1992. There were reportedly 500-600 of these boats manufactured. The Albin 27 is trailerable and weighed approximately 6,500 pounds from the factory. It is a true pocket trawler with a forward and aft cabin, galley, head, and pilothouse helm.

    Great project. I love the result. I think that the balance between nice woodwork and weeks of maintenance is key. Every year I find myself missing the best sailing because I'm refinishing the brightwork instead of putting the boat in the water.

      Jeff : I think you and I think alike. The ease of maintenance on composite materials coupled with some accent teak or bright work makes a great combination that is timeless and easy to manage.

    We had one of these dinks several years back with the original flotation. It sank. Nice safe useful modification

    I built a 9 foot that is 43 pounds. In fact I built 2 and I built an 11 foot that is 50 Pounds. I think yours is prettier but mine has an advantage for those that want to access waters by foot or without a boat ramp. I suppose mine are not dinghy's but rather row boats.

      Some projects in my videos were completed long before my TH-cam channel. But don’t worry there’s lots more work to do. You should definitely check out the Live Stream from the Boat Werks. Be sure to Watch the Albin 27 Playlist to take the channel to the next level. Then all your dreams will come true. Thanks again for your support

    Your davit is a nice design but if you made the base with a pin to rotate you could tip the arms towards the bow and gain more height

    Very informative video. I like the references to your other videos detailing the materials used. Could you make the pictures of the videos clickable links?

      Sorry TH-cam doesn’t allow me to successfully do that across all platforms. But you can easily find the links by going to my TH-cam Channel and watching the playlists. Thanks for your comment😁be sure to subscribe and spread the word

    The dinghy looks great! Where did you buy the PVC board you used for the toe rail?

    • @motorcityboatwerks
      @motorcityboatwerks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark: Try a 2” x1” piece of extruded pvc trim stock which you might find at a big box store. While not exactly the same as pvc foam board in certain applications it’s a close enough substitute

    I just love finding beat up things and restoring them. Great job, Sir! If i might make one little comment about your blog. When you do a transition or interruption you throw up that color thing on the screen...followed by a piercing beep. Maybe it is my age...but it jars my senses every time and i find it unnerving. Please don't do that.

    Hey Joe, I'll subscribe to your channel if you remove the annoying beep sound in the video. It really hurts my ears especially when wearing headphones. Good information though.

    Great build... but keep your face out of the camera. Focus the camera more on what you are doing and how you are doing it rather you....
