Excellent taste in music, sir! I watched this as a refresher since it's been a few years since I installed a head unit on a 3rd gen. I was going to go with something higher end, but this is pretty much the only head unit under $500 that has a physical volume knob.
thats the reason i got this unit over other ones. i have to have that knob or i'd loose my mind! just like some vehicles having touch screen hvac controls, fuck that shit.
I just put one in my 97 Camry, didn't think it would make so big of a difference but it sounds sooo much better than the stock stereo. Sony is one of the best audio companies out there from car stereos to bluetooth speakers to headphones, they have unmatched clarity.
Mines won’t power on any help? It turns on when I take solid orange wire and put it on any other wire.. but no audio.. and thing is I have a orange with white line on one and orange solid on the other…
Where did you find those two plugs that you needed for the stereo wires at about the 5 min mark And what did you do with the other wires that were there for the original stereo? Thanks. Currently putting this exact stereo in my Toyota.
There is a factory amp that’s no longer used once you put the new stereo in. The plugs were plugged into the amp. I left the amp in place incase I wanted to put the factory unit back in if I ever get rid of the car.
Haha. Unfortunately this one doesn’t have any usb plugs on the back of the unit. The Only option for apple CarPlay is to plug it into the front. I have switched to a black cord though. :)
Thanks for the video! Do you still find maps to be useful with having to look down to the right? I’m wondering if it’s worth installing in my 4 runner or just getting a phone mount that I can place up higher.
I do still find it useful but mostly when out on a trip or off-road. I’ll Have Gaia gps up on the radio and use my phone for something else like monitoring trans temp or controlling cameras .
HI, I just bought this radio today. After installation on my Nissan Navara D40, sound is perfect. Only problem is bluetooth hands free issue. When call on handsfree option, the sounds is so low that I can't hear anything and the mic is not that good either as feedback from other side. Do you have same issue? Or my unit could be faulty?
My hands free works great, I use it everyday . There are two volumes to adjust.. While your on the phone call make sure the volume on your phone is turned up, once that’s turned all the way up then you can adjust the volume with the knob on the radio. 2). For your feed back issue make sure your mic isn’t too close to a speaker I have my mic mounted on the sun visor . Good luck I hope you get it figured out!
@@smallengine just curious as if your sound got worse after the install? I installed this one in my 03 mustang with the Mach 460 system. The sound is horrible. I’ve been messing with EQ and can’t get it to sound as clear as the stock radio. Im ready to return this thing
Also is the amplifier hooked up to anything? And how do you connect the parking brake wire? What did you do with the extra purple wire that is labeled "Reverse In" Sorry for the questions. Just confused but need some help
The amp is abandoned so you could remove it if you want. The “reverse in” is for a backup camera. If you have a backup camera the wire Needs to be hooked to the reverse gear selector wire harness someplace. I don’t have a camera so I didn’t hook it up. Parking brake wire can just be tied into the switch for the parking brake or if you want to cheat you could tie it into ground . It may change when some functions are available so make sure to test it before you put everything back together .

The home button is the only thing that’s lit up besides the screen and it’s white. And you can’t change the color of it. The volume knob doesn’t have any lights
I mounted the mic on the visor and tucked the wire behind the plastic for the pillar near the windshield . Once I got down to the bottom of the dash I tucked it up under the dash and ran it over to the stereo. I little bit of a hassle but not too bad.
Do you feel like it’s awkward to grab the volume knob with the usb head just below the knob? Edit: I’ve bought one and installed it and can confirm the volume knob is ace
I was just wondering as well, I noticed that every time I turn my stereo or car on, my antenna goes up even when i’m not listening to the radio. But before, with the factory stereo it would only come up if I pressed the radio button and would go down if I pressed anything else. Is there something I did wrong?
I don’t think so.. my power antenna has never worked so I’m not sure how it should react with the new stereo. But I’m guessing it’s just how the new stereo works.
That's a great question. I have yet to install this in my Vette, but I will no doubt face the same issue. There is no on/off switch for this unit...powers on with the vehicle. I will be getting it professionally installed come spring and will see what they can do. If no fix, then quite the bummer.
My gf just got a 99 and were going to do the same unit, my question for you is what type of phone mount do you have? Ours went on the ac vent for a pop socket but it doesn't fit the vents on the runner, is yours just a 3m stick anywhere mount?
Yep you can mount it anywhere there is a Relatively flat surface. it’s made by mpow . I have found that if it’s out in the sun on a hot day it will come lose. I just re-stick it when it cools off and it seems fine.
I ordered through crutchfield and they tell you what harness you need and send it with for around $20. You don’t necessarily need it but it makes the install a lot faster and cleaner.
Yes you should. The only thing you need it for is watching movies on the screen. If the stereo doesn’t see the parking brake signal it blocks video playback.

I’m actually in the middle of moving so The 4runner is stored about 60 miles away from me right now. I probably won’t have it back home until mid August. But when I get it back I’d be happy to try it.

That’s Not an option on mine unless they have updated it. Mine is just stuck in the up position. I planned on swapping it out it putting another switch in but I haven’t done anything with it.

No it seems fine on my 3rd gen. But the radio sits a little lower than in most vehicles so I’m actually reaching down to turn up the volume .

If you want to use apple CarPlay the phone has to be plugged in. But you can use maps and listen to music at the same time.

I think they all have it. I have run into some issues using cheap cords.

Had this unit installed by a 3rd party , and the unit seems to drain the battery over night. Installed on a 2005 Dodge Dakota.
That sucks.. does everything work ok otherwise? I wonder if they messed up the constant power wire.

A year on how is the unit working?
It’s still working great! I spend a lot of time off road and even with all the vibration and dust I haven’t had any issues.
How did you handle the automatic antenna?
I plan to swap it out with a fixed antenna but haven’t yet, it’s just in the up position all the time.

Yep! I ran the wire up behind the a pillar and clipped the microphone to the sun visor . It works great
