it's almost as if your voices took a time machine back to 1967 ..they sound just as awesome today as 55 plus years ago....simply amazing job guys!

Wow, nobody ever sounds that close to the original after years, let alone decades. One of my favorite "nuggets" of that era. Thanks for sharing! This blew me away!

This is absolutely fantastic. I just heard this song again tonight on Sirius Garage. I first thought it was "Louie, Louie." I have not heard this in more years than I care to remember!!! Beautiful and very well done! This is part of the history of USA rock-and-roll.

This song was one of the great forgotten "classics" of the mid 60's. When looking for it some years back, I vaguely remembered I first knew it by somebody other than the Ohio Express, but when I obtained the OhioX version of it, it was exactly what I remembered!
Rare Breed....yeah, that rings a bell! From '65, huh? That seems right too.
FYI, my research of the Ohio Express version shows it charted in very late '67.
Thanks for the memories of a GREAT song.

For the first time in my life, TODAY, I heard this song on Sirius 60’s channel and fell in love with it.
And to top it off, I am going through a tough break up and this song makes it so much easier to NOT go back to him.
Song is now on my playlist lol.
    Thanks guys!

I came here after Tim Corwin (drummer for Ohio Express) appeared on the American Pickers TV show (March 11, 2019). I was curious about the back story on Ohio Express and learned about Rare Breed. So glad you put up your video and clarified the circumstances behind "Beg, Borrow, and Steal." You guys still sound great!

Great to find this video. I found the song today on Spotify on a playlist inspired by Jay and the Americans. When I saw Ohio Express listed I thought No Way!! John, you had such a sweet and soulful voice back then and the harmony is great. Hope you've been able to enjoy your gift all these years. Wish you could have capitalized on your exposure in 1965/6.

Surprising, but I don't remember ever hearing it played on WSAI or WKRC in Cincinnati in the late '60s and I was a teenager who listened to the radio a lot. However, years later in California, I bought the NUGGETS boxed set of forgotten oldies (on six CDs) and heard this song in that collection. It was one of the few real pleasant surprises among those songs. Thanks!

John and Barry, It's songs like this that made me get excited about music, the gems that lie below the surface of the alleged Top 10. I listened to the smaller radio stations for these killer tunes that didn't get the push they should have from the record companies, and therefore were lower on the charts. Anyone who listens to the vibrato and timbre of your voice would have to agree that you were the real lead singer, John! The guitar solo is undeniable, too. Who would learn how to hybrid pick a solo from over 50 years ago? Thanks for sharing the story, and thumbs down to Kasenetz Katz and the other deceivers that didn't give you credit. Rock on, guys! You're not too old to produce a follow-up single!

"Beg Borrow and Steal" is a great song. I never knew it was done by another band than the Ohio Express but I knew that it sounded different from the bubblegum pop they are known for (this sounds like garage rock but the name "Ohio Express" labels it as bubblegum rock). I love meeting the guys, and hearing them sing. !965? Geez, that Summer I saw Dylan come on stage on a hot July night at Newport with his electric guitar and change popular music. You can see me with Judy Collins on stage that Afternoon, at a Workshop. The picture was on the back page of the first section of the Providence Journal the next day, and I still have my Evening Concert, Row 8, Center ticket! And my MGB, that I drove up from Baltimore in, and lived in for a week.

Good to get the back story. I liked this song when it came out. There were so many 1-4-5 songs patterned after Louie, Louie that had their own merit. Hang On Sloopy, that was really by an Ohio band, is a great example, but was also borrowed from an earlier R&B version by the Vibrations called My Girl Sloopy. Funny how music worked back then.

For years I only knew this as an Ohio Express song, then I heard the Nuggets album which had it under the name of the Rare Breed. I was shocked because I could instantly tell it was the same recording. I'd also noticed for years that the voices sounded nothing like the singers of the Ohio Express hits. I'm so glad to finally know who was who and who wasn't.

75lester, on the TWO records, Beg Borrow and Steal on the Attack label (The Rare Breed), and Cameo Parkway label (The Ohio Express), the only difference is the label. We are the performers on both. John played a Gretch guitar, and I played a Farfisa Combo Compact electic organ. Don't recall the amps in the recording studio, or any fuzzpedals. These were singles, so we don't know anything else about other songs on the BB&S album. Hope this answered your question, and thanks for your post.

Beg Borrow or Steal can be enjoyed if your 6 or 106 years, when done like this. Signed a Fan In San Antonio Texas.

John and Barry I have to say of all the songs I have heard from the mid 1960's this song is truly a very true mid 1960's song - one of the best from that era. I was only 5 years old back then but know a good one when I hear it. Can you tell me if the video of Dick Clark's American Bandstand with this song in the background was indeed your song being played ? The mid sixties was probably one of the coolest time periods ever. Love the bob hairdo's and ribbon's the girls wore and the straight leg levis with madras shirts and v neck sweaters the guy's wore - a classic era - just wish I could have been a teenager then and play in a garage rock band.

I just read on the jacket notes of a bubblegum compilation record (Put out by Buddah Records) that Joe Walsh sang with The Rare Breed before he made it big with The Eagles, then as a solo artist. At least that's what Buddah claims. Is this story true? I figured you would know, since you actually WERE in The Rare Breed. Please write back! Thanks for your great music! Thanks for all the enlightenment on this great song. The wikipedia article on Ohio Ex says the Cameo release was remixed. Confirm? It does seem to sound a little better.
So a key to all this is that The Ohio Express was not a group, but a name belonging to Super K Productions.
I put this song on a level with Five O'Clock World and The Vogues.

Joe Walsh was not in the Rare Breed, he was in a group called the Measles from Kent, Ohio. They slapped their stuff on the Ohio Express album. As a matter of fact, the B-side of Beg Borrow and Steal (under the Ohio Express name) is Maybe (an instrumental). The album version is called "I Think I Find Of You," which was actually the Measles with Joe Walsh singing. It seems the Ohio Express wound up being a compliation of groups under one name... at least for their first album!
