The Netflix version makes Spike a very standard martial arts fighter. But there was far more CHARACTERIZATION in how Spike fights in the anime. You see his personality come through in how he expresses a very nonchalant, lackadaisical attitude during fights. But you see that he doesn't just no martial art, but he's identifiable as a martial arts enthusiast, because he will go so far as to critique an opponent's technique in the middle of a fight, and break down the methodology behind certain moves, like having to "be like water"
It's hard to compare the physical limits of reality to a character who's written on a page. Obviously it couldn't be as fast paced and so i like it for what it is

I don't think Spike ever killed a bounty in the anime. They would sometimes die trying to escape him, but Spike didn't have to be told not to kill bounties. In the first scene of Knocking on Heaven's Door, Spike doesn't even draw a weapon until a bounty takes a hostage and forces him to use lethal force rather than just beating them up

Now I have a lot of problems with this adaptation, but something I do appreciate is the martial arts aspect. The anime was clearly inspired by Bruce Lee, where as the live action feels more Jackie Chan esque
If they make another season, they just need to speed up the moves more, that's the main issue, it would look great, but this is decent, if what they wanted was to make homage to classic martial arts films.
Its funny cus i actually like it. These are fantastic sequences. Its not overly polished has its flaws but thats what makes it better for me at least. This show was done with love and charm. People expect everything to be perfect nowadays. Tv stunts back then lacked so much but they had charm to it.
I get why not many people like this adaptation (including me), because it was sold out as an "faithful" adaptation and failed, but at least works on its own, and I really like the action sequences

My only complaint is that we only saw Hakim’s real face for like less than a minute. Like bruh, I wanna see the real Hakim with the Afro! Not discount Jesse Eisenberg!
John and mustafa actually did a good job or at least what they were given if they did it differently and showed what they did before the beginning of the original anime and the episodes were shorter It would have made the show a lot better in my opinion
The character Spike could really have benefitted from fight scenes filmed a la John Wick, but I guess they didnt have the stunt work and choreography chops to pull that Off and are fayling to cover that with the usual tired tricks.

I will say this much for the show. One thing it remains true to is that Spike Spiegel is a great fighter. And that's definitely a must for any adaptation. Even in this show, he's formidable with martial arts and weapons.
These scenes are pretty dope for what they are and some more cowboy bebop fights and action set pieces are cool to see but I think in the Anime Spike always distinctly looks like he's winning,does impressive feats or giving a great fight he only loses 4 times two with surprises one with Eds dad he chose to fight instead of kill, heart grab, The ending because he one man army'd his way out, . The show gives the impression that no one can keep up with Spikes Athletic ability,his fluidity his, surprising power,his experience.Anime Spike just looks cooler like a mix between Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee in control,confident very fluid and heavy IQ. In this show it's more that Spike is like a Muay Thai Capoiera Wing Chun guy who doesn't look like he hits as hard still fun fights but it feels very familiar but not quite like the samething

Man, look its not the best...but How can people say this is TERRIBLE?? This is pretty damn good, and the show itself is an excellent live action interpretation of the Cowboy bebop World..Makes me excited for Gundam live action!!
Cho was injured through the entire show's production. The cuts were because he had to take a break after each scene. They should've just waited until he healed.
I don't understand why people hated this series, add its mistakes, but if they would have allowed for season 2 to happen, season 2 would have made up for all the mistakes that the first season made season 2 would have been it's redemption and trust me, they would have fixed everything they ruined and the show would have ended up better than it already was. Ok, I had a lot of differences, had a lot of things that were definitely not related to the series or things that were changed, but it was still fun to watch And I'm still pissed off at the people who are mad at Daniela pean, Ada, because she didn't look exactly like fame, people were just mad because they didn't have a live action version of faye to jerk off to. However, her humor was perfect. Season 2, we would have seen her dramatic side, which would have given her more respect or admiration. As an actress and more as a person.. I also feel bad about the electric who is gonna play, Edward, she only got to play Edward and the ending of the season finale and was never able to be Edward ever again, and she had potential she had all the qualifications to be Edward, the humor, the behavior that hyper that crazy, hyper goofy behavior, yet still be a super genius. We never got to see any of that, because the majority were unsatisfied weaboos who wanted the series to be exactly like the anime when this is for general audience, for people who has seen the enemy, or I've never seen the anime at all. if you have a problem that it's not accurate to the anime, then just watch the anime, if you like the live action, watch the live action if you love both like I do go for it
I personally don’t think anyone could properly play Spike Spiegel. Cho is passable but they needed someone who is effortlessly cool to really do this character justice.
Cause Netflix are idiots. But if you really think about it it's a win win. Let's say the show was actually good and successful that's a win. If it's bad it makes fans appreciate the original more. New fans that like this adaptation can discover the original as well. So whether this adaptation is a success or not doesn't matter, what matters is making a 1998 Anime relevant in this day and age.
@@dan18503 where in recent memory? Anime Bebop had long, single take bits that emulated 80s Hong Kong fights. Given prop use and safety, neither this or fan made shortages can emulate that intensity over an entire series.
It’s because they have better stunt teams and fight choreographers. And Cho needs a few more months to better his form. He doesn’t have the fluidity that Spike had. Spike fought more like Bruce Lee and used a Jeet Kune Do techniques. Cho is more basic martial artists. Even his time on the Wing Chung dummy looks stiff and a bit awkward.

John Cho nailed it as spike, people say he's too old but, think of it, it would make more sense, cowboy bebop is about a mature show that tackles the past, wouldn't it make more sense if spike experienced alot during his younger years? plus the actions scenes were not bad, it's actually great, the anime is exaggerated in the fight scenes but it's still good, and John's voice really sounds like spike
There is some fine cinematography (especially the one-take flashback) here, good style and great moves and its obvious John Cho really put a lot of effort into the role... but there is something off about the editing, like it needed to be a bit snappier and less choppy. There are many instances where they conclude a move, freeze for half a second, then do the next one. I get that these are real humans as opposed to animated characters and humans have limitations but isn't editing there to work around these limitations?
John Cho just didn’t have the athletic ability for these fights. The editing and choreography is solid but he’s too stiff. I honestly think Spike’s fights are the only part of this show that deserves the criticism. The rest of the show was decent and the actors portrayed the characters personalities competently and had charisma. Still better than iron fist
So he would also look nothing like the character as well as be a bad stiff actor? I mean Spike’s entire look was modeled after Yusaku Matsuda. So why would they get a Caucasian person to play him?
I honestly love john cho as spike also jet they really nailed it the characters from anime & manga. Even the story was good they didn't change it only twisted. The only i hate in this adoptation was the wrong writing story of some important character like example faye she's badass with attitutde not spoiled brat, vicious from calm character became a character always screaming, ed looks like cosplay woman. & last julia, there is no problem if she's villlain here becoz in anime & manga "she's like angel from underworld or the devil from paradice" that's faye line. But she's not weak, she's not scared to death & She's strong person.
But the real Julia saved Spike's life. She was always protecting him. She was hunted for years because she wouldn't kill him to save herself. The change betrays her character. Faye's line is about how beautiful and dangerous Julia is. It's not about Julia being evil. Julia even stopped mid chase to give Faye a getaway rid. She was nicer to Faye than any other character aside from Gren.

The choreography is good but the main problem is the Camera work/editing (their are some weird angles that they choose) and the speed of the fights. You can tell the performers put in the work for the fight scenes but I think they needed more time to get their moves down better.
@EYX LCY and the jet actor looks like he could do all spike does but better, which shouldnt be the case and rather the opposite really. Jet is old, spike is young, not the other way around.
@EYX LCY his youth is emphasized many times throughout the show, as he is running from his dark childhood which is right around the corner, in this it seems like he has had like 20 years to run from his past demons. He uses his carefree attitude to mask the trauma he's experienced and also a younger actor may have been capable of some of spike's more fluid and crazy moves. He mostly uses kicks in the original in a way that I have not seen translated well into this show, which is a shame because he had an awesome fighting style originally.
@EYX LCY it shows he is running from RECENT events because he grew up and was influences by the people he is running from. Him being old in this makes it so that it is something far behind him and that he has likely moved on from it. IE the wounds arent fresh.
It was so painful how bad a job the writers did of keeping a consistent tone. It was jarring and it's too bad because the cast and performances were pretty great.
Camera framing is very wrong. Netflix, go higher Asian coriographers. Those who filmed Jackie Chan fight scenes to be exact, I think they were from Taiwan. Do not use weird angles in these fight scenes, unless the mood requires it. It does not, especially with the lighting. The framing should've went like this. Before Ed and Guy in White Suit rested, the fight before that shouldn't have been framed for the camera to switch subjects. Instead, should have panned from left to right as Ed gets pushed to the wall. After that, the camera would be viewing the subjects from the left-waist level-back facing upwards towards the two before being dragged along as ED gets pinned to the wall. Avoid any instantaneous switches every second or so to avoid confusion. Frame them all and pan to the direction of the fight. Do not do close-ups as it makes things too tight and too vague for the viewers. Give them enough space to breathe without losing the boxes setting/atmosphere. And in that scene where Ed tries to avoid getting shot by pushing the gun away... The camera should've been viewing the subjects from back left before getting the close-up that goes from left-over-right. But before this, the Camera before the gun was involved, should've slowly travelled from the left side of the room, from the right side to the back left of the subject as they moved towards the sink. This would give a definite idea of the space they are fighting in and more things to view. Like, just from that scene, I could already tell this was trash by comparison. Like, compare Old Jackie Chan movie fight scenes to this. You'll notice the huge difference in quality to the point where you'll start to question wether the camera crew were pros or just amateurs. And I'm not even a pro camera guy, I just like watching Jackie Chan movies. And if I can tell that, who knows what the Camera crew behind Jackie Chan is thinking right now.
Messy Live Action, didn't really like it but that's not the actors fault. They really did their best. John Cho be looking fine af in this though. 👀 Had to rewind that wing chun dummy scene a few times. 💋

Cowboy is damn realistic ! Not junk about sentient robots, AI is just automation and that has nothing to do with sentience, sentience requires life in order to exist in a body. Also, another cool thing I like is its realistic technologies ! No laser pistols, just normally bullets cuz they are simply better in reality ! You need a huge installation/generator just for a laser rifle in reality which makes laser worthless and ineffective. And yeah, their weapons and stuff/tech is mostly like what we have just a little more better and certain liberties.

Honestly for me, Cho was a great SS.
I didn't love the show, but I think he nailed the character. The whole trio's chemistry felt pretty true to the source material.
Yeah he did really good and not just working with he had. Solid SS indeed. Thought him and Mustafah (Jet) were the best part of the show.

Cho was injured through the entire show's production. The cuts were because he had to take a break after each scene. They should've just waited until he healed.
I don't understand why people hated this series, add its mistakes, but if they would have allowed for season 2 to happen, season 2 would have made up for all the mistakes that the first season made season 2 would have been it's redemption and trust me, they would have fixed everything they ruined and the show would have ended up better than it already was. Ok, I had a lot of differences, had a lot of things that were definitely not related to the series or things that were changed, but it was still fun to watch
And I'm still pissed off at the people who are mad at Daniela pean, Ada, because she didn't look exactly like fame, people were just mad because they didn't have a live action version of faye to jerk off to.
However, her humor was perfect. Season 2, we would have seen her dramatic side, which would have given her more respect or admiration. As an actress and more as a person..
I also feel bad about the electric who is gonna play, Edward, she only got to play Edward and the ending of the season finale and was never able to be Edward ever again, and she had potential she had all the qualifications to be Edward, the humor, the behavior that hyper that crazy, hyper goofy behavior, yet still be a super genius. We never got to see any of that, because the majority were unsatisfied weaboos who wanted the series to be exactly like the anime when this is for general audience, for people who has seen the enemy, or I've never seen the anime at all.
if you have a problem that it's not accurate to the anime, then just watch the anime, if you like the live action, watch the live action if you love both like I do go for it

I personally don’t think anyone could properly play Spike Spiegel. Cho is passable but they needed someone who is effortlessly cool to really do this character justice.

Cause Netflix are idiots. But if you really think about it it's a win win. Let's say the show was actually good and successful that's a win. If it's bad it makes fans appreciate the original more. New fans that like this adaptation can discover the original as well. So whether this adaptation is a success or not doesn't matter, what matters is making a 1998 Anime relevant in this day and age.

@@dan18503 where in recent memory? Anime Bebop had long, single take bits that emulated 80s Hong Kong fights. Given prop use and safety, neither this or fan made shortages can emulate that intensity over an entire series.
It’s because they have better stunt teams and fight choreographers. And Cho needs a few more months to better his form. He doesn’t have the fluidity that Spike had. Spike fought more like Bruce Lee and used a Jeet Kune Do techniques. Cho is more basic martial artists. Even his time on the Wing Chung dummy looks stiff and a bit awkward.

EVen thou their were some problems with the tv show i still loved the action scenes even more the anime, this would have been a really good anime adaptation if it weren't for the problems, especially that song that plays in the background is possibly my favorite cowboy bebop song ever made and im glad they made it because its just so awesome!!!!!!!!!

The episode with Pierrot Le Fou was really the only thing that upset me. That was my favorite episode and it felt rushed, but everything else I liked.

John Cho nailed it as spike, people say he's too old but, think of it, it would make more sense, cowboy bebop is about a mature show that tackles the past, wouldn't it make more sense if spike experienced alot during his younger years? plus the actions scenes were not bad, it's actually great, the anime is exaggerated in the fight scenes but it's still good, and John's voice really sounds like spike

Why do the fights feel slowed down?
There is some fine cinematography (especially the one-take flashback) here, good style and great moves and its obvious John Cho really put a lot of effort into the role... but there is something off about the editing, like it needed to be a bit snappier and less choppy. There are many instances where they conclude a move, freeze for half a second, then do the next one. I get that these are real humans as opposed to animated characters and humans have limitations but isn't editing there to work around these limitations?

John Cho just didn’t have the athletic ability for these fights. The editing and choreography is solid but he’s too stiff. I honestly think Spike’s fights are the only part of this show that deserves the criticism. The rest of the show was decent and the actors portrayed the characters personalities competently and had charisma. Still better than iron fist

I honestly love john cho as spike also jet they really nailed it the characters from anime & manga. Even the story was good they didn't change it only twisted. The only i hate in this adoptation was the wrong writing story of some important character like example faye she's badass with attitutde not spoiled brat, vicious from calm character became a character always screaming, ed looks like cosplay woman. & last julia, there is no problem if she's villlain here becoz in anime & manga "she's like angel from underworld or the devil from paradice" that's faye line. But she's not weak, she's not scared to death & She's strong person.
But the real Julia saved Spike's life. She was always protecting him. She was hunted for years because she wouldn't kill him to save herself. The change betrays her character. Faye's line is about how beautiful and dangerous Julia is. It's not about Julia being evil. Julia even stopped mid chase to give Faye a getaway rid. She was nicer to Faye than any other character aside from Gren.
I'll give this show one thing. John Cho got in pretty damn good shape despite being nearly 50 years old when filming this.

The choreography is good but the main problem is the Camera work/editing (their are some weird angles that they choose) and the speed of the fights. You can tell the performers put in the work for the fight scenes but I think they needed more time to get their moves down better.

@EYX LCY and the jet actor looks like he could do all spike does but better, which shouldnt be the case and rather the opposite really. Jet is old, spike is young, not the other way around.
@EYX LCY his youth is emphasized many times throughout the show, as he is running from his dark childhood which is right around the corner, in this it seems like he has had like 20 years to run from his past demons. He uses his carefree attitude to mask the trauma he's experienced and also a younger actor may have been capable of some of spike's more fluid and crazy moves. He mostly uses kicks in the original in a way that I have not seen translated well into this show, which is a shame because he had an awesome fighting style originally.
@EYX LCY it shows he is running from RECENT events because he grew up and was influences by the people he is running from. Him being old in this makes it so that it is something far behind him and that he has likely moved on from it. IE the wounds arent fresh.

It was so painful how bad a job the writers did of keeping a consistent tone. It was jarring and it's too bad because the cast and performances were pretty great.
Camera framing is very wrong. Netflix, go higher Asian coriographers. Those who filmed Jackie Chan fight scenes to be exact, I think they were from Taiwan.
Do not use weird angles in these fight scenes, unless the mood requires it. It does not, especially with the lighting.
The framing should've went like this.
Before Ed and Guy in White Suit rested, the fight before that shouldn't have been framed for the camera to switch subjects. Instead, should have panned from left to right as Ed gets pushed to the wall. After that, the camera would be viewing the subjects from the left-waist level-back facing upwards towards the two before being dragged along as ED gets pinned to the wall.
Avoid any instantaneous switches every second or so to avoid confusion. Frame them all and pan to the direction of the fight. Do not do close-ups as it makes things too tight and too vague for the viewers. Give them enough space to breathe without losing the boxes setting/atmosphere.
And in that scene where Ed tries to avoid getting shot by pushing the gun away...
The camera should've been viewing the subjects from back left before getting the close-up that goes from left-over-right.
But before this, the Camera before the gun was involved, should've slowly travelled from the left side of the room, from the right side to the back left of the subject as they moved towards the sink. This would give a definite idea of the space they are fighting in and more things to view.
Like, just from that scene, I could already tell this was trash by comparison.
Like, compare Old Jackie Chan movie fight scenes to this. You'll notice the huge difference in quality to the point where you'll start to question wether the camera crew were pros or just amateurs. And I'm not even a pro camera guy, I just like watching Jackie Chan movies. And if I can tell that, who knows what the Camera crew behind Jackie Chan is thinking right now.
Messy Live Action, didn't really like it but that's not the actors fault. They really did their best.

Also, another cool thing I like is its realistic technologies !
No laser pistols, just normally bullets cuz they are simply better in reality ! You need a huge installation/generator just for a laser rifle in reality which makes laser worthless and ineffective.
And yeah, their weapons and stuff/tech is mostly like what we have just a little more better and certain liberties.
