My grandparents were poor however they raised 13 kids. They had a clean house, they had food, they had clean clothes that were ironed. My grandfather worked as a mechanic and often worked out of state to support the family. My grandmother stayed home took in ironing to make extra money. They made it work.

My grandma had 18 kids ,2 died one at birth ,one later ,
My gran kept home and looked after them all
From what I can remember my grandad wasn't much help but she did an amazing job
When ever she went into labour with one the eldest would go for the midwife towards the end of birth ,she would hang on on her own as long as she could so wouldn't cost as much
A lot she birthed herself completely
      Bless her ,
She fed them on cheap meals, and for supper it was toast an dripping ,
      She was a wonderful woman

I was born poor and we looked poor. Old vehicles and used clothes. We were always clean but there was never any money for school pictures and field trips so the other kids made fun of us. I married a man from a upper middle class family and trying to live like he was used to threw us into bankruptcy when we ended up with a bunch of hospital bills. I am very low income now but I'm happy with what I have and we have what we need.

Our income changed in a period of 3 months in 2020. My husband went in the hospital with covid the day before Thanksgiving. He was in ICU on a vent and in a medical induced coma. He was in there till February 2021. He almost passed away 4 times. They came in on December 23rd and wanted to take him off life support. It was a terrifying time in my life. Without God i never would of made it. It took all our money to get him home. We are self employed so no jobs came in while he was in the hospital. When he came out he couldn't work he couldn't even walk. So we are living a different life now then we had. Not because of something we did but because of circumstances beyond our control. So i totally get it.

Wow! I love how you said the government shouldn't be labeling who is low income or not! LOL so true!!! I will proudly tell your whole comment section that about 20 years ago, my husband and I were living on $850 per month. We didn't have children yet but we had some pets and we found ourselves unable to pay our $1000 gas bill (they had just removed regulations on the gas companies and the price skyrocketed). For a year and a half, we had to heat our water using pots and pans and put that water into a solar shower we hung in the shower. We used candles and space heaters to keep our freezing home warm by staying in one room and tucking towels under the door. We learned so much by having nothing - including how to make food last forever by stretching proteins among rice and other grains and I can honestly say we are ready now for whatever may happen. I have no shame about that time because honestly it was some of the most entertaining times of our life - sleeping in sleeping bags on top of the mattress, the heated water poured into a bath, laughing about how a bag of rice lasted us months! We look back to that time fondly and I can honestly recommend that everyone spend some time in the "have nots" department and they will see that it isn't about what you have, but how you use it. That sounded bad lol but I think everyone here knows what I mean. Blessings Tessie and the rest of your viewers!

I was talking to a courtesy clerk at the grocery store. I asked him if he really could make a living wage doing what he did for a living. He proudly declared he was making $18.00 an hour and was even able to set aside some money every paycheck! It is expensive where I live. Affordable housing is an issue. I wanted to ask him more about how he makes ends meet but I did not want to be rude. he loves his life and makes his paycheck work. I'm happy for him.

I've been low income most of my life and it seems to me that a lot of my coping mechanism has to do with being content with myself and refusing to be drug into the competition of acquiring stuff. I don't think of myself as poor. I am proudly frugal and live a simple life. I think it takes courage to not be part of that worldly system. Besides, none of this stuff belongs to us anyway. It's all the Lord's and we are only stewards. ❤

Hi Tessie. I like the thought of bringing dignity to low income living-whoever said that to you likely meant it as a compliment. You definitely do that! I’m proud of you for sharing your past financial decisions that changed your lifestyle. You help so many people realize that our income can change for many reasons - and sometimes very quickly-but you can still have a joyful dignified life. Watching your channel brings me joy. Your low income life is actually very rich-in love, in laughter. You have food in your pantry, a roof over your head and your health and that makes you one of the richest people in the world.

No shame in poverty. Poverty does not stop anyone to be kind, to be generous, to be happy, to be content and to be proud of what they can achieve with what they have. At the end of the day I believe there is more unhappiness and discontenment in rich people than in poor people who refuse to think that only money bring happiness. God did not make money!!!

I felt it myself when somebody asked me once where I bought that. And when I said I made it myself and they said wow, that was absolutely delicious, I felt so proud of myself. It's like that with everything. And always feel good about your life. And after all, it's not about all the material things in life we have, it's about all the people in our life that we can share things with that makes me happy. Real friends know that. I grew up poor, my husband then boyfriend did not. It was a real struggle at first. I remember one evening he was so proud of himself he cooked up the 1 pound of hamburger and added the jar of pasta sauce to it and presented me with a spaghetti dinner. I lost my mind. The sauce already had meat in it and the burger was going to make a small meat loaf and something else. We had spaghetti every night that week. He learned that groceries were finite. Its funny now, but it prepared him for the great potato diet that was to come. We are still together after 40 years, thankfully he learned valuable lessons and we discuss every purchase and if something can be repaired so it can limp along until we can find a replacement. Not everything needs to be new, in fact many used items are much better.

Thank you for sharing this . Tessie I wanted to say something to you. You and Kenny are blessed and maybe at one time you had more in the past but honestly you have more now. You are debt free and you own land and have a cute home. I totally get where your coming from because my husband was in the air force for 10 years and we have been married almost 35 this June. So we know the times when things were lean for us . after our kids were born we had to sell one of our cars. Then later the other one and drive a old beater of a car. We could not afford a car payment then. our housing was taken care of by the military and our utilities were covered living in military housing. So thank goodness for that. Yet staying home and only have the one income I could not spend like I used. Yet our needs were met and once in a while we may get to eat out at a cheap meal thing. Yet I found out about a thrift store on base that was free to anyone. All ranks of the military and I have fun going in there finding things and it being free. Once you got tired of it or had things you did not want you just donated it back. So so awesome and that helped me with the desire to want to thrift when I could not afford it. I think the world really misses it when they put so much into image and also into what neighborhood you live in or how much you make. As Christians we know that life is not about the stuff. we all will die some day and the stuff will be left behind. We can enjoy it but not love it above God. You see that and I think those who have never had hard times sometimes do not know how to appreciate when they have better times. You know how to appreciate it. You know it was like to have more and also what it is like to have tight times. So it makes you more thankful for the simple things like a free item at the thrift store. I am the same way. So Tessie I am glad you talked about this. I think the world puts so much on image. Yet the silly thing is people many times are living outside their means putting tons of stress on themselves to keep a certain image. I am sorry that many were so thoughtless at that one time when Kenny had to sell his truck. That shows the wonderful man you are married too. His family mattered more to him than a posession and that shows a true hard working man. So many times as humans we can put stuff before what is most important. Have a blessed evening Tessie.

Good morning Tessie- Like you I was raised typical middle class. My mother was a nurse and dad worked at our local creamery. One side of my family were farmers, the other side were millionaires. It did not take me long as a child to notice the farmers were by far, happier! All that affluence did not buy happiness or fix every problem. Plus there was a strong focus on the material side of living. To me, that had a hollow ring. There is this saying, " Find the balance". I went on to attend art school on a full scholarship, have a career in electronics for 30 years and at the same time, be a small homesteader. I liked farming and gardening for many reasons. One was security, should I lose my job. Electronics jobs were not stable. This lifestyle has been good to me. Now we are living on my husband's family farm in semi-retirement. I pick up small jobs, such as teaching sustainability and would like to explore art again. If our national economy tanks, it is going to be up to the individual towns to rally for the lifestyle they want to protect and keep going. It would take a cooperative community effort. I would much rather have this lifestyle than a fancy swimming pool, expensive clothes and jewelry or black tie parties. You have presented it well Tessie. ~ Diane

Tessie, there is an old saying, "you have friends as long as you have a dollar in your pocket." In other words, friends are only there as long as you have money. We have gone broke more times than I would like to admit. However, what I have found is GOD provides, and we learn a valuable lesson. The lesson is leaning on GOD, more so! I would rather be poor and happy, than rich with pretend friends. This is very thought provoking. Everything we have comes from the LORD. So, whatever I have is HIS already, and that thought makes me extremely happy! Just like the widow's mite, we can give freely, because we understand that it belongs solely to GOD to begin with. I have tremendous peace being poor, but as my grandpa used to say, he was "family rich and pocketbook poor." In that, I am rich in family.

I remember how Oprah's audience reacted to Amy D and her TIGHTWAD GAZETTE years ago. I was a back-to-the-lander and somehow knew that the big mortgage/carpayment/truckpayment/insurance on and on, was a trap. There is a freedom in simple living.

I started teaching this September because we couldn’t afford me to stay home anymore. The principal asked us to go around, introduce ourselves and tell what fun thing we did over the summer. Everyone had vacations to tell about and I had VBS. Hey, we got to tell the good news though and that’s far better than any vacation!

I think being poor makes people more resourceful. There was a time I didn't have a stove. Had to cook everything in an electric skillet. Our water pump broke down so we flushed the toilet w 5 gal bucket of water. When I had a baby I took maternity leave w no income from my job. I look back on the hard times not w sadness but w pride that we pulled through. It makes you stronger.

I believe millions of American's are one pay check from becoming low income. I for one have been live on low income when my hubby was in the Navy believe back in the late 60's it was low but I never felt low income because maybe because all our friends were in the same standard of living. I always try to living within our income. I always had food and house and a car sometimes maybe only one car. Today were retired for about 17 years and yet were in a much better place today than most of our friends why because we did plan for our old age. So glad we did think way ahead of our future not live for each day on what we want instead we live for what we needed.

So well said, Tessie; I completely agree with what you said. The huge shift in our situation has brought tremendous change to my household. We may be considered low income by society's standards, but I feel like we are living more abundantly now on far less. I'm grateful for the skills I've learned, am continuing to learn, and for the creativity and self-sufficiency those changes brought into my life and my family's lives.

You go Tessie that's the Truth! We live in a little 960 sq foot house with cedar siding and drive old vehicles that are paid for except for the newest one we had to get because we live in the country and have to drive 30 to 70 miles to get groceries etc. We had to start all over again years ago and it wasn't easy.
