White Mages are one of THE quintessential job classes and they were introduced with the original game all the way back in 1987. Since then, White Mages have been a mainstay in the franchise, appearing in copious amounts of games in one shape or another, including Final Fantasy II, IV and IX. Many characters have also featured White Mage as a secondary focus, such as Aerith, Garnet and Yuna and the MMORPGs have fleshed White Mages out in a significant manner.

My older sister, who doesn't even game, even loves White Mage. But she's biased because she's an actual doctor. She was first introduced to the concept of WHM way back when I was playing FF1 on NES in the early 90's. She never got into playing the game, but she really dug the WHM's sprite.
Many MANY moons later after we had both grown up, I offered to cover her Halloween costume one year. By then she was a nurse pursuing her doctorate and I got her a staff and WHM robe to wear to a Halloween party. I did my best to cobble together a Paladin costume so I could be her tank(this was 05, at the height of my FFXI addiction). It worked perfectly, as she was a nurse and I was cop. Healer and protector. She loved how I fit that together. 16 years later, and she still has that old robe in a jersey frame in her house, hung on the wall with the picture of us at that party.
I recently got my 15 yr old niece into FFXIV and she started as WHM. I imagine that choice was at least influenced by that display in her family room.

23:15 - Dont forget, when using benediction you are essentially sacrificing yourself for the rest of the party. The enmity gained from using Benediction would dwarf any/all enmity gained by the other party members, which basically just means when a WHM would use benediction the mob would target them and not stop attacking them until the WHM was dead. Usually the WHM would use it when its a guarantee they cant kill the mob, and they would just try their hardest to stay alive while the rest of the party ran away to avoid dying.
It just goes back to your original point of the white mage sacrificing themselves in previous games. Just thought it was interesting! :)

It wasn't mentioned, but Aerith is also the one who used the "Holy" spell in FF7. Although Sephiroth may not be seen as a perfect black mage parallel with Meteor, I feel like this was a cool connection to older white mages.

For FFVI, I would argue, even if not a permanent party member, Banon can be considered a white mage due to having the pray command.
Although it is unknown how he does it since magic isn't as widespread early in the game both gameplay and story-wise.

FF3 NES White Mage is my favorite of all. The White spells Exit, Mini, and Toad didn’t work the way they did in battle like they did later on. In combat, these were kill spells.
The time between the Water Crystal to the Earth Crystal, if you kept a White Mage the whole time they had a lot more MP for those low level Mini, Toad, and Exit spells and effective stats to cast it effectively.
Once I realized that, the Dark Cave with the splitting enemies became a joke.
Same can be done with the Black Mage’s Warp, but it was a higher level spell that was competitive with Fire 3 and Bio which you could do AoE damage with.
Anyway, great vid! And if a souls-like FF is true, then hopefully we can bring back the justice of a hammer smashing white mage!
Edit: Some clarifications that weren’t mentioned:
-In FF5, they had a unique staff called the Flail and Morning Star which dealt random damage, sometimes high, sometimes low making them better physical fighters than the Black Mage.
Krile’s white mage outfit, the kitty cat costume, is a direct reference to the White Mage upgrade Devout.
-In FFT (PS version), they were renamed Priest and commonly used as an enemy in when fighting the Glabados Church. Staves also dealt more damage than the Wizard’s rod. White Mages didn’t get to use flails as they were redefined as Axes. This is also where the white mage robes changed based on faction with the classical white/red used by the main party and the Nanten armies, green used by bandits, and blue used for allied Hokuten armies.
Unique classes replaced the Squire class for unique characters, which is why Alma has access to Counter Tackle and other support abilities found amongst other unique classes. Since White Mage was renamed Priest, the more powerful versions were Holy Priest/Celebrant, Cleric, Princess as all spent time serving in the church.
-FF2A’s Seer is directly related to the FF3 Devout class, being an upgrade to the White Mage having the exact same cat hood.

Then the 60 to 70 quest line is about confronting their past (Sidurgu getting to see his mentor one last time) and then your character accepting that Fray is a part of them due to the DRK Soul Crystal originally being theirs.

AA note about the Whm in 14. It's not that the Warrior of Light is the only Whm, it's that Gridanian law bars non-Padjal from becoming White Mages, due to the involvement of white magic in the War of the Magi.
The Warrior or Light inherits the job crystal of A-Towa-Cant, a revered Padjal white mage. Because of this, they are considered "chosen" by A-Towa-Cant, and allowed to pursue the study of white magic.
There are 3 other white mages in Eorzea besides the Warrior of Light - Kan-E-Senna, Raya-O-Senna, and A-Ruhn-Senna.

FFXIV is full of them, but there’s also Auron from FFX and Snow (or the Sentinel role) from FFXIII. I think it might be a rarer thing in the franchise because it’s harder to make fun and to fit the mechanics into the game’s system, and that’s what makes me interested in learning more about it.

A little piece of trivia for White Mages in FFXIV, prior to the Stormblood expansion, white mages had an ability called cleric stance that would switch their mind stat with their intelligence stat so they could do more damage with their damaging spells. When Stormblood launched however, all spells that were casted by the healers would scale off of mind, regardless for what its purpose was.
