I've decided to compare the experience of doing a White Mages only playthrough in Final Fantasy games. This means I need to do a white mages only run in some Final Fantasy Games. That starts this week with Final Fantasy 1.
Music used in this video.
FF12 - Phon Coast
FF5 - World 3
FF3 - Invincible
FF1 - Chaos Shrine
FF1 - Cave Music
"Four white mages? It'll never work"
Good old Nuclear Power. You gave us so much... Like the concept of Boat-doken
I immediately thought about that
ALL HAIL THE LONGEST PUNCHLINE IN COMEDY HISTORY!
Now imagine all of this with only a single white Mage ... that never becomes a white wizard 😂😅
@@amozuilucimox2509 1 word. level up stat RNG manipulation.
I don't know why but when the white mages are casting spells they look like they're flipping the bird
I was just thinking that the "useless" diversion to get the Rod was a way of training the player to take dungeons in multiple trips. Then you get to the boss and lament forgetting to rest. Great comedic timing :D
Can't wait for FF3's All White Mage, since they get the Aero spell line, can use staves for item casting, and get the Devout as an upgrade.
One of the few times where the White Mage feels like a full class that could theoretically beat the game on their own
(Once you grind some levels, that is)
Genuinely look forward to Friday's for these. Having just wrapped up my first run of FF1 without class restrictions I appreciate this one so much more.
I wonder why people forget about taking the boat over to the river by the citadel of trials. Much better than the super long walk.
It is, isn't it. Silly me. Lol
Wow that went significantly better than i expected
A pleasant surprise for me.
@@Xephrost_Gaming So I totally expected running from all encounters until finding undead and leveling up by casting Dia. Not doing that until Vampire was really surprising to me. How tedious was it leveling up and getting money without it?
I love your videos. The solo class series is something I really look forward to. Great editimg and narration.
I'm ready to enjoy the suffering of others 😎
P.S I forgot there are those stat potions in the pixel remaster 😭
The stat potions are great. This would have been a lot more miserable without them. Particularly when dealing with Chaos' Curajas
Nice of chaos to take it easy on you, but with the tedium inherent to a White Mage only playthrough you certainly deserved it
Watching back the footage I was genuinely surprised at how long the fight lasted and he just never cast curaja again. It was an incredibly lucky fight.
You sound incredibly pleasant for a challenge that would plunge me into a psychotic episode of frustration. 😂
White Mage, one of the favorite "You don't NEED one but if you value your sanity, use one" classes. Whenever I go back to this game, I always find myself using the same party: Warrior, Thief, White Mage, Red Mage. Maybe one day i will torture myself by doing Thief, Monk, Red Mage, Black Mage.
Why RM over BM?
@@quinnlee-miller9792 From my experience, offensive Black Magic seems to be underwhelming in both this game and ff2. It's great for clearing out normal enemies pretty quickly, but you can easily do more damage with physical attacks on bosses. While Black Mage can do spells like Haste/Temper/Saber, Red Mage can also do this plus be a backup healer if needed. Red Mage also have better durability than the Black Mage. The versatility of the Red Mage is why i prefer them over Black Mage.
Would you ever consider trying these challenges with FFX-2? While it certainly doesn't have the best legacy, its combat and job system are some of the most fun in the series
FF X-2 is definitely on my list. It's a bit awkward in where/when you unlock specific dresspheres in the story. And how/if I can benefit from the garment grid gates when I would only have 1 job class to access. It's definitely one I'm thinking on.
@@Xephrost_Gamingng+? Level restarts n everything just sell everything before the new cycle
Okay I'm 2:29 and I'm already like nooooo! Your best farm is to dia the pants of the undead outside the marsh cave for easy xp and gil
There's also a forced undead battle in the ice cave for good farming
I've never subjected myself to the challenges necessary for TH-cam challenge runs, but I did try a 3 white mage run (don't remember if I used black belt, fighter or thief for the fourth) and farming undead was absolutely my strategy for the entire game
Ya know, in retrospect, finding an area heavy in undead and grinding with dia sounds obvious, but it did not occur to me at the time. Lol
It's kind of surprising just how much of FF1 and 2s bestiaries are undead. They mostly function the same so it's easy to forget the sheer breadth of them.
I love your series!
P.S.: Are we seeing a FFX-2 WM run this time too? Hehehe
I feel like I really struggled with Chaos with a normal party at that level. The NES FF bosses in the PR games are way overtuned compared to most of the game.
Agreed. They definitely kept the scaling the bosses had in other releases, but those had a bunch of bonus content that makes that make more sense. In the PR version, it's just a huge jump up in stats.
Don't take my nitpicking too harshly, as I've done challenge runs on most ports (starting up a LV 9 Chaos run on PR just now). You can stack buffs until 255 Attack, Defense, Accuracy, and Evade (3 Blinks or 2 Invisra and 2 Blinks max Evasion if you're low level). No way to check in battle, but you can ballpark the math. Also, if you're trying for a "purist" run, you can set Gil gain to x4 after you get the ship- the Match 15 minigame was the cash cow in all earlier ports (100 G per win on the NES, with different rewards in different ports). Kinda sad to not get anything from it in PR, but the x4 boost makes up for it. It's also a downer Tiamat 1 isn't weak to poison anymore, the Razer sword was always the preferred method of taking her down. Oh well...
Mute would've made Astos easier- I usually reset if it doesn't land round 1 when I have a party that can use it. Most challenge runs it's better to do Ordeals before the Ice Cave (you can dock the ship at the river just East after you get the Canoe). The Evil Eye has insta-death attacks, and the gauntlets help low-damage teams (like this or Thief solo). After Airship, it's also helpful to hit up the Waterfall before anything else in a challenge run. It's a quick and easy Ribbon, with a Defender sword for any party incapable of casting God-tier Blink. The best tactic for Lich 2 has always been kill it before Flare. As long as you bought some Ethers, spamming highest-tier Dia would've leveled it in a round or two.
The chance of a single-target hitting the bottom two characters is much lower than the top two slots, perfect for using them to buff others (like Giant potions) while the top slots buff Evasion. You can also swap it up to put your best damage dealer down there for better protection while you buff em if you're willing to risk sacrificing one or even all three others during the battle. They'll eventually get smacked, but with max Evasion even Kraken is likely to miss in melee.
"The first piscodemon does goes down"?
Legit curious: would it not have made more sense to put your main attacker further back in the line? The top spot draws the most attacks, and unless I'm mistaken there's no damage penalty to attacking from further back, it's just that the heavy hitters usually go up front to tank for the healers. Or maybe I missed something...
That's accurate. I generally make my third guy down the attacker for this reason.
Short answer, yes. That would make sense. But my brain wants the front line character to be the damage dealer (because you would normally have warrior there). But when everyone is the same class, it is silly. 3rd and 4th slot get targeted the least, so that is where main attacker should hang out.
5:40 Wait? Are they flipping us off?
Yessssss time for some White Magic!
“I’m your White Mage” x4
Any chance at a slightly lower tier being available on the Patreon? I’d be up for supporting the awesome content, but was hoping fro something a bit lower than ~$8CAD if possible. Regardless, awesome content all around!
Good feedback! Thought about it and decided to add a $1 and $3 tier (in USD). Same benefits, just for those who want to support at a lower price point.
@@Xephrost_Gaming Thank you! That was an easy instant pledge. Its not much, but I'm hoping with the lower tiers available, that you start getting a ton of small donations flowing in, that all add up!
Great video mate! +1 Sub
If Gamechamp3k can do it with one white mage you can do it with four.
Fun! No offense, but I dare you to try this on original 8 bit like I did or on Renaissance; way harder
If there were four Ribbons, it'd be a braindead upgrade to just put one on everyone regardless of class. By handing out only three, the devs challenge the player to THINK about who to leave out - a Warrior who can wear armor and a shield which null different combinations of elements in addition to higher Defense, most likely. A Monk who loses out on Defense from wearing equipment possibly instead.
If this was the psp version, there are items that let you cast healra, Flare and Holy for free. Super busted stuff. Also a 4th ribbon. Fun times
Sadly no, it's the pixel remaster, which doesn't have any of the fun bonus stuff.
@Xephrost_Gaming yeah, I did a playthrough with classes based on the FF origins party and realized I was missing a 4th ribbon. I wish they added the extra content at some point
This didnt show up in my subscriptions???
Hey I got an idea for a dark souls R run. Only dragon head stone BUT no lock on. Don't exactly fit with your theme I suppose but maybe one day. Natural magic only in FF6 could be fun. Thanks for the videos Duder.
Always looking to add to my list of potential one-off video ideas. So I will keep this in mind.
cool :)
Is the Fear strat on Chaos still viable? In FF1 there was a TAS that did solo WM run and it used Fear multiple times on Chaos and got him to run
That's incredible. I did not know that was a strategy. From looking on the wiki, it looks like this no longer works in the pixel remaster version.
@@Xephrost_Gaming sadness. I would've liked to pull that trick on Chaos in a WM run. I just finished an all BM run on XBOX, and trophy farmed (Warmech was a pain to get to spawn)
lol im doing a new plathrough and had this awful idea and ofc someone already did it on youtube
Masamune is a Japanese weapon. The "e" is pronounced.
Red mages
Oh wow , I didn't expect that. Will u use espers in 12? Cuz I don't think white mages only is winnable
Not gonna spoil, but 12 will get interesting.
@Xephrost_Gaming daym, now you got me excited
@@vastolorde98 I do suspect that at least going after some of them will be involved, because I think I recall a few decent physical weapons being on the disconnected sections of the white mage board?
Have you considered doing Monk only in any of the ff games you can do that in?
It is absolutely on the list for consideration.
Which version is that? Looks pretty decent, not like the original 😂😂 (don’t burn me plz)
Easy peasy
