Vancouver's Dark Side- sketchy Hastings Street - Night walk on November 5 2022

  • Hi walkers, this is a night walk video in Vancouver that I filmed while in the area of Main street and East Hastings Street. My walk around the area took me through the east Hastings that was lined with tent encampments.
    This area had Canada's first "safe injection site" and has a history riddled with drug issues and homelessness.
    Just two blocks away is an area called Gastown, which is a tourist attraction. I took this Vancouver walk through Hastings Street and down into parts of Gastown before passing back through Hastings one last time.
    Thanks for watching!

    I grew up in Vancouver, and have been living in Calgary for 20 years. As bad as this video looks my heart has always stayed in Vancouver, it's still the best city ever and I miss it everyday. ❤️👊🍻 Thanks for this video.

      I've kind of given up on Vancouver. It was amazing before, now the crime, drugs, insane cost of living....the mountains and ocean is nice, but doesn't make up for all the problems there now...I wanted to one day move back there. Now trying to figure out what I want to eventually do and where I want to eventually live....I hope Calgary has been good to you!

    As your walking down Main towards Hastings, @1:04, you see across the street an Owl Drugs. A couple of decades ago, I lived above there on the 5th floor, right on the corner in a two bedroom suite for a couple of years. It was a great apartment, big with lots of windows facing south and east and I was sharing the already low rent with a friend because the owner of the suite was a good friend of my mothers who wanted someone he knew to live there and since he already owned the apartment outright, I got a killer deal. It was central to most of the places I usually went to and was on 2 major transit routes at the time but now, there's also the Canada Line nearby. It had all the things I needed nearby like convenience stores and groceries. The biggest drawback was that even with the windows closed, it was noisy because of traffic.

      I agree, I don't know why it's so controversial for a people to think a country should look after its own citizens first?!?! And I also think other neighbourhoods are quite darker, they’re the ones full of the people who deal the drugs, keep this situation going, do nothing to find solution, and a lot of them have the same things going on just behind the walls of luxury towers and homes. And also, that term “tent city”, that’s downplaying the invasiveness of these people.

    • @Liberal_From_Prairies689
      @Liberal_From_Prairies689 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re not “street people”, they’re drug addict thieves who just set up tents and chop shops because they know there is no law enforcement in the DTES. A lot of these tents are just set up by drug addicts who actually do have homes and places to stay, they just have the tents to do drugs, sell drugs, distribute drugs, have drug parties, sell stolen items and chop up stolen bikes, paint them to hide serial numbers and then exchange them for drugs.

    • @Liberal_From_Prairies689
      @Liberal_From_Prairies689 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another reason why the street has become so vile is because of Sarah Blyth and her OPS organization. She has 8 buildings on Hastings alone in this area where she gladly feeds people drugs, gives them needles full of heroin and pipes full of crack and disguises it as an organization that “prevents overdoses”. She would rather keep them addicted to drugs and living like this, if you can even call this “living”, instead of encouraging them to get off drugs and seeking rehab. Outside a lot of her buildings you’ll see people passed out on the sidewalks, or hunched over because of all the heroin they do. She also sets up tents all over the DTES run by drug addicts who distribute drugs where people shoot heroin and do whatever openly and publicly. She even had the audacity to set one up in front of building that houses low income seniors and disabled people, it’s the building seen around 4:40 by the Pennsylvania hotel SRO. And one of the things about the SROs, they allow the drug addicts to do drugs in the building and allow drug paraphernalia to be passed out in them, these are the same SROs the provincial government sends recovering addicts to expecting them to stay clean in such a setting.
      One of the companies that was leasing land to her in the Eastside where people could go so drug openly outside cancelled their lease with her, if only the others leasing her buildings would cancel their contracts as well. She is major part of the problem in the Eastside.

    Ken Sim needs to step the hell up like the mayor of Toronto and a couple mayors in BC and clear out the tents and ban tents from being set up on sidewalks. The police need to step up too. The landlords of the low income housing need to step up too and stop allowing this in front of their buildings. There are drug addicts that block entrances with their tents and junk, they block the entire sidewalks, the police do nothing, the landlords do nothing, the mayor does nothing. A city bylaw exists preventing structures from being set up on sidewalks like this, the bylaw also prohibits setting up structures and selling merchandise without a permit. The city isn’t even enforcing its own bylaws. There is too much pandering to the advocate organizations who only defend this going on in the DTES because they just don’t want them in their own neighbourhoods. Some of them advocate for this to continue in the DTES all the while living in Kitsilano or Yaletown and petitioning to prevent the construction of supportive housing in those neighbourhoods. You’ll see them drive up in the DTES in their BMWs and Teslas to protest against the removal of tents all the while signing petitions to keep the supportive housing and centres to help addicts out of “their” neighbourhoods. There is a lot of hypocrisy going on among advocate groups and the city and law enforcement need to ignore those groups.

    I’m sorry but this makes me so upset, these people need homes, food, a reason to live…but what does our government do, they buy weapons, one missile could feed all of Hastings….that’s sad..what if we went back to being just peace keepers, the world looked up to Canada, now things have changed, more into military, less for the homeless…..Sad 😢

      Food trucks give them food everyday at no cost to them, along with free clothes and necessities. Government benefits every month are spent on mostly fentanyl. They have more disposable income than people that work. Why would they go to a shelter with rules? You may believe that I a being mean, reality is that this is the governments fault and everyone is being played.

      Right, these are just normal, hard working, law abiding citizens who can’t afford a house. Give me a break. These people couldn’t maintain their lives if an apartment was $50 a month. I think you need to reevaluate who’s nuts here. Why don’t you try acknowledging reality instead of the “muh social justice” trope?
