ISTJ here. I work in Pure Math (the abstract kind, not the rubbish that engineers and Physics do). From what I understand, and using an analogy from Probability Theory: - ISTJs are like Bayesian inference. Internal sensory information informs thinking (Si), and abstractions onto reality can be initially shaky (inferior Ne). But as the ISTJ matures over time, gains new experiences, and keeps getting priors challenged, he becomes much better at gauging reality. - INTJs are like Classical inference. Internal abstractions (hypothesis making) inform thinking and decision making (Ni), and confirming them with reality can be initially shaky (inferior Se). But the INTJ maturing allows him to get more data points, and therefore craft better hypotheses that get confirmed more often.
How i think about details as an INTJ: When i have a theory that comes up my mind, i need details to confirm this theory. If the theory is confirmed and it doesn't conflict with any of my other theories, then i can put the theory into my pool of worldview theories and can forget about those details. If it doesn't fit, i need more details to confirm this idea and may look at those old theories again and check if they are still valid. I feel like this is the reason to come up with those abstract ideas in the first place. I can't or don't want to remember all those details, so i need to simplify it and find a logical conclusion to pack as many details into as little to memorize as possible. It feels like freeing up the mind from unnecessities to get more capacity for more important stuff. It also allows for a simpler comparison between theories from different topics and allows for a better recognition of things that could go wrong, not regarding this special topic, since we INTJs are usually able to connect the lines between theories and have high standards for new information. Downside is, that those details sometimes are really important and not all information can be put into One-Sentence-Rules. To be overly self-critical and accept the concept that our conclusions are not 100% correct all of the time is pretty essential for not becoming too separated from anyone else's thinking in my opinion. But this is not the worst part about being INTJ. As you mentioned correctly the Si is my worst enemy. I hate that i even have a body and a place to live that needs so much maintenance. I would love to upload my brain anywhere to not have to deal with this stuff. :D Really great Videos, btw! Thanks for your highly analytical input.
as an Istj its so fascinating how the Si hero works in my life. I can notice the slightest change in my internal body, whether its temperature and the environment surrounding me especially when driving, growing up i assumed everyone was in tune with themselves as i am.
That's really interesting! I'm ENFJ. I can have a hard time with noticing stuff like that, especially if I am stressed and am just doubling down of Fe hero, focusing outwards.
Okay, I'm convinced now that if your channel and all your videos had existed 10 years ago, I could've figured out my type just from watching a few of your videos, in a similar way to how I actually figured out my type back then through multiple resources. First, I would've stumbled upon this video and watched it out of curiosity, because I was mistyping back and forth as ISTJ and INTJ on tests. Then, while this video wouldn't have drawn me closer to either type, you would've immediately exposed me to the cognitive functions for the first time, and with your voice being pleasant to listen to, I would've explored your channel further and found your previous videos all about the functions, so I would've watched those so I could learn more about them. Through those, I would've realized that Ti is my dominant function, and that I'm not an ISTJ or INTJ after all, but likely either ISTP or INTP. Then, to figure out which one, I would've watched your Ne vs. Se video, and realized I related to Se more than Ne, leaning me more toward ISTP, but still not entirely convinced. So I would've watched your earlier ISTP video, which provided a much more relatable description of ISTPs than a lot of what I'd seen elsewhere on the internet, and then your ISTP with Enneagram types video, introducing me to the Enneagram as an added bonus, I would've definitely related to your description of the ISTP Type 9, thus landing me at my correct MBTI and Enneagram type.
Great video! I'm still finding myself jumping back and forth with both of these personalities when taking the Myers-Briggs test. I have observed that the test apparently gets biased depending if it was a workday or a non-workday. I have ultimately concluded that I have a different personalities based on my environment (workspace personality and my everyday personality). I tend to be more of a INTJ on the daily since long I can remember (love theory-crafting, pragmatism, long-term vision, lone wolf, etc.) but probably I was inadvertently molded by school and parents to approach duties as an ISTJ which is really useful in the engineering field. I don't know for sure if its possible to have a dual personality based on the Myers-Briggs Theory, but I feel like most of the time either personality shines through based on the context/situational needs. I could describe it as If my internal thought process was of an INTJ where I use the theories made from intuition to challenge engineers in their own field of expertise, but the external execution process was one of an ISTJ. One way to describe this would be that I tend to not let a single stone unturned, but before even doing so, I have already made up my mind about how it is going to look under said stones using intuition from "proxy" information and/or related experiences. Is this even possible or maybe am I misinterpreting the psychological profiles?
An INTJ who is operating healthily will use his extraverted sensing when executing his plan. Also, you either have a dominant Si or a dominant Ni, they can't simply switch because it is quite hard to develop. It takes 25 years for a human mind to develop after all.
It is possible that when completing the test you put more weight on a certain aspect on one occasion than on another occastion. I feel like those test say it is black or white while there are probably 50 shades of grey. The test I took said that I was an ISTJ (60% S, 40% N). I have read what the I, the T, and the J mean. For those I agree 100%. But I only agree with 60% of the description for the S. And I agree 40% with the description of the N. So it is possible that you are, like me, an ISTJ for some aspects of your life and an INTJ for others. (If that makes any sence to you?)
Same: 15 years ago I did the test 3 or 4 times and was always borderline ISTJ / INTJ. Now I have more grey hairs I have believed I am INTJ and this video has convinced me. I think in shapes, in processes and routinely change things looking for improvements.
2:30 its not actually true. I as INTJ can tell you that Ni hero function often manifests as best possible way of doing things which I want to do not things to which I was commited to do. Which means that when the rules of game change I get a new plan which may be not the previous plan. I do plan on current predictions of best efficient way of living for me. ISTJs are rather commited to their previous plans which may be not the best plan in present time. So INTJs can betray their chief for example if they note his lack of loyality to them even if they are commited to big project.
could I be ISTJ if I always need google maps, I can pass through a street 20 times and next time I’m there it will feel like the first time, I always say all streets look the same to me 😅 also, I literally can’t dance even though I’ve tried to learn, being around people stresses me out, too many noices stress me out, I can’t concentrate on something if there’s music on or someone talks next to me, even Lo-Fi music sometimes feels distracting if I need a lot of concentration to work on something. finishing a project depends on the project, some projects I’ve completed in two days, others I’m still working on because they are not urgent so I take my time. usually I have so many goals for the following months that I don’t know what to focus on first and I get super overwhelmed, so lately I’ve been using notion and decided on 2-3 projects to work on first and just complete those first before moving on to the others. When designing something I usually go on pinterest to get inspired, but also I get inspired from current designs. my work process in designing is usually a few ideas I’ve grabbed from multiple designs I like, plus adding some of my own, and I combine all those ideas into one design (I make lots of variations before deciding on which one is the best) so if you look closely you can kind of see I’ve been influenced by a few artists/designers in almost every design I have. I’m not directly copying them but you can kind of see the influence. But the more original and innovative my designs are, the happier I am, when I rely on my own ideas and they end up looking great rather than relying on what’s already out there which makes me feel like a fraud. My memories sometimes are very detailed, for example I have a few vivid memories of my childhood, where I can say the color of the door was brown and there was a red towel hanging, but other memories especially more recent ones can be blurred and unclear and I usually don’t remember in detail how things looked, maybe that’s why I don’t remember streets and all streets look almost the same to me 😅 sometimes in movies if two actors look similar I will confuse between the both until my mind finally understands who is who. I know two cousins who kind of look alike, and i confused them for months, now when looking at them I wonder how did I confuse them they aren’t that alike 😅 I relate to ISTJ because I don’t understand the Ni in INTJ but then I also don’t understand the S in ISTJ no matter how much I read and watch videos as my english isn’t very good. I need real life example that i can relate to otherwise what someone says makes no sense to me. if i can’t relate it to my own life i don’t undersand the concept. does that also make me closer to ISTJ? now, the reasons I don’t relate to ISTJ is because I hate traditions in my country, I hate doing things just cause everybody else does them, I am very happy when I think of my own way of doing something rather than what is established, but “my way” doesn’t happen very often which makes me doubt I’m an INTJ. I also work on multiple designs at the same time, I don’t start one and finish it completely, sometimes I take a break and work on another one and I’ve realized this helps me in making better designs in general cause it all is somehow related and the more time away I take from a design and work on other things, the more value I will bring into it when I continue working. Every time I come back to a design it’s like I come back in a renewed version of me 😅 so the designs that matter to me are the ones I prolong like this and take my time to complete. I procrastinate a lot, prolong things a lot, value and quality matters so much to me rather than just completing something out of nowhere. I also procrastinate when I don’t find value in doing the thing I’m supposed to do. I work from home and most of the time I work spontaniously, depending on how inspired and motivated I am. but I do have an abstract plan in my head, sometimes a make a to-do list in my notes app when it’s a busy day. I’m almost always late at least a few minutes. My boyfriend says I have no sense for time 😅 I always think I will get ready in 15 minutes and even though it has never happened I still hope next time I get ready I will figure out a way to get ready in 15 minutes. If someone can tell me if I’m closer to ISTJ or INTJ I will be eternally grateful 😅 this is killing me as I always relate to both, which I know is impossible, so I’m probably getting something wrong..

Enjoyed the video but initially was overwhelmed by the speed - changed playback to 0.5x and it was even better; is that the INTJ in me trying to process as I go? 😆
What else do you notice about the differences between these two types?

Is not like Ne that is our main weakness.
