Great review! As a longtime honda fan/buyer, we were comparing the 2013/14 RAV4 to the 2014 cr-v and what I knew that the 2015 cr-v would be. The RAV4 won by a slight margin and we love it. You got most of our reasons captured. At the time the cr-v had no bells and whistles either. But the prospect of waiting for the cr-v to refresh a bit in 2015 meant a cvt which I didn't necessarily want. Love that you can press a button in the rav to distribute 50/50 power. Thanks for doing this one...you're the only ones to do this type of review that I've seen. Or acknowledge the diff. Lock button. Just be sure it's in 'sport' mode at the same time!
@@Suicidebummer88 I have only found conflicting info on this. When Sport mode is selected, torque transfer to the rear wheels starts from the moment the steering wheel is turned, to reduce the load on the front tires. If understeer develops, torque transfer to the rear wheels is automatically increased by up to 50 percent, further reducing front tire loading to provide enhanced lateral grip. So it could increase handling in slippery/stuck situations but other sources say it can over/understeer so it appears to be situational.
FYI 3.0L T6 Volvos are always faster without brake torquing them. If you brake torque it the turbo doesn't go into overboost mode. It's best to just floor it off idle
I am a TOTAL Honda fanboy, but even I'd give both of them a buy it. The CR-V is fantastic (and as you'd expect I think it's better than the RAV4) however I still think the RAV4 is a fantastic car!
2015 Honda CR-V- Does the adaptive cruise control feature work from 0 mph to 120 mph? Any limitations? Does it brake completely automatically and start driving automatically after braking completely? does it have the “Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function”?
So would we but once again Subaru is not happy with us because of this cliffhanger video: th-cam.com/video/hrdb_UVTa20/w-d-xo.html so please don't hold your breath.
To the TFL Car team, could you PLEASE(!!!) go back to the "old" way of reviewing cars?? Who cares how fast a crossover goes around a track honestly?! Take the Audi S5 review you made, THAT was a PROPER review on a real ROAD (waaay more entertaining than going around a track)! At least you still do off-road reviews (which are cool btw)
5:34 - are you sure about those numbers? In Europe Honda claims that CR-V has 165 mm (6,5 in, as much as Chevy Cruze) of ground clearance, Toyota says RAV4 has 187 mm (7,6) with big 2.2l diesel. Does Toyota sell different RAV here?
You have awesome review videos! Also, I like your star system for ratings. Instead of Nathan holding up a sheet with ratings on it that is hard for us to see, you should use on screen graphics to display the ratings; at the end of the video have a graphic that summarizes the pro's and cons' of each vehicle, including your rating system. Keep up the good work, your videos are always improving and excellent.
I dont mean to be offtopic but does anybody know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot the account password. I love any assistance you can offer me
CRV great on roads just don't try anything too crazy offroad or in deep snow. I thought with the new CRV Honda would actually come out with a better AWD system, guess not. And Toyota get rid of the ancient 2.5/4 and go with a diesel or something. These are not race cars. AWD/4wd torque counts! Also diesels have much better fuel economy than old fuel injection engines...
True, but the newer modern diesels from BMW and Mercedes are just as clean as their gas burning cousins. Toyota now uses BMW diesels in some of their newer 2016 models. Was supposed to cross over to the 2016 RAV4, but so far they still use the 2.2 Toyota diesel. Would be nice to see at least a bit more HP for the RAV!
Yeah, VW/Audi which make millions on overpriced cars tried to cut corners to compete with BMW and Mercedes and even Fiat in the diesel arena. Hell even their TSi/TFSI engines have many issue's. Just sad. Toyota has made a deal with BMW for their diesels which are up to spec and better than the Audi/VW ones.
If I'm buying a Toyota I don't want a fucking BMW engine in it. BTW this is America, we don't do diesel in any other thing than trucks. They stink and they sound like crap.
MT got a lowly 23 MPG overall when they tested the CRV, countering its 26/33 EPA rating. The CRV didn't stand out in any way in their testing, but they gave it SUV of the year.
The star system should work. I would recommend establishing a baseline for the bottom end at least! I think they can be both entertaining and clean enough to share with Church people.
I might be the only one but I prefer intros of like 3s length (like Autocar has) over these tens-of-seconds. Also I believe the segment the Infiniti and the Volvo fall into is not a luxury one, but rather a premium segment. Cheers
rear seat space is understandably smaller in Volvo. As a father to 2 boys, I will take more cargo and little less room in a back seat any day...or I'll take my 11' outback which has plenty of both :) My bet is 90% of customers will by this as a 2+2 family wagon so space provided is more than sufficient.
Having problems with RAV4 gripping in snow? Because you need winter Hercules, Avalanche tires with teeth. Road noise is a bit noticeable with these tires on dry pavement because of the deep lugs and they are deliberately soft, but the car just loves them and knows how to use 'em. 2 beefs. 1/The plastic trim around wells? No good. They need an impact class plastic not whats on them. They easily will give you a hairline crack . 2/ Engineering could have rearranged the oil pan turn of the exhaust pipe and moved it up a bit. It's the only thing that drops the overall clearance an inch, and that's the worst place to have it.
I wish reviewers do road noise level measurement at certain cruising speed like Motorweek used to, which is more meaningful than some features on the vehicles
Volvo really needs to explain the differences in their standard program and sport. I continue to see reviewers use the transmission sport and then complain about understeer. Volvo implements a very Jekyll and Hyde system in their AWD vehicles. Engage transmission sport and change DSTC to sport and you'll find a very different feel at the front as well power on rotation in tight corners. The current XC60 T6 AWD Sport can quite easily 4 wheel drift around tight corners if set up correctly.
Next year I look forward to a similar test including the Jeep Renegade. I was considering a Subaru too but if they are too worried about flaws being shown I would rather not purchase one.
The Ruts and Guts rating would be best quoted as RUTS... It makes sense too; a tire with a higher Ruts rating would be one that gets you farther up the trail- the better tire. Yep.. Very simple.. 1 Rut to 7 Ruts ... Straight forward meaning... Not sure why one would choose to buy the Honda over the Toyota when you state that the AWD drive system is better on the Toyota. Then you have a CVT vs a conventional trans ( and issues that come up with CVT's like winding up, inability to pass as much torque, etc ) - so not sure why one would choose the Honda; looks is like a fad, and getting from point A to point C is the reason for a vehicle, and mechanically, it seems that the better vehicle is the RAV4.
The CR-V has more groud clearance than the RAV? In Europe RAV is credited with 18cm and the CR-V with only 16.8... And the trunk is bigger on the CRV with 589 liters compared to 549 liters on the RAV, both without sparewheels. Aniway I like the Honda better.
Another question: Are you going to take some vehicles you've already reviewed, like the new Outback or the Forester, and rank them on the new "Ruts and Guts" rating system as well?
Scotty kilmer channel chose the rav 4 over the crv, and this guy has 40+ yrs experience in fixing cars, unlike some that knows nothing about fixing cars
I think we need to know what gets 10 points, what is the top end of your scale? I would suggest a stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon would get 10 points on everything. Then you would rate everything else on that scale, so that something getting 5 points is half as good off road as the Jeep which was best.
I seriously don't understand why do cars in America always get big and old engines and transmissions rather than the new ones. Do you guys really prefer this engine over 1.6 diesel that CR-V gets in Europe that produces 160HP@4k rpm(25 less than this) and 350 nm@2k rpm(258lb ft) of torque(like 105 nm or 77 lb ft more at half rpm) with an awsome 9 A/T instead of the lousy CVT. And you wanna know the consumption... 47MPG city 58MPG highway 53MPG combined(rather than 25,31,27 respectively for this 2.4).
+rondar2 Three things to remember: gas is cheaper in North America, many Americans hate diesels and small engines, and British gallons are bigger than U.S. gallons. The 1.6 diesel definitely does not get 47 US mpg...
How about a "Wheel Rating" for Ruts and Guts. 4 Wheels is the highest and good offroad, and low score is a 1-2 wheeler. Just imagine a SUV getting a 1 wheel rating on its AWD version.
4:33 is all you need to know about the Rav4 and its "all wheel drive". What a joke. My old 98 AWD caravan never let me sit there with the front wheels spinning and the rear wheels taking a frickin nap. Then like the trooper he is, Nathan played it off like i was totally normal to sit and grab a sandwich while the computer woke up.
When considering off-road capability, wheel travel is important. The more flex there is the better the traction off road. You should always consider this with crossovers. They usually don't have enough flex and travel for off road and can easily unload a wheel and even two diagonally then it's up to the traction control to keep you going forward if it can distribute torque or use the old trick in braking with power to fool the differentials. Maybe the CRV has easier flex that keeps the tires on the ground longer and fools you into thinking the tires were better (though they may very well be better.)
dchawk81 Yes. Crossovers usually have limited articulation and so aren't anywhere near as good as dedicated off-roaders. Of those crossovers, the ones with the better AWD systems and traction aids, like artificial brake based torque distribution will be much better.
dchawk81 You could use a simple ramp to determine a ramp travel index (RTI) and then you can compare vehicles to each other and see which one travels further up the ramp before it lifts a wheel then find out which ones can keep climbing the ramp using whatever traction aid it has (such as 4 lock or computer braking traction aid.) It wouldn't have to be a very steep ramp (because most of them don't have great approach angles.) Once you perfected the ramp it would bee simple to compare any CUV they test to another. It would be fair and wouldn't rely as much one type of tire.
We actually Leased a Rav 4 After TFL thanks for the advice . I will say It's hers.. I hate it , I've been poring over videos for all years related to this model. basically looking for any model that shares that ridiculous center diff lock. we have a 2017 with only 3k miles on it. great for her the 90/10 split in normal conditions is fine and when it gets slick she is a nurse and will be driving the most plowed roads to the hospital. Now me on the other hand, Is there a way to get a permanent center lock PAST 25 mph? don care if it damages anything in the long run, With studded blizaks and center lock I would love to get 24 MPG 250 mile up north in Maine in the dead of winter. can i pull a fuse or some trick?
why do you need 50/50 lock over 25mph? Subaru doesn't even have that. Jeeps can do 50/50 lock up to 55mph but it's not recommended for over 25 anyways.
These are NOT true M&S tires on the both vehicles. These are apparently all-season tires designated for use at wide temperature ranges on a hard pavement rather than snow or slush, and it's quite strange to see that much attention to the "grip" in this video. One's got to be a moron going up a mountain in a descent snowfall with tires like these. The review also lacks some details about the crucial off-road features like the VST, presence of diff locks.
I say you use the rating system using a billy goat. The reason is these aren't really off road cars and if they do well off road we refer to it as a little billy goat.
Is the new CR-V any better inside? I know the '15 RAV4 is just a ton of cheap, crappy feeling plastic inside. I've driven CR-Vs a few years old and they are just as horrible.
you have to realize that every day cars like those are probably going to have some cheap feeling plastics in them. If you want something better, go with a Lexus or an Acura.
igeekone I beg to differ. Ford and Mazda, for example, have interiors that don't sound like cheap tupperware when you knock on them. I have a $19k Mazda 3 and the dashboard and door panels are soft to the touch. At the $30k price point, excessively cheap plastics everywhere is unacceptable.
Ed Berger glad you said it. Keeps me from saying it. :-) I read online somewhere that the American auto companies use the general buyer as the test goats, making prettier interior to boost sales, and changing everything every two or three years, when it doesn't hold up. Its something everyone should think about... (That's why Toyota sticks with the same stuff for years) They do that, work out the kinks, all while building new stuff behind the scenes. Luxury doesn't determine reliability and test reviews shouldn't be determined based on that.
would also like to see Nissan and Subaru and Chevy and jeep and other all together and then see the review, would only make it even..right?? ... yes?? and ford and who ever else i didnt think of at this time and all should have same tires on them..cool??...yes very cool...looking forward to this..very much so.
I just don't get it, WHY SO MUCH FOCUS ON TOYOTA RAV4 THAN HONDA CRV? Rav4 has more screen time, everything shown is about Rav4, even the guy is standing closer to Rav4 and everything about Rav4 is being explained, even the guy is shown driving Rav 4 from the inside, than CRV and CRV is the overall winner! WHY, DAMN IT!!! Talk about being biased - Just saying!
What is more important to you? The engine or those tires/accessories? If the engine dies how much it will cost you to repair? Don't judge a car buy it's accessories or features judge by it's engines. I will go for the toyota rav4 and the honda earthdreams engine sucks!
Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is what you would want then. The only vehicle in it's class to offer one. They also have a v6 if you want to tow with it. At first I wasn't a fan of it's looks but then it grew on me. Im kind of interested in getting one now with the v6
Love the tail gate race! It was out of the box...Taco Bell. Haha! All and all very nice comparison but we purchase the Rav4 instead of the CRV because the CRV has such an ugly rear profile.
Delete the useless moon roof from the Honda EX series. No one uses it! Also, don't make us take that stinkin' leather upholstery to get the motorized tailgate. We want FABRIC upholstery!
99% of the time it's down to the driver and tyre type not the car. In this video you can clearly tell they had the traction control turned off for dramatic effect, and they didn't explain the centre diff lock well enough on the RAV. Poor video review in my opinion.
your videos are not very informative... Regardless i live in a very cold snowy area,i have seen hundreds of cars on snow since i was a child,my parents and i would even get stuck sometimes. When they bought a Subaru Station wagon we would plow into almost 10 inches of snow in front of our house and not get stuck, they later bought an Audi Quattro and it was a monster. currently i own a Volkswagen Tiguan and i have never been stuck yet. the only crossover the Rav4 will surpass is the CRV i see them stuck everywhere with BMWs and that is not an accomplishment. you can watch plenty of videos or just compare by using off road tests with somebody else.
b/c people don't always want to buy a Subaru, that's why. sorry to say, but Toyota is more reliable. Subarus rust out, their headgaskets blow out, they consume oil even well before the low tension piston ring fiasco, and they are in general high maintenance. Toyota's torque vectoring AWD system is sufficient for almost all of the consumers who would be purchasing an SUV in this class. no one takes their SUV on a closed course hill with frictionless rollers positioned in specific places to intentionally fool an AWD system like Honda and Toyota. news flash, turning on ESC solves most problems. also, i have never been stuck in my RAV4 that was the fault of the AWD system. it was always the tires or driver error
I came here to watch rav4 and cvr, i wounder why it switched to infinity and volvo
This cars are tie they just different Honda crv fast but I don't like it. Toyota RAV4 is simple car I like the style and I don't care about the inside I care about the engine and anything else.

Denis LeBlanc Agreed. And it's been done. It would make for boring TH-cam videos though. ;)
Burning tires emblems might be good (isn't that a secret pleasure of all auto journalists?).
Nathan, good review, can you big guys seat at the front and at the back of this cars? When Emmy seats athe back of Honda it dosent say much to me...
I say you rate them on a balls scale...
That was immature.
Jonathan Washington Right, because mentioning hooters was the height of maturity. (That's when I clicked thumbs-up, though)
Martin Espinoza i think saying balls is on a whole different level than hooters.
Jonathan Washington I can't wait to see your explanation.
Martin Espinoza Don't need an explanation, it's what i think it's my opinion and im entitled to my own opinion, have a nice day.
lol, "honda has taken it both ways" sounds about right.
The CR-V and RAV4 look so similar it's almost sad.
Looks like will be a good video...
Excellent
Yay! Go Honda!
Can you guys do the 2015 jeep liberty?
those are high way tires to me.
You get what you pay for !
Ed Berger glad you said it. Keeps me from saying it. :-)
I read online somewhere that the American auto companies use the general buyer as the test goats, making prettier interior to boost sales, and changing everything every two or three years, when it doesn't hold up. Its something everyone should think about...
(That's why Toyota sticks with the same stuff for years)
They do that, work out the kinks, all while building new stuff behind the scenes.
STONES! Use stones. Rate the 4x4 capabilities by 'stones'. Wow this truck has got some stones, we rate it at 4.6 stones out of 5.
When we going to see Cadillac CTS VSPORT v. Mercedes C400
Did honda get rid of the vibration problems with the CRV?
+momay69
NO. Got it three months now, the vibration getting worst, Honda doing nothing about it. They keep putting it off, very frustrating.
is your crv 2015 or 2016?
+signaler li 2016, Still no words from them. So disappointed with Honda
Brian NG thanks for reply. that is why i choose not buy 2016 crv
do it for honda crv vs mazda cx 5
Hooters! Or mountains.
Only if they changed the rear of RAV4
how about the rogue?
😂😂
i wonder if you guys had the diff lock on in the rav4 its ment for snow and mud
Honda crv is the best no doubt and infinity and volvo i like infinity honda crv anda infinity are the best
2015 CRV touring. Done...
Rate them by andre faces from 1 to 5
The 2015 Infiniti looks a lot older in design than a 2015 Volvo...
A locking diff. would make everything all better lol
Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is what you would want then. The only vehicle in it's class to offer one. They also have a v6 if you want to tow with it.
At first I wasn't a fan of it's looks but then it grew on me.
Im kind of interested in getting one now with the v6
Tires look they're balding
Señor
Toyota is a buy it Honda forget it
тойота рав 4 лучше!!!!!
Rav4 is wiiide tho
Love the tail gate race! It was out of the box...Taco Bell. Haha! All and all very nice comparison but we purchase the Rav4 instead of the CRV because the CRV has such an ugly rear profile.
CR-V vs Subaru forester premium
8:16 no such word as “Heigth”
What a fucking shame the Honda has a CVT gearbox !
hint: there is no "th" at the end of the word "height"....
Delete the useless moon roof from the Honda EX series. No one uses it!
Also, don't make us take that stinkin' leather upholstery to get the motorized tailgate. We want FABRIC upholstery!
both the crv and rav4 have shit AWD lol, compared to Symmetrical awd, 4Motion,Quattro those 2 suck big time.
When they bought a Subaru Station wagon we would plow into almost 10 inches of snow in front of our house and not get stuck, they later bought an Audi Quattro and it was a monster. currently i own a Volkswagen Tiguan and i have never been stuck yet. the only crossover the Rav4 will surpass is the CRV i see them stuck everywhere with BMWs and that is not an accomplishment. you can watch plenty of videos or just compare by using off road tests with somebody else.
www.jdpower.com/press-releases/2017-vehicle-dependability-study. SAD!
b/c people don't always want to buy a Subaru, that's why. sorry to say, but Toyota is more reliable.
