  • In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by one of our most popular guests Dr. Douglas Beaumont. Doug is a convert to the Catholic faith. As a fervent Evangelical, Doug chose one of the top apologetics schools, Southern Evangelical Seminary, in order to deepen his faith and learn how to evangelize and share the Evangelical Christian faith. Doug did his Master's degree there and worked and taught under the esteemed Evangelical theologian Norman Geisler.
    However, after digging deeply into the Church Fathers and the history of the Bible Doug eventually ended up leaving his teaching career at Southern Evangelical Seminary to become Catholic.
    It's an incredible story, and Doug is a razor sharp guest - we always love having him! You're going to love hearing his faith journey.

    A great conversion story. For all those watching, I highly recommend his book, With One Accord. It is a breath of apologetical air.

    This video ended discussing the origin of the Canon quite a bit. This was one of the first issues that gave me pause, demanded investigation and ultimately led me to Catholicism

    I read online somewhere that the co author of Norman Geislers most recent book on Catholicism ended up converting shortly after the book published. I believe his name was Joshua bethancourt, anyone hear this too?

    My favorite quote from Doug:
    Sola scriptura doesn't work if you don't know what the bible is, where is came from, and you don't know how to read it, and you are applying what you already think to scripture.

    • @ContendingEarnestly
      @ContendingEarnestly 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sola scriptura is a praxis, a standard for measuring true doctrine from false. We are never told or encouraged to remain as babes in Christ but to mature. 2 Tim 2:15 'study to show yourself approved of God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed handling accurately the word of God.' The bible is very clear that we can indeed handle Gods word accurately. But it requires study. Sola scriptura just says the bible is our highest and final authority. When we see doctrines that are contradictory to it, we throw them away.

      Expanding the referent while limiting the scope of bibles verses in favor of sola scriptura.
      The history of the Canon cannot support sola scriptura.
      Rarity of written materials in the early church does not support sola scriptura.
      Mass illiteracy up to the mid 19th century does not support sola scriptura.
      This is all spelled out in more detail in the link I gave you.

    Wait a minute, don't say we never read the Bible.... Pentecost is Our (The Catholic Church) Birthday; The Mass came before the Bible was written. The Bible came to be about 250 to 300 yrs after Christ death. The Catholic Church put the Bible together it's our book. The Bible was handwritten, and protected, they didn't have the printing press yet. The Mass is the Bible, the greatest gift given thru the Ministerial Priesthood (the true body and true blood of His son Jesus Christ) given at Holy Communion to us from God. The rosary is a prayer of the lives of Jesus and Mary it's in the Bible. The priest teaches the Gospels at Mass from the Bible. You throw that saying around that Catholics don't read the Bible, that's not nice, but what we are is saturated in the Bible and by God's grace go forth and live it. JMJ❤

    I get it. Sola Scripture has to be caricatured and discredited as a way to avoid accountability for those dogmas which are clearly unbiblical. Destroy Sola Scriptura and elevate Sola Ecclesia. I get it.

      " This won't have baptism, that denies the efficacy of the Lord's supper; a third puts a world between this and the last judgment; others teach that Jesus Christ is not God; some say this, others that; and there are almost as many sects and beliefs as there are heads." This was Martin Luther regretting Sola Scriptura.
