England vs Iceland 1-2 Goals & Highlights
England have been knocked out of Euro 2016 after a 2-1 defeat by Iceland in one of the biggest shocks in European Championship history.
Wayne Rooney gave Roy Hodgson's side a fourth-minute lead from the penalty spot at the Allianz Riviera on Monday, but two goals in 12 minutes turned the match in Iceland's favour, setting up a quarter-final clash against France.
Ragnar Sigurdsson got them back on level terms (six) before a mistake by Joe Hart allowed a tame shot from Kolbeinn Sigthorsson to put the minnows in front (18).
Harry Kane headed straight at Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson in the second half but England barely threatened his goal as their tournament ended with a whimper.
Defeat in such ignominious circumstances means the inquest into their elimination will now begin, with manager Hodgson confirming his resignation minutes after the final whistle.
Meanwhile, Iceland's fairytale tournament continues and they can look forward to a quarter-final meeting with host nation France at the Stade de France on Sunday.
Hodgson made six changes from the goalless draw against Slovakia, opting to recall Raheem Sterling, and the winger earned England an early penalty, latching on to Daniel Sturridge's pass before tumbling under the challenge of Halldorsson.
And Rooney, on the occasion he equalled David Beckham's record of 115 England caps for an outfield player, made no mistake from 12 yards.
England were ahead for just 84 seconds as an Aron Gunnarsson long throw was flicked on by Kari Arnason and turned home by Ragnar Sigurdsson.
It got better for Iceland 12 minutes later when Sigthorsson slotted his side in front, leaving England stunned. The Nantes striker was allowed too much space on the edge of the box but Hart, who got a hand to the shot, allowed it to squirm over the line.
England dominated possession as in previous matches but once again struggled to carve out chances.
A volley from Kane forced Halldorsson into a smart save while Chris Smalling headed over from close range at the back post, but Iceland's stubborn rear-guard comfortably saw in half-time.
Jack Wilshere and Jamie Vardy were introduced after the break but Iceland created the second half's first big opportunity when Hart denied Ragnar Sigurdsson's overhead kick from point-blank range.
Dele Alli misfired from 12 yards as England's frustrations mounted and time ticked away; Iceland succeeding in forcing their opponents into hopeful shots from distance
A cute pass from Wilshere presented Kane with his clearest opportunity with 11 minutes to play, but the Tottenham striker placed his header straight at Halldorsson.
Gunnarsson had the chance to exacerbate England's embarrassment, breaking through on goal and holding off the challenge of Wilshere, but the Cardiff City midfielder saw his effort palmed clear by Hart.
Vardy almost nabbed a dramatic leveller in stoppage time but fantastic defending by Arnason re-directed the striker's header out for a corner.
The final whistle was greeted by jubilant celebrations by the Iceland players and staff, while England's players were left dejected and Hodgson headed straight down the tunnel.

I came here after England loss to Italy. My word, the team has really changed for the better since this game.
That is why that song became so popular: "Looking back on when we first met. I cannot escape and I cannot forget. Southgate, you're the one. You still turn me on. Football's coming home again". This was the game that most fans gave up hope forever as the final straw after 15 years of continuous play. Then Southgate came along and now the team is unrecognisable.
@@carlybishop6160 Yes, England plays something else right now, and the atmosphere seem much better in the team, but it's still not enough for a major trophy, I believe. We shall see at the 2022 WC in Qatar, if England finally came to fruition and win something. But you can't get a better chance than playing 6 out of 7 matches, on your home soil.

1 - I have mixed feelings on Wembley. I think it helps when it is quiet but I think it might have pushed the pressure too far in the final. Look at how well they played in Rome. They played just as well in not better.
2 - It is interesting to see that the best teams such as Italy and France are aging. We still have one of the youngest and least experienced teams in comparison and can only get better. Not sure how many new players are coming through for those other countries still.
3 - They might not win or even get to the final in 2022 but the future is still bright due to the current consistency. Look at Germany when they won the World Cup in 2014, they got to the semis of the their 4 previous major tournaments (including one final) before they finally won the World Cup. Although looking further into the future whenever Southgate steps down, I can't see the next in line to the throne in place which I would have expected by now.
4 - I am glad people are sceptical because I think Southgate was spot on with: "England is Peter Pan in reverse, when you believe in England, they die". In hindsight I think on the long run it might have been best to lose their first final. I think if they had won, there would be too much expectation on them to win the next time rather than give them the space to do well without the added pressure.

The English team play worst on home soil considering the pressure the public and media put on them is huge, they're just pressured to park the bus, and not make mistakes instead of try playing, and they know how previous footballers including Southgate the manager are still being insulted for mistakes be it penalty misses or getting red cards like David Beckham who was booed, hurled abuse on pitch during his club return even, and had effigies of him burnt for years.
Only time this England team looks free, and not constipated, was at Rome against Ukraine.
The racist comments Sancho, Rashford and Saka received online was awful, and because of their young ages they wont get the treatment others received, but if it was the older players Maguire and Kane that missed, lol the amount of abuse online and offline they'd be getting right now and when they went back to their clubs.
There was literally zero expectations on them during the 2018 World Cup well....... because you can see how shit they were in 2016 Euros, Southgate made a miracle honestly.

This was a great moment for England. It was the same for Germany in the early naughties, they lost some bad games and so replaced the team, manager and tactics. That team went on to win the world cup later.

Das war ja an einem Montagabend und in dieser Woche fuhr meine Klasse ins Schullandheim. Ich konnte aber erst am Dienstag fahren, weil ich am Montag noch bei einem Konzert in der Schule gespielt habe.
Danach kamen wir nach Hause und ich konnte meinen Augen nicht glauben, als ich diesen Sieg sah, während ich meinen Koffer packte.
Als ich dann im Schullandheim ankam, erzählte ich allen, dass Island gegen England gewonnen hatte, und ich werde nie deren ungläubige Blicke vergessen, weil sie das mangels Handy nicht sehen konnten :D
