    this is 60s pop at its best, uncomplicated lyrics and a British vocal. appreciate the breakdown. 🎶🏆❤️

    Micky's drumming! He is always so underrated as a musician/songwriter.

    I think this is one of the most underrated Monkees songs. All the parts complement each other well in the final version. I like the subtle little notes that Nez picks outs amid the general shimmery wash of the 12-string. And, with the bass isolated, you can hear the Motown influence - the riff clearly owes a great debt to "My Girl."
    They played a great, more upbeat version of it on the 1967 tour. Micky's drum part is very strong and assured on the Live 1967 version.

    I am enjoying your deconstructions so much, because I love most of the Monkees' recordings. I still know every word and can remember the music, from the repeated playing of my records when I was 12/13 years old. I have a question: did they all read music? Peter surely did, and Davy played trumpet in a band when he was a child, so I guess he did. If they couldn't read music, how did they perform live, or record Headquarters? Now, my dad, rest his soul, played guitar "by ear". Unfortunately, none of we kids inherited his ability, although we all sang fairly well. Doesn't the Monkees' musical abilities put the lie to the old "they're not really a band" trope? Thank you.

      I am sure Peter did, as he was familiar with and could play many classical pieces on the piano. Mike was definitely the 2nd-most musically-gifted of the four, although I doubt he knew how to read music, being a guitarist and songwriter, but I could be wrong. I highly doubt Micky and Davy could read music, though I never knew about that trumpet fact! Maybe Davy could partially read music 🤔

      Also yes, the statement that "they aren't a real band" is simply false--how could a "fake band" break the record for most number 1 albums in a single year? 😆

      The overwhelming majority of rock artists do not read music. Beatles, Stones, Dylan, you name it. They know what the chords are on their instruments and that's all you need to create rock n roll.

      Thanks to all of you for replying. It's so nice of you. The story about Davy playing a trumpet is from an interview with his sisters, who said he took lessons and marched with the band when he was a little boy. It wasn't clear if it was a school band or one in their community.

      At the Time of Headquarters, Mike did not read music. This is proven by Peter saying Mike sang out the horn part in Shades Of Gray and Peter notated it for the horn player.

    Great track from Headquarters! Thx so much!!! Wonder what Mike was playing? There were photos of him during the sessions playing a Rickenbacker and of course The Gretsch!

    Keep up the awesome work! Will you be doing some of the "unreleased" tracks, such as All Of Your Toys?

      I'm not exactly sure when and how unreleased tracks will be decided, though I will definitely do them at one point. I was planning to do "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" right after Headquarters, and "All Of Your Toys" when I get around to the Missing Links albums.

    Why aren’t the background vocals separated as usual ?

    • @septylite
      @septylite  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sometimes the background vocals are mixed in with the lead vocals too much to the point where my separations sound poor.

      I see
      That’s too bad as this song would have been great to hear the background vocals. I thought with the new AI technology it could separate everything easily…..let’s hope it gets better soon 😁
      Great work on your part!
