Another classic Mike track!❤ Peter's contributions to these sessions cannot be overstated.👍👍

As Nez said in his autobiography, Peter made Headquarters come to life!!!

Peter was so talented. Interesting that he really seemed to only play the bass with the Monkees live. He could have easily played the bass parts in the studio, but he already had to contribute so much.

@michellerodeghier8071 I don't get the sense that Peter was terribly interested in bass playing. He seemed more interested in guitar; banjo and keyboards. And not to diss Peter, who was the band's most prolific musician. But in this case Chip was the better and more melodic bassist.
Nez pointed out that Peter ended up with the bass in the band because he was the only one in the group initially who knew how to play it.

Was so excited to hear the isolated acoustic 12 string guitar part for this song!!!! Your isolated tracks prove just how versatile Peter was
    Thank you

I love the energy of Mike's original version of this (his) song, but in this version, Micky's vocal is fantastic, as usual, and the backing vocals are great. Thanks again for posting this and for keeping the Monkees' music alive!!

This is another one where the original mix was just mush. It wasn’t until there was a stereo remix (I can’t remember which later compilation had the best one) but it was only then that the tune had some decent clarity to it. Definitely should have been on Headquarters and has always disappointed me that it wasn’t. Another excellent job on this deconstruction Septyl. I love that we can hear all the intricate musicianship these guys truly had and your personal knack for breaking it all apart for us is stellar! Keep up the great work!

IMO, the best mix can be found on the 2006 Rhino deluxe 2 CD version of Headquarters. In fact, the 2006 Headquarters deluxe remaster is the one to own.

@ greyhounddude. Maybe that’s the one I was thinking of. There have been multiple mixes over the years, most of them subpar. For the longest time the most decent one was the remix of the Listen To The Band box set. But then another mix came out with a more clean vocal and instrument separation and runs a tad longer (though the harpsichord part starts a second off if I recall). I think it’s the one you’ve mentioned.

@@painter8237 that Listen to the Band box set is great. There are a couple of things on that set that still exclusive to that set. The remastering is outstanding throughout. But the 2006 Rhino 2-CD deluxe remasters of the first four albums are the way to go.

@greyhounddude Agreed! It’s an excellent box set. I remember getting it when it came out in 1991 and was thrilled to have all that material all in one place on compact disc, most of which hadn’t been available for years let alone on CD up to that point. Andrew Sandoval who oversaw the remixing with Bill Ingot has said that he regrets doing it and that he should have just stuck with the original masters. I have to disagree as I think he improved a number of tracks. Just one that comes to mind is “As We Go Along” which cleaned up and centered Micky’s vocal, which is absolutely outstanding on that particular track. However, Disc 4 of that set was a little light in my opinion. They definitely had enough room to throw on a few more tracks from Changes and Pool It, plus include the one-off holiday track Christmas Is My Time Of Year. But despite these few cons, it’s a stellar box set!

It's kind of fascinating how the isolated drum track almost sounds like a hip-hop beat.
Just to clarify on the credits, based on my understanding from the Headquarters Sessions boxset and Andrew Sandoval's book(s), Peter only played acoustic guitar on the first version of the song (w/ Michael Nesmith's lead vocal). Nesmith played the repeated acoustic 12-string line which I believe was overdubbed at the same time as some of the harpsichord parts. The electric guitar part is also played on a 12-string.

@NikLachance by "internet", you mean Wikipedia. According to Andrew Sandoval's sessionography it's John London. Mr. Sandoval produced and compiled the Monkees reissues and box sets for Rhino Records. He worked directly with Mike, Micky, Peter and Davy as their manager. He also wrote the day-to-day book on the band. He is a friend and I defer to his knowledge.
