Cleaning expert, Melissa Maker addresses the challenging issue of removing gum from a variety of 'hosts' including hair, carpet/upholstery and clothing. This is a very popular question and we have been asked multiple times about how to handle gum removal.
3 different methods are demonstrated to show you exactly how to get rid of gum! It is possible with a little bit of work and the right tools. Enjoy!

Answer:
What you need-
1) Gum disaster
2) Boiling vinegar
3) Water
4) Dish soap
5) Paper towels
6) Oil
7) Fork
8) Toothbrush
For Carpet/Upholstery:
Use a fork and pick out as much gum as possible. Put 1 cup of vinegar into a kettle and let boil. It MUST be boiling vinegar! Get a bowl of water and a toothbrush to help clean the stain. Take your toothbrush, dip it into the kettle and brush up and away on the gum stain. Use the bowl of water to rinse your toothbrush in between brushes. For bad stains, pour a bit of vinegar directly on the stain and brush up and towards the center then blot with a paper towel. Afterwards, you can pretreat the stain like anything else. We like to use dish soap and a bit of water to remove any remaining residue.
For Clothing:
Throw the clothing article into a plastic bag and leave it in a freezer for 24 hours. The gum will freeze and become easier to break off. Take the garment and bend it to crack the gum, making it easier to pick away as much of it as possible. Any remaining gum can be brushed off with the side of a fork or a dull knife. You can use dish washing liquid and cool water or a stain remover/detergent to pretreat it then throw it in the wash.
For Hair:
Tie back unaffected hair. Pour the oil onto the affected area over a bowl or container. Use your fingers to pull the hair away from the gum. Use a wide tooth comb to brush out any leftover gum pieces. The oil, along with the natural oil in our hair, counteracts the adhesion of the gum.
I tried the hot vinegar thing but with hot water instead and it still worked like a charm. Thanks a lot.
I had gum on my new sofa that I found weeks later from the kids. I used a small scraper and removed all the gum I could then used the boiling vinegar with the new toothbrush. It worked Great and looks new again. Thanks for the great tip.

The technique of taking out gum off you hair is awesome! Now i know what to do. When i was like 6 years old i used to sleep with gum in my mouth and when i wake up it was in my hair! Every single time this happen to me my mom needed to cut a full peace of hair with the gum she wasn't able to remove, so imagine hoy my hair might look!
In my experience it seems that the longer the gum has been chewy, the harder it is to get out. The longer it’s chewed the stickier it seems to get. Thanks for your awesome tips. Now to tackle my gum problem!

This worked on my favourite bedding, i kno u might be thinking "WHY DID U HAVE GUM IN BED!?!?" Well i would say the same thing but i forgot it was in my mouth... Now i can use my favourite bedding without the chewing gum being there :D thanks melissa

IT WORKED!!!! Boiling water preceded by scraping (and used duster buster to suck up pieces). I had to use it on a brand new light gray couch!!!!

This just helped me get gum out of my hair but I used olive oil! Thanks!
I added your and my own thing to it; I had accidently got some gum on my sofa and I started freaking out. I saw your videos and others and I came up with boiling some water and then on the side having a small plate of soap, baby oil and virgin oil and a toothbrush I dipped the toothbrush in the water and then just got a tiny bit of soap and oil and started brushing at the sofa. Came out like new :)
You should do a video on how to get dye out of a stone counter top. We had foil party decorations get wet and bleed onto the surface. I discovered nothing would lift it except hairspray! I was amazed. :)

I watched your video, which is titled: How To Remove Gum - From Hair, Clothing, Carpet and Upholstery (Easy Cleaning Ideas) Clean My Space.... unfortunately I need to know how to remove gum from a cloth couch cushion, and I think that this gum was there for quite some time. The fabric of the couch is like small corduroy so there are tiny grooves on it. Do you have any recommendations? Also, it is a cream colored couch... don't want to have any oily spots, and can't afford professional cleaning.

freezing definitely does not work all the time. It only works if you have a thick piece of gum stuck to the clothes. if you have a thin layer of gum, it wont just 'crack' and flake off.....it also won't scrape off.
For a thin layer, you can heat up water and melt the gum. Start slowly peeling it off. A bit will stay there. Rinse with cold water and try to scrape off small bits. This worked for me. Although it might not work for everyone.

A quicker way to remove gum from carpet is to set an ice cube on it so it get's really hard/brittle, scrape it up with a fork or butter knife and then vacuum to pick up tiny stray pieces. My son has gotten gum on the carpet several times.
Now ill remove the gum from my cats furr.

WD40, or similar lubricant spray will remove Gum and most things that are oil based I have just removed Sudocrem from my carpet. Don.t put washing up liquid or stain removers on carpets. , so it might get the stain out but when it dries it stays in the carpet and attracts dirt, and no amount of rinsing will get it out because it keeps foaming up. So after a few weeks there will be a dark patch where you put washing up liquid, I use half teaspoon of washing powder to a litre of warm water,
