  • Cambodian Princess Soma Norodom reveals details of exposing government corruption and royal infighting in her book, "Royal Rebel,” in a riveting interview with “At the Table” host Audrey Galex. Born in Cambodia, Princess Norodom escaped with her family as the Communist Khmer Rouge regime took power in 1975, and was raised in California, knowing nothing about her royal lineage. Only when she returned to Cambodia to help her ailing father fulfill his dream to die in his homeland, was she fully made aware of her ancestral culture and heritage. As Cambodia’s first English-language radio interviewer and then as a columnist for an English-language daily, her work sparked accusations of incitement, a story that she shares in rich detail to shed light on her on-going quest for truth and respect for human rights.

Like Princess Soma, I want the same thing for Cambodia, but Norodom isn’t the same like before because their political party is backed by the prime minister. I have so many relatives working for the Cambodian government and my families are divided because of their political differences. It’s true, we need to be United if we want to see peace in Cambodia. I’m happy Princess Soma is a rebel, we need more of her!

I like how she said "we grew as american and had to learn english, we listened to parents in Khmer" I wish some groups still thought like that.
I also wish my ancestors spoke their native language, but maybe for them, keeping their native tongue was their barrier to becoming part of the greater community of america.
