misssunshine11 ,Kalinga(Orissa) and Tamil cultures had enormous influence on south east Asian States...Tamil pallava kingdom had family relations with khemer ,champs kingdoms and they were called "naga vamshi" kshatriyas ...the Indian rulers were of "surya vamshi" and "Chandra vamshi" kshatriyas.....old Malayan scripts were influences by Tamil brahmin scripts..the 'kalinga' area of India have a festival called "Bali yatra" or the journey towards Bali...Thailand,Cambodia,Vietnam,Indonesia ,Malaysia, southern Philippines were all part of a greater indic influence...its really sad ,seeing the present pathetic condition of India ,conquered and ruled for over 800 years ,people ignore about their countrie's glorious past..lacking self esteem,hygiene,discipline..and many convert to semitic religions without even knowing what their forefathers were practising and then starting to abuse own culture..!!

Sovanda Ket lmfao you funny kiddo. Most of Khmer history is a lied water down by White Yapheth seeds. Khmer /Khom-mae aboriginal to Cambodia/Kambujadas (mean Son Of Kam in Samkirt). Nagar Vat (Angkor Wat water down term ) built around 900-1200 B.C not 1200 A.D taught by your Western master. Oldest mention of Kambujadas in samkirt dated back 5000 B.C (over 7,000 years ago) and yes we witness the great flood mention in the Bible and samkirt too....

Good oral history teller. Thank you professor for sharing good Khmer history to the world. Just additional information, Theravada Buddhism has been in Cambodia since the 2nd AD or prehab early than that when Cambodia was known as Norkor Phnom or Funan. There were a few intelligent Khmer Buddhist monks who went to translate thousand Buddhist books to Chinese in the 5 BC. One of those monk was Ven. Sanghavara, Sanghavaraman or Sanghapala សង្ឃបាល ឬ សង្ឃវរ្ម័ន in Khmer, known in Chinese as Sanji Polo. He translated a book called Vimuttimagga វិមុត្តិមគ្គ or "Path of Freedom" from a Pali or Sanskrit into Chinese. The original Pali or Sanskrit book was believed to have lost, the only book left is the one in Chinese text which many scholars have used it to translate into English and their own languages. Thus, it means Buddhism has been in Cambodia for centuries.

According to Khmer custom, all temple builders must not a slave. They must be a honorable people. Slaves were serving as caretakers to maintain the temple to earn their status in their next life. According to Chinese diplomat, the guard didn't allow any former convict or even thieves to enter the temple gate. How could they employed slave to build the temple?

In India and in the East the concept of slavery never existed. The concept of Dasa or servant was totally different and more like a paid service where the Dasa or Servant could ask for freedom by paying of the debt etc. Mostly the Dasa or servants could easily reach higher status depending upon their knowledge and hard work.
The Concept of slavery as found in Middle East and west was most inhumane where person of different ethnicity were subjugated for worse treatment throughout their life with no release till death. The slavery became more prevalent after Muslim invasions.
Some how this aspect is never highlighted by western historians who claim to show western civilisations or society as more advanced as compared to the Indian or its eastern neighbours.

Demon William you are right ? I think u are foreigners not Khmer pp. but ur education is acceptable. Khmer is not a slave just not other said, they look down on Khmer pp just because they jealous of this origin culture. All the temple were built by Khmer pp, Khmer citizens, not slave from other countries or where. They have skilled before they build they have learn even the carvings stone skill from 2 universities, Barphrom or Taphrom just like u see in this video and one more is Preah Khan temple if u come visit Cambodia don’t forget to visit these universities. Don’t believe in history in wiki. It’s wrote by France. They don’t know about the real Khmer history.

Hi Professor- The Siamese in Ayudthaya period were the Mix blood of Tai(Thai) , Mon , Old Khmere, Loas & the Thai people from the South. You missed this Information. Therefore, the Rise of Thai ( Siamese) kingdom happened because the compromise in political powers among those who already lived in this region( Mon, Thai , Old Khmer and The Thai from the southern Kingdom of Nakornsri Thammarat.) The Siamese kings ( who had infact , 25-50 %Khmer blood ) accepted some old Khmer culture into their royal court. In around year AD 1440 a Siamese King went to defeat Angkor Wat and brought all its Citizens including The Angkor wat royals to Thailand. ( From around this period the Khmer kingdom had been under Siamese power till around AD 1935 . )

    • @abmong
      @abmong 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Also another interesting thing not many remember. The Funan kingdom that preceded the Khmer Empire was founded by a Naga Queen Neang Neak. The people of Funan who legend said were Nagas are probably the Mon or closely related. The Naga of Funan are probably related to the Naga people of Nagaland in India. All have stories saying they came from Yunnan in southern China. Who else came from Yunnan? The Tai or Thai. Naga, Mon, Thai may share the same Yunnan Hill Tribes ancestory.
Not sure if Chenla/Khmer were also originally another Yunnan Naga tribe or came from elsewhere, but the Chinese recorded Chenla as being a vassals of Funan before later rebelling and conquering Funan and founded Khmer Empire.

Great history lesson, thanks for giving Khmer their due. Often times these little countries which once were great empires got swallowed up by their aggressive neighbors and some don't even live to tell about it, in our modern day term "wiped off the map".
I sea Southeast Asian as one tribe just by looking at their facial features. The Khmer, Malaysian, Indonesian, Philippines, Siamese and people of Champa. Then the Chinese blood seeped in and now they all looked Chinese, well, the upper-crust of these societies anyway.

My reaction was always, “Well, I am Cambodian.” 🙄 And then they’re like, “I know, but not all Cambodians actually look like the faces on the stone temple walls…” So here I am on TH-cam searching for videos that might describe what Angkor Cambodians actually look like. But more recently, someone actually said I resemble a specific female stone image on the walls of Preah Khan temple. Maybe one day I will get to see it in person and decide for myself if I truly resemble or not.

I don't agree on the part where he described that Khmer Hindu kings were oppressive towards their subject and the peasants were denied many basic rights and the whole society was hereditary. Therefore, there were mass conversions from Hinduism to Theravada Buddhism to evade the social hierarchy. Its totally wrong. Both Hinduism (Vaishavaites and Shaivites) and Buddhism co-existed among Khmer kings and the Khmer kings switched back and forth among these faiths. For example, Suryavarman converted to Vaishnavite Hinduism from Shaivite and thus dedicated the Angkor Wat to Vishnu. Similarly, Indravarman converted to Buddhism later and Jayavarman II was Shaivist. Similarly, the subjects switched between these faiths according to the faith of the kings without any mass conversions and hierarchical oppressions!

Yes, nobody really knows how ancient people really built these great monuments, whether they were built by slaves or not. If the builders were slaves, could they build with such devotion and love? Maybe it was part of worship. They really thought that the king was divine so they came together to build it for this god king. The alien theorists would say they had helps from outer space. It's all speculations, really. We don't really know.

Since the establishment of Ayutthaya in the 14th, Ayutthaya had never lost to Angkors. In fact, Thais even colonized Khmers from the 15th to the 19th when the French came and Thailand made a treaty to give away "the land" to the French which today is Cambodia. In Cambodian history, this period is between the 15th - 19th is known as "Dark age", where Khmers were greatly under the influences of Thais.
Some Khmers still don't know that they used to be Thai slaves before the colonial era?
At present, part of the Khmer's thinking was memorized by the IO movement of the Khmer authorities who made up various stories that the Khmers were the rulers who created various cultures of this land in the Southeast. Even the land which is the first source of civilization, such as India, is still affected by these Khmer movements claim the culture as rebellious as we have heard it before.

It still used until today in Khmer Language to refer to Java Island or its inhabitant. On the other hand, Malay or Melayu was called by Khmer as Malayu not Chvea. Don't get me wrong, Me myself was a Sumatran Malay not Javanese but i think the term Chvea itself was referred to Shailendra dynasty of Central Java. It was supported by several historian such as Georgr Codes

Consider the migration route and the planet as a whole - where people had to constantly migrate and find food - then, when they were able to grow enough food and raise animals in one spot, that was when they started to think about civilization, making art as they went, building these structures to make their lives seemingly more and more divine, connected to the spiritual realm every culture seems to possess and in awe by.

Westerners were always mentioned of using slave to build sacred temple or such in Cambodia. In Khmer belief (until these days), building sacred is a step closer to Gods or Heaven. How could they forced slave to do such work?
In their tradition, if the person cannot or having no time for sacred duty, one can hire somebody to do it on their behalf and shared the deeds together. By understanding this tradition, one would understand of having no force labor in building sacred temple. However, they were having a group called Pol of God which is meant "army or people of God". This group is a slave of God who were responsible for maintaining those temples. Most of these people were prisoners of war and from many disadvantage groups or donated personal slave to under temple's or religious authority.

The word slaves in Cambodian did not the have the same meaning as in English. It is more closer to servants and what we used as polite, first-person pronoun. It is also meant " I " or "me". The religions, themselves, are diverse. While the ruling class is hindu. There are many buddhist worshippers, and occasionally Buddhist King. Suryavaraman I is Buddhist, Suryavaraman II is a Hindu.
