It might seem theoretical but it's all true. I was recently forced out of my job for objecting to speech censorship imposed by a newly formed "diversity team". They did exactly this: imposed a speech code in the name of making people feel included and welcome. Some of the now-forbidden words included things like "guys" and "peanut gallery". They told us they were "educating us" to understand that those words were problematic. Their justification was that they work with different types of clients including "African Americans" (their term, not mine). My boss even admitted he didn't like walking on eggshells around people, but felt it was necessary. When I objected, it became clear they were working to force me out, so I resigned. The irony that by doing this, they had made me (and other employees) feel unwelcome and excluded was totally lost on them. It's absolutely true, the company became more "diverse" and "inclusive" by excluding someone who had a different point of view. More Orwellian it could not get. I eventually had to hire a lawyer to write a demand letter to get them to pay my last invoice - justice apparently doesn't mean paying the salaries of objectionable people. This stuff might seem crazy but it's dangerous and evil, and we need to fight it.

The entire thing is theoretical, since the idea that this leads to any kind of functioning society that would be desirable to anyone is pure fantasy. Just like all the forms of communism over history, it looks like somebody's utopia on paper but ends up being a living hell for everyone except the very highest elites.

J T G American Capitalism is leading us to a living hell for everyone but the wealthy elites, so what’s your solution?

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@filmjazz I don't necessarily think capitalism is the answer. Maybe we can start by not instituting an obviously and acutely destructive and divisive ideology, then when we can talk to one another without being mired in nonsensical obsessions with privilege and oppression, perhaps we will come up with a solution.

Such a drag and I'm sorry. We sometimes have to resist quietly, or else like in this case they win.
Even if you say 'guys' by accident can they fire you, ehh not really. That's not legal. If they were so dumb you could go after them for a huge court settlement and not have to work for a year or two. Therefore, resist but be clever.
And remember that almost nobody putting these nominal 'justice' movements forward personally believes in them, they don't sincerely believe these hollow fake words - and among these people you know, there are more allies than real enemies.

Talking isn't going to fix this. Trump and the Right understand this, but America didn't like him because he is "unpolished". what liberals fail to understand about conservatives is when we see a problem we work to change it immediately with the means we have at hand within our moral limits. Conveying the philosophical reasons behind our actions are secondary to solving the problem ahead of us. This misunderstanding of our motives is the source of contention between all of our conflicts.
      Example
Illegal or mass immigration - We think it harms poor citizens that should be helped first, and with no checks criminals can slip into the country along with the good. Too many immigrants strain social systems to the point of impotence that help no one. Our duty is to help our fellow citizens before lending a hand somewhere else when applicable. Not that we blindly hate "brown" people or are xenophobic.

After watching just one video, I could see that he had taken the study of these things very seriously. I am always impressed by how well he makes this stuff understandable for a person like me who most often reacts "What f***ing nonsense this is." That's my limit. He, though, spends the time to get to know why and how people fall for this stuff.

Excellent talk as usual. Unfortunately, anyone ostensibly sane and rational, who has been convinced racism is everywhere and embraced this cult, also tends to be extremely unwilling or unable to listen to long exposures or criticisms of the ideas under the hood of the beliefs they’ve accepted.
Good god, my dad who is a moderate scientifically minded centrist, won’t accept raw data on policing and the video of white Tony Timpa dying in almost identical circumstances to George Floyd, to at least pause for thought on the idea that black people are being oppressed by near genocidal policing across the West.
BLM has tapped into his moral and emotional circuits and the fact that everyone in power agrees likewise, means he just will not accept the truth.
Therefore, these speeches are preaching to the converted and will not get past the wall of taboo and polarization which says to disagree IS racist and the arguments against this stuff, Russian disinformation and Trumpian “white supremacist” propaganda. Critical race theory has won hearts and minds though emotional appeal and the erroneous veneer of being a continuation of the just and heroic civil rights movements of yesteryear. Then closed the door on scepticism by branding it as sinister lies and propaganda from shady foreign influences or as akin to the naysayers who supported slavery, Jim Crow, segregation and Apartheid when Wilberforce, MLK and Mandela were fighting those actual racist systems.
Therefore, sending this video to even a moderate who has embraced this stuff, is almost certainly not going to work.
I wish we could come up with a simple but effective list of questions to pose, from Lindsay’s work.
I can think of a couple from his talk right here, but if we collectively compile as many as possible. Then just pose them to as many moderates as possible, we could start winning back some hearts and minds.
    EG:
    1. Do you think anyone is qualified to judge your private, unseen thoughts and intentions and legislate against you, punish you or deny you opportunities or exclude you based on their judgement?
    2. Do you believe in socially engineering absolute equal outcomes across every single identity, in every single corner of society?
    3. Do you believe that everything involves identity based power politics, EVERYTHING!
    4. Do you believe we should discriminate to ensure power based politics, (as manifested in unseen thoughts, language and “systems”), NEVER favour white people, straight people and men?
    5. Do you believe that people who disagree with all of the above or merely decline to support it, are complicit in white supremacy?
    6. Do you believe that, under that definition of white supremacy and complicity, we need legislation or a revolution, to topple white supremacy and those who are complicit in it?
There must be more and better questions, if anyone can think of any.
The point is, posing a question they couldn’t possibly agree with and asking politely if they agree, opens the door to showing them what is under the hood of this ideology. But I know, just sending a video of James Lindsay or Douglas Murray, or Brett Weinstein, is too much content (sometimes hours of listening), comes on a platform (TH-cam) seen as unreliable by those who still rely on the mainstream media, and will instantly be suspected as right wing or Russian disinformation, due to the gaslighting of the trusted legacy media, Democrats, and the unanimity of opinion in almost every education institution, political class and educated, professional elite in polite society across the West. Most of whom saw Trump and Brexit, got a bit deranged by both, saw the George Floyd video and embraced BLM, and are now incapable of seeing anything else due to extreme polarization and the idea that counter argument is all disinformation by shady Russian influences and racist Trumpite forces who are the real threat.
A list of probing, pointed questions are probably the best way to cut through this Gordian Knot.
I hope James sees this comment, agrees and can compile such a list for us to use on our woke loved ones.

I think this is a great idea. I’ve been trying to have these conversations with people around me and such a list would make braking the barrier so much easier. I don’t think I’ve been successful every time at braking the barrier, but one time I just showed them the Ibram Kendi quote about discrimination being okay if it leads to equity, and asked them if they agreed with it. It was an instant “no” and the conversation went well after that. I hope Lindsay sees your message.

Again it's the rare believer who wants to be cornered by a racist. It's clear to you and me, but I've blown a couple of sincere attempts to discuss by pulling out too many facts, too fast. Ugh. @@paigemccormick6519 yes, facts and data don’t beat emotion, elite consensus which has its own set of counter facts and data and the poisoning of the well whereby inconvenient facts and data can be dismissed as lies and propaganda.
I’m English so the situation is slightly different in my country but the solution is probably the same.
Basically, our media (especially the BBC) has a far longer history of reliability and impartiality than anything on the other side of the pond. For people of my parents generation, if the BBC doesn’t consider the death of Tony Timpa, policing data showing very few police murders of any race, massive crime rates in the black community, very high interracial violence from black to white and very low from white to black, BLM/Antifa riots, intimidation and terrorism on a scale far far far higher than the tiny Charlottesville rally, to be of consequence. And continue to refuse to give people like James Lindsay a platform, whereas continue to platform those who say we live in a white supremacy, then that narrative pretty much becomes the solid gold standard of truth.
As presented by the most unbiased and professional media organization on earth.
TH-cam videos of James Lindsay or Brett Weinstein or the Sam Harris Podcast, just don’t compete.
It’s like arguing against the clergy in the Middle Ages. Futile. The moral and institutional authority of the cult is unassailable.
The BBC says that Trump is a Hitler type character, BLM are a legitimate civil rights movement and anyone saying otherwise is either ignorant, a Russian bot or lying to benefit Trump’s insidious administration.
So facts and data are absolutely useless.
They have the few videos of black men dying in police interactions and the one statistic showing black people are stopped, frisked, arrested, incarcerated and die at police hands at a higher level than their percentage of the population.
      Case closed.
I, like you have tried arguing with logic and data. Been told I’m wrong so used Heather MacDonald articles, Sam Harris and Glenn Loury podcasts and Mike Nyna’s documentaries about Pluckrose, Lindsay and Boghossian’s work.
      All to no avail.
The harder I try, the more entrenched they become and more likely they are to flip out and call me racist. Ending the conversation.
      So, I stepped back.
Now just occasionally ask such probing questions and don’t even expect an answer. I just respectfully listen to them wax lyrical about racist oppression and ask if they agree with a tenet of BLM/CRT and step back.
      Sporadically planting seeds of doubt.
Not trying to win the argument, just let them speak and each time poke a tiny hole of potential doubt in their ideology.
As an example of how this has been playing out for me.
My 80 year old moderate, centrist dad came out as fully in support for BLM. I made long detailed arguments with data. He shook his head and said I was wrong. So I linked him to a Heather MacDonald article. He shook his head harder and said she was an arch conservative who thinks climate change and COVID19 aren’t real problems, therefore she wasn’t credible. So I sent him a Glenn Loury podcast with John McWhorter. Two black Americans, one a liberal, both saying similar things but by this time dad’s wall had gone up. I doubt he watched the podcast and if he did, he probably dismissed them as having been hoodwinked by disinformation in the age of Trump.
So I asked my dad what he would consider a respectable source. He told me the BBC, The Economist, The Telegraph and so on. Basically Britain’s old, established legacy media.
So I now always keep my eye out for the occasional glitch in that matrix. When those outlets occasionally air the kind of things Lindsay says. Which they very occasionally do.
Then I read the article, try to find one glaring piece of evidence and impossible to deny condemnation of CRT/BLM send him a link, cite the data in the article and ask him if he agrees with a tenet of CRT/BLM the article highlights as dangerous or absurd.
I rarely get an answer but I think, it’s the best, indeed only way to change his mind.
Find a source he told me personally that he trusts and keep incrementally chipping away with data and questions from those sources.
It would be a slow process no matter what but it’s made all the more slower because the legacy media rarely airs such heresy and the heretic writing the article cannot be obviously right wing or have ever faced racism accusations, which is often the case.
      Slim pickings.
A list of pointed questions we could all use that wouldn’t require linking to a heretic, but could be shown to be relevant questions by citing a critical race theorist, would be almost bulletproof.

Mr. Lindsay, I greatly appreciate your intricate knowledge of this deep, broad, and, please forgive me here, diverse, subject matter. It can be difficult to navigate more than 150 years of this foolish rhetoric to understand exactly where we find ourselves now, but your ability to speak clearly and logically about it is an absolute godsend. I can see your disdain and abject loathing of these subjects in your demeanor and hear it in your voice. I feel as you do, sir, and am working to grasp this knowledge to be able to fight and win against these deranged forces. Please do not relent in your pursuit of disseminating this information. I honestly do not know how you have been able to stomach the literature that you have had to digest in order to acquire the knowledge that you possess. Kings to you, sir. Kings to you.

After thinking about it, critical race theory can be described with one word: paranoia. It's when you assume everyone is judging you or hates you just because of your skin color regardless of whether it's true or not.

Don't think most of the ones pushing it actually believe it, though. They don't. It's a tool to claim power and destroy their enemies-nothing more. If you find yourself talking to one of their puppetmasters or would-be puppetmasters, don't waste time explaining problems with their theories or showing that their policies don't work. They know that already, and don't care. It's for manipulating who they see as the underclasses to force of arms against the established order.

Thank you James. Too many people simply ridicule ‘wokeness’ without putting the effort in to appreciate what it took to seed and metastasize it throughout our culture. That is to underestimate the huge threat it now poses regarding civil unrest, authoritarian compliance and the fracturing of familial bonds. So much damage has already been done. So much cultural territory already ceded. The demoralization and destabilization is prolific.

This new totalitarian thought often reminds me of the specific detail in 1984 where Orwell says that 'Ingsoc' was successful where all other totalitarian thought failed precisely because it didn't discriminate racially or by class status. Ingsoc (and by direct comparison, wokeness) is as Lindsay says "uniformity with different coloured faces". What's coming scares the absolute hell out of me... This movement has grown and grown in utter defiance of the bedrock fundamentals that the western nations stand on. It is only a matter of time, the cultural revolution WILL touch you and your family at some point in the future and you have a moral obligation to stand against it even if it means your demise; for if this parasite takes root it will begin to scrub clean the blemishes from the pure whole. These ideas are MURDEROUS, these ideas are GENOCIDAL, these ideas MUST BE OPPOSED AT ALL COSTS. When the barbarians land on your shore, what will you do next?

Modern liberal values are about highlighting systemic power. Systemic power they claim is unjust, but want for themselves.
It's about highlighting race and racism. Making everything about race in an effort to prove how people besides themselves are racist.
It's about taking care of the group before the individual. And those who don't agree without question are not part of the group.
I grew up in a very liberal area. I listened to them for years, trying to fully understand the ideology. I asked questions where there were gaps in my knowledge, but they took the questions as treason. THEY pushed ME away. They wanted me to agree that minorities could not stand up for themselves. That they needed assistance because they were lesser than the white man (???!!?). They wanted me to be opinionated on anything and everything even if I knew nothing about them from TH-camrs, movie actors and other public figures and if you didn't have an opinion it was because your opinion is secretly the 'wrong' one (?????). I could keep going. Modern libs project so much hatred it's hard to take them seriously. I find it hard to believe they ever reflect on anything they're saying. Minorities need assistance because they can't fend for themselves? LOL that one still makes me laugh every day.

I agree with everything James just said, from the left. I’ll also add when I listen to the president who is also speaking “his truth” of “alternative facts” I’m concerned he’s also playing with postmodernism. I hope we can all get back to working from a base set of facts and then arguing over how to reach a goal, hopefully with a bit of give and take.
