Really good memories coming back, this was THE best strategy game for it's time, I have enjoyed playing it very, VERY much. I even palyed it less than a year ago with some friends, LAN, very cool.

Many weeks of effort were wasted... like when the music "haggstrom" is played in Minecraft and a horde of furious endermas kills you, sometimes the music doesn't hit the mark at the moment because it's random lol
How the music is played depends on your sound card and/or your CD. When I was a kid I was enchanted by how, even with the same CD, the music was "sampled" differently when the game was installed on different computers, back when sound card quality varied wildly and the industry standard was lower than it is today. The version of the soundtrack played here is the highest quality MIDI version. Also, game would use the lower quality MIDI if you did not put your CD in the computer to play.

The age of empire saga has some imperfections, but her ost has always been perfect
nothing is perfect but aoe is one of the best if not the best strategy game ever made (talking generally, aoe2 is better than aoe).
I actually do prefer AOE1 to the 2nd game. I like the setting and the music more....
But as you say, generally...AOE2 is better with many improvements
