In all honesty, most of the fans within the "Big 4's" fanbases are pretty well-grounded. Usually, most of the fanboy whining involves the ones who beat the dead horse known as any discussion involving Hetfield, Mustaine, and Ulrich and act like their opinions hadn't already been running on fumes since before the internet was really a thing. The subjects of the argument are millionaires who have accomplished much in their lives. While all these countless screechers do is yell random crap that will be lost in the void and accomplish nothing like those that came before them. No triggers. Two bass drums with single pedals. He truly hits the drums HARD, nails every note in every song through a two hour gig. You can’t get more old school and raw than this. Many modern drummers might have technically surpassed him, but to me Dave is just still in a class of his own.
I totally agree! I made a post on r/drums a little bit ago about it. Most of the newer drummers (I say this as a 26 yo lol) if you put them on an entirely acoustic kit even with the ideal sticks/heads/beaters would struggle to have hits this articulate and booming! Not to mention his age, trying to play drums for a living fucked my back up at 22. And I was only playing this kind of music in my free time, he truly is a God

I know it's been pointed out but holy shit, that gentle precise hit to the china cymbal cracks me up. This laid-back beast of a drummer can figure out how to inject humor & personality into a thrash song about the horrors of war... that's talent.
He makes it look EFFORTLESS. The man is a born drummer...look at how he's goofing around at the beginning, and just dives in headfirst with dead-on precision. I know they play this song every night so it's like second nature, but the way he MOVES while he drums is jaw-dropping to watch. There's no wasted or extraneous motion, no jerky or awkward motions, everything is fluid. Dave is simply a monster on the kit. And that little "ding" on the ride bell KILLS me every time. I miss those special little moments with Paul in the band.

His drum writing is incredible. So many parts, so many tempo shifts. The way he builds one part into another. I also like the humour in the bell ding too!

I like how musical he makes his parts, even more so than the original or how he played them before. You can "sing" his drumming. This last fallout with the band really sucked.
By Dave's own numbers, it's a reasonable deduction that he made about $750-800 for this show. Mindboggling that they could be this shortsighted. Good on Dave for putting Slayer in his rear view mirror.

Dave is THE metal drummer. Maybe not among the most technical drummers in the world but I have always liked his tasteful and sort of "down-to-earth"-style of playing.
I used to mosh so hard to this song in my basement as a kid. Twenty years later his son was a fan of my band and they came back stage to meet us. He was super humble. Very cool experience.

Marco is one of the most technically proficient drummers on the planet. Ever heard of necrophagist? Yeah Marco is the guy they hire to play live so he kills tech death.
Years ago I watched an interview with one of Miles Davis's sons (not sure which one - can't find the footage). He talked about sitting with Miles watching MTV. They were watching some more mainstream music, then a live Slayer show came on. His son thought "Oh no this isn't going to go well". Miles watched a couple of minutes of the show, then quietly stood up to leave the room. As he started to leave, he stopped, looked at the TV, and said something like "That drummer's really got it go'in on". Definitely some seriously high praise. Especially to me because I love both these artists. I hope Dave feels the same.
To have a positive, passing comment from Miles Davis about your musical endeavours would be just staggering. If that happened to you, every Grammy, every album of the year, every accolade going could just go and be tossed into oblivion.

And what about that killer-fill at 3:08? Which he modifies somewhat at 3:18... Man, it took me weeks and weeks of careful scrutinising to get to play that at half the speed he plays it. The god of fills, truly. Simple notes, but played with a combination of clinical precision and "effortless" speed...
Here’s a bit of inspiration for ALL of us. If we put in the energy this dude does into anything we want to achieve in life it would be as good as done... Think about that for a second. Want to learn the drums, watch this guy, want to become a professional snowboarder, watch this guy... want to become a beast in your industry, watch this guy, want to accomplish damn near anything in life, watch this guy. There is much more going on here then just drumming people... want shit to happen in your life, watch this guy before you walk out the door each morning.. and it’ll happen. Period.
Dave Lombardo is a big part of why I loved and continue to love playing drums. Slayer only exists with you behind the kit as far as I'm concerned. You acknowledged me once between songs at a show in Ft Lauderdale years ago, responding to my yells of "LOMBARDO!!!" 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
The great thing about Dave is that he is a technical, nuanced drummer, who plays heavy music. There's a lot of small details in his playing that a lot of people miss.
If I played in a band with a drummer like Dave, the audience would just see my back the whole time, "Sorry, guys, but this dude is so good, I gotta watch."
I was lucky enough to be standing no more than 6 feet away from him as he was playing with another band of his. To me, Dave is the exact definition of a great drummer. He picks up the band - and the crowd, like nobody's business. What a guy !
Yeah, My heart sank when I watched him tell that story in another clip. I was like... wow. Even being Dave Lombardo, in a world class outfit like Slayer, was giving no real compensation for what will be seen as a historical contribution to the art of metal music. Even this man is a blue collar worker after all that success.
As a guitarist and bassist, im just so impressed with the precision and stamina Dave has in all of his performances, Slayer or not. Such a gifted drummer.
I saw Slayer at the Cow Palace, San Francisco, in the late-1980’s. A break-dance crew was out on the floor, near the pit, demonstrating with their dancing how well they knew that Lombardo is a God of Thunder. It was amazing!
Dirk Verbeuren’s got a great groove too. But Lombardo is the master. I’m convinced the influence of Cuban percussion in his childhood plays a big role in his approach to drumming in general.
This video never gets old, should be put in a time capsule, 100 years from now, people need to see what the greatest Metal Drummer looks and plays like.
So many unbelievable fills. I’m wondering what the likes off Krupa , Rich, Blakey and Roach would have made of Dave’s drumming. So technically brilliant but with swing and groove. Immense!

When I found out Dave was lied to and not paid double what any of the other guys and had left the band, so did I. He is the heart of that band and without him they would be nothing.
If Slayer would have had a Lombardo cam for one of their live DVD's as extra content, I would pay whatever they asked right now. This video is way better than any of the concert DVD's where Dave hardly ever gets shown. The sound is incredible, especially on the Postmortem/Hate Worldwide vid. Too bad that can't happen now. I'd love it if you had any more of these. That would be amazing if you had the whole concert. Strange that Slayer never thought to do this. No brainer!

Years ago I watched an interview with one of Miles Davis's sons (not sure which one - can't find the footage). He talked about sitting with Miles watching MTV. They were watching some more mainstream music, then a live Slayer show came on. His son thought "Oh no this isn't going to go well". Miles watched a couple of minutes of the show, then quietly stood up to leave the room. As he started to leave, he stopped, looked at the TV, and said something like "That drummer's really got it go'in on". Definitely some seriously high praise. Especially to me because I love both these artists. I hope Dave feels the same.

Dave Lombardo is a big part of why I loved and continue to love playing drums. Slayer only exists with you behind the kit as far as I'm concerned. You acknowledged me once between songs at a show in Ft Lauderdale years ago, responding to my yells of "LOMBARDO!!!" 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I love a subtle, nuanced performance by a technical drummer as much as anyone, but Dave's playing is like a human earthquake. Incredible!
The great thing about Dave is that he is a technical, nuanced drummer, who plays heavy music. There's a lot of small details in his playing that a lot of people miss.

I was lucky enough to be standing no more than 6 feet away from him as he was playing with another band of his. To me, Dave is the exact definition of a great drummer. He picks up the band - and the crowd, like nobody's business. What a guy !
He did make that look easy almost like a cardio exercise but I can assure you its not. Go try it.

Yeah, My heart sank when I watched him tell that story in another clip. I was like... wow. Even being Dave Lombardo, in a world class outfit like Slayer, was giving no real compensation for what will be seen as a historical contribution to the art of metal music. Even this man is a blue collar worker after all that success.

I saw Slayer at the Cow Palace, San Francisco, in the late-1980’s. A break-dance crew was out on the floor, near the pit, demonstrating with their dancing how well they knew that Lombardo is a God of Thunder. It was amazing!

But Lombardo is the master. I’m convinced the influence of Cuban percussion in his childhood plays a big role in his approach to drumming in general.

When I found out Dave was lied to and not paid double what any of the other guys and had left the band, so did I. He is the heart of that band and without him they would be nothing.

Fast, technical and effortless. It's extremely hard to play that fast and make it groove at the same time.
If Slayer would have had a Lombardo cam for one of their live DVD's as extra content, I would pay whatever they asked right now. This video is way better than any of the concert DVD's where Dave hardly ever gets shown. The sound is incredible, especially on the Postmortem/Hate Worldwide vid. Too bad that can't happen now. I'd love it if you had any more of these. That would be amazing if you had the whole concert. Strange that Slayer never thought to do this. No brainer!
He and Mike Patton alone made The Directors Cut such a brillant record.
Watching him play is so unreal. It makes it all look too easy and he’s so fluid and on point. The way he just crushes that ride cymbal too. He is a force to be reckoned with.
