@@necrobynerton7384 IMO Ableton is actually much more intuitive and simple than FL. I tried to learn FL a long time ago and gave up after a few hours. I was confused by the matryoshka menus inside of menus, dragging around a bunch of separate windows, all the submenus and tabs, the way clips work, and so on. On the other hand, Ableton was immediately intuitive for me. The arrangement view works exactly how I expected it to. Using clips is easy. The piano roll is a lot easier to use and it's a lot faster as well. I went from knowing nothing about Ableton to making simple beats in probably 30 minutes. Funny thing is, I used to watch a lot of BusyWorksBeats tutorials years ago. They're pretty garbage, but tutorials are generalizable across DAWs. By watching him use FL, I started to realize its weaknesses. Mostly, the workflow is atrocious due to the complicated UI. To reverse an audio clip, you have to click through something like 2 or 3 menus. In Ableton you just right click the audio and reverse it like in any other program. Resampling is very hard in FL compared to Ableton. You need to use its built-in audio editor, Edison, which works like a VST and has its own separate menu. Then, you have to copy the audio out of it and paste and align it with the measure. In Ableton you just click the output dropdown and select "Resample" and it does it right in the clip arrangement without any alignment necessary. To make clip variations in FL Studio you have to go into some menus and click buttons or clone patterns. Working with clips in FL is a massive pain. In Ableton you just press CTRL+D or right click and duplicate then start messing with the new clip you've made. It works just like any other editing software. Automation is notoriously difficult in FL since you need to do it in a separate channel for each thing automated. EDM tracks end up with like 300 different channels, which looks insane on TH-cam and shocks outsiders, but you wouldn't want to have to produce like that. Plus, the drawing tools are not great. In Ableton you literally just draw all your automation on the same channel as whatever you're automating and switch using a dropdown box. It saves so much time it's crazy. Speaking of channels, Ableton doesn't really have the same limitations as FL, making gain staging immensely easier. Watching people try to gain stage or make busses in FL is like watching someone try to comb their hair with a fork. In Ableton you literally just hit CTRL + G to group some channels and then put a group inside another group and you've got a bus. In Ableton 10+ you can just stack these forever. Channel routing is easy too you just change the inputs and outputs using a drop down menu. Pretty much everything is visible to you when you start Ableton and nothing is hidden inside of submenus. Mixing and mastering in FL is truly painful which is why many FL producers use external software to mix or master their tracks, not FL. On the other hand, I've seen a lot of Ableton users just mix and master inside of Ableton. FL's UI and workflow sucks. Other designers think so as well, which is why virtually every other alternative DAW looks like Ableton. Cubase, Studio One, Reaper, even Logic are more similar to Ableton than to FL. Fact of the matter is that Ableton was designed from the ground up for fast and easy usage, since it was supposed to be a tool for live performance and DJing. It is, well, consequently fast and easy to use. Many FL users who try Ableton switch over once they get enough money. FL's only advantage is that it delivers a full feature set for a relatively small price tag and has good native plugins. Ableton, on the other hand, is very limited unless you buy the ultimate edition and have a bunch of third party plugins. It's sort of the professional's DAW while FL is a casual or hobbyist's DAW. They share some similarities though. Ableton and FL have the same clip-based looping abilities. I think people get confused in Ableton because it defaults to this clip/loop view instead of the session view. The clip view is designed for DJing or brainstorming, not really for arranging tracks or programming midi. In reality this is basically just the same thing as the pattern window in FL studio.
@@Thes4LT That is... Quite the description for Ableton, and seems that the downsides you mentioned for FL studio are, in fact, true. I will take this newfound info and try Ableton again, I will see if I change my mind. I guess, since I don't have any other experience I think FL studio is good at what it does, but most definitively it has A LOT of menus to go through - though sometimes I prefer having things separately, not just using this program but in general. Again, maybe due to my inexperience, so far having everything on a separate channel (especially automation) I can easily find what I am doing, but mostly because nothing ever exceeded over like 40-50 channels for me, so not much of a hassle to go through, but since you mentioned over 300 channels I can see how painful that could be. Stock plugins I most definitively find good in FL studio - I use Surge as my main VST now (third party) but back like 2 years ago I used Harmor and Harmless, pretty powerful but still feel like you just cant find what you need in the UI. As for effects, I haven't used much outside of LovePhilter, the Parametric EQ2, and some other stock effects Another thing is, I actually don't use samples much, except for obviously the drums, but thats it. I try to make my own sounds always. Takes time and effort but again, I am not in any rush for an audience, since the audience is myself. I see most producers use samples, and as far as I have seen doing stuff to samples with ableton seems to be easier than fl studio, even on my experience you did have to go through so many hoops to have a sample proper in your track. Oh and yea duplicating clips is like nonexistent in FL studio, and I always created a new pattern an copied whatever pattern I was trying to duplicate. Another way is to put the same clip twice and use the "Make unique" option to basically do that, but it doesn't have a shortcut (at least I am not aware of) so it does make it a pain. Piano roll has duplicate, if you want to duplicate say a 2 bar melody over to 4, you just press CTRL + B and does that, but thats about it Overall thanks for the insight, I certainly did not expect that big of a comment, but regardless, I will look into ableton again
fl is a lot more user friendly than ableton biased people are giving it credit for...But I can agree about all the menus that you have to which between. But I use dual screens so no issues for me...I've used many different daws over the years, but for some reason ableton is by far the hardest to get a grasp of. Nothing seems to work the way that you think it should (at least for me). And there seems to always be a bunch of useless info onscreen in which you can't seem to get rid of. With fl's ui, you can close windows you aren't using and you can resize nearly everything.
@@ericwarr9088 So, well, after a few weeks of trying I still can't use ableton. Maybe because having 5 years of FL usage I have become way too accustomed to the UI and changing that workflow I get completely lost since I expect things differently. Like in my first comment I seriously can't grasp the UI and feels very unintuitive. Also considering I am not a keyboard shortcut user, at least not a heavy user, I find Ableton hard to use. Still not saying which is better since it is personal preference (and maybe one has advantages over the other, that much is not being questioned) but for me FL still is more friendly UI wise.
best about fl studio when you turn it on that tone at the beginning. @@rorz999 Lol the people making FL have been for 20+ years. Fl is faster since it is literally written in C and assembly code. @@Lucky5111 few corrections: 1. Ableton is written in C++, not FL Studio. 2. You can create your own workflow in any software DAW, that's what replaced hardware DAWs with the advent of software inventions. nothing is destructible, everything can be recovered. 3. Any DAW can automate anything. 4. UI is subjective but imo FL Studio looks like a game and Ableton looks more utilitarian. neither is ugly, one is suited for kids and the other is suited for adults. that's like saying you hate the classic doom because "it's ugly", and that's why you prefer the new ones. it's a useless claim because you're not the target audience for it. there are advantages and disadvantages to using both software so it's childish to compare these two.
@@jackieburkhart3268 1. Never said ableton was written in C, but I did get FL wrong, Fl is written in Delphi and assembly. Still FL has better performance, maybe not by a lot. 2. Agree 3.I am not sure about other DAWs, but I know it is not possible to do the same type of automation used in FL in ableton. Such as having a peak controller automating an external plugin. 4. With the UI, I am implying that in FL's new update you are now able to customize the color scheme to your liking.

I really wish ableton would take a page out of FL's book with the step sequencer. That shit is fire. I don't particularly like FL for automation and whatnot, but that sequencer...
@@TheHonestTruth FL is one of the best for automation. Literally everything can automate everything, if you have a kick on one channel with a peak controller, you can basically set up a proq3 on the bass then invert the peak signal to the 80hz-200hz~ range, and you basically have space for your kick to pop out.
This video was great! I was planning on switching from ableton to fl as my first payed for daw because it seemed cheaper but I was so used to ableton and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to learn fl but seeing this definitely helped me out and made me excited to try it out in the future thanks man!
I mean it is a similar work flow overall on both, ableton has better and faster automations and everything can be on one screen and it's quicker to navigate, and samples can instantly be fixed/stretched in places but FL has a better sequencer and piano roll so it's a trade off. For drum programming or piano roll, FL is better, for automation, sample manipulation and live recording of instruments like guitar ableton is better
I had been an FL user since around FL 5.0 and switched to Ableton for several years. I still miss the FL Piano roll. Ive tried both.. FL Studio.. Once youve got it down, is SOOO powerful. It just makes things go so much faster. Like Ivve be making a beat and my gf will say "Wtf are you typing lyrics? I dont see a wordpad or anything" and Im like no, Im using hot keys and shortcuts. So once you have all this down, and yes other DAW have shortcuts but Fl just is supreme. Everything has its own little window that you can go from each to each so youre not on the same screen, you can focus on exactly what youre working on, and even the aesthetics make the production sound better. Then you have, on the left, a kind of "trick" which is in Mixer Presets where you can chose a mastering preset.. And there are many to chose from, but it kind of bumps up your mixing and mastering baseline much higher. Just that alone almost makes it sound mastered already. I swear by Fl... Ill never use a different DAW ever. FL is KING.

As for effects, I haven't used much outside of LovePhilter, the Parametric EQ2, and some other stock effects
Another thing is, I actually don't use samples much, except for obviously the drums, but thats it.
Piano roll has duplicate, if you want to duplicate say a 2 bar melody over to 4, you just press CTRL + B and does that, but thats about it
Overall thanks for the insight, I certainly did not expect that big of a comment, but regardless, I will look into ableton again
fl is a lot more user friendly than ableton biased people are giving it credit for...But I can agree about all the menus that you have to which between.
@@ericwarr9088 So, well, after a few weeks of trying
I still can't use ableton.
Ed Talenti's energy is insane man... He got me hyped up like it's also my first time on FL😂😂😂🤣 This man can lead a whole movement...

best about fl studio when you turn it on that tone at the beginning. I get chills every time. he has been there since the first days. fl studio is so beautiful and so smooth to work with. that it is amazing. I tried Ableton. I couldn't handle it. as if I were colorblind. respect to those who use it.
FL Studio has its good qualities, but beautiful and smooth aren't words I'd use to describe it... it's ugly and clunky lol
@@rorz999 Lol the people making FL have been for 20+ years. Fl is faster since it is literally written in C and assembly code. Since nothing is hard wired to anywhere, you can create your own workflow, anything can automate everything, and now with the new update the UI looks better.
FL has been faster than ableton/
@@Lucky5111 few corrections:
@@jackieburkhart3268
1. Never said ableton was written in C, but I did get FL wrong, Fl is written in Delphi and assembly. Still FL has better performance, maybe not by a lot.
2. Agree
3.I am not sure about other DAWs, but I know it is not possible to do the same type of automation used in FL in ableton. Such as having a peak controller automating an external plugin.
4. With the UI, I am implying that in FL's new update you are now able to customize the color scheme to your liking.
@@Lucky5111 that's a new feature in FL? being able to customize colors? geez, y'all are lacking 💀💀💀

BTW can you make a skillshare course? I'd really like to learn from you!

this is awesome, the energy is amazing.
Just the fact that it's inspiring is worth spending time with it. I love FL for that reason, the look and the workflow just helps me stay creative. It has its quirks of course, I question my life decisions about not using Ableton sometimes lol. But that's just part of making music

The hi hat loop you played was pretty sick, here @2:14 , you need no play it again to record. You can just go to tools and "Dump the score log" > last 2/5/10 min.
This will dump the last played score Log ( not sure whether it is log or anything else) on your highlighted track ( green colored )

If you wanna blow your mind try the patcher! With patcher you can litteraly create new plugin by yourself. I don't wont spoiler so much about it, just try it (even the preset).
I normally can not stand to over enthusiastic and happy people which looks pretentious but yours is so genuine and your presentations are so inspiring and helpful. Keep being happy! Thank you!
I love how much you enjoyed FL, all I got from you was a positive vibe
I really wish ableton would take a page out of FL's book with the step sequencer. That shit is fire.
I don't particularly like FL for automation and whatnot, but that sequencer...
I made a song the other day and decide not to even automate any delays lmao
Fl is terrible in automation
@@TheHonestTruth lol no it's not bruh. I'm not saying its the best either. but to say its terrible is just wrong. but to each their own.

Learning a new daw isn't that hard.
You just have to get used to the shortcuts
One of my friends used to use Ableton then moved to FL recently, seems like Ablwton users like our workflow even though they don't like admitting it
I mean it is a similar work flow overall on both, ableton has better and faster automations and everything can be on one screen and it's quicker to navigate, and samples can instantly be fixed/stretched in places but FL has a better sequencer and piano roll so it's a trade off. For drum programming or piano roll, FL is better, for automation, sample manipulation and live recording of instruments like guitar ableton is better
I moved from FL to Ableton. Now that I'm in Ableton i just wonder how the fuck i even made music in FL. To each their own i guess

You probably are the only guy who became such a pro at using fl in such short time man... You won my heart 😂🖤🖤
Once you have learned other daws, you can basically replicate that work flow into fl.
I’m thinking about switching to FL from ableton too.
YES I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!
You should just do alternate videos of FL and Ableton.
I had been an FL user since around FL 5.0 and switched to Ableton for several years. I still miss the FL Piano roll. I still find FL Studio to be the fastest way to get something out of my head and into my ears.
Now running FL Studio INSIDE of Ableton using ReWire... That's where it's at.
Best of both worlds! 🎶☠🎶
How did you do that
I can't get enough of FL🔥🔥🔥
I was not ready for that 2nd one 🔥🔥🔥
I’ve been thinking of switching to Abelton from FL because I hear it’s not as complicated as FL.
FL is too damn complicated with all the menu diving and random UI shit that doesn’t make sense. I can work sort of quickly on it but Ableton is like the quickest (for me personally) to go from an idea in my head to real music
@@josephkiesel4695 from the videos I’ve watched on abelton that’s what it looks like. It’s straight to the point. Only thing holding me back is how much Abelton is and the fact I’d have to learn a whole new DAW. I still feel like I’m trying to find my groove as a producer but it’s only been a year and a half for me.
@@deepeyton if you get some certain hardware it comes bundled with Ableton Live Lite, which is a slightly limited version of Ableton but you can do basically everything you’d want to do on there. Ableton live intro is pretty good too and I think it’s just 99 dollars.

I like FL Studio more by the piano roll alone and the modulation possibilities. Envelope controller?, automation clips? harmor?...
Hey Ed thanks for the demo. I was wondering if you noticed anything different about FL Studio that made it better than Ableton? I've been playing with Ableton on my laptop for a few months but Ableton's interface is tiiiny in comparison to FL Studio. I feel like I need a magnifying glass to use Ableton! Anyway thanks for the content bro 🙏🏼
For that reason alone I prefer fl. It's very hard to see what you are doing on ableton. With fl you can move things around easily, close them out, or resize them to make sure that you are viewing everything you need to see.

The editing on this vid is really good
Ive tried both.. FL is KING.
